    Just found your channel after listening to your podcasts, which by the way are excellent. This video genuinely made me laugh. Whilst I understand this wasn't a laughing matter due to damaged caused, it was, in my opinion, some sort of real life flying. Not everyone is Tucker and get it right first time. It's refreshing to see. Like you I hold a private pilots licence and starting paramotor training this year, and I can guarantee my videos will be more like yours than Tucker or Anthony. (love both by the way)
    Keep up the excellent video content and podcasts.

    I'm really stoked to hear about your Spain adventures coming up. Hahaha did you really just discover that your motor has a pull start? 😂. Oh and the ambulance siren at the 8:00 minute mark seemed to be foreboding LOL. Very sorry about the prop damage, but don't give up. You will get there! Enjoying every minute of your paramotor journey:)

      Lycan ZHP I must have known about the pull start on some level, but it honestly never crossed my mind with the flat battery as we’ve been so accustomed electric start

    Shaun ,
    I'm with you mate , 260lbs and 6 foot tall , I did my training with Matt Fox as well . You did everything great , bit hesitant to go to full power though , once the wing is stable overhead start feeding on the power , lean back , remember to run it out till your 6-10 feet in the air , always keep your legs under you till well off the ground .
    Get back on the horse , you'll love it .

    I think I will just repeat what everyone else has been saying...get some ground speed, keep centre of the wing and keep running oh apply a slight amount of even brake until after you have lift off then slowly let off to build up airspeed..oh did I say keep running!!..until you're off the ground..one more tip, get someone on coms that will keep telling you what you should be doing in the fluster of take off, otherwise you will be spending a lot of money on more kit mate...saying all that we have all been there or going through that now!!! Keep going and happy flying..😉😁

    Hi Shaun, Where in FNQ are you? I want to learn locally and can't find anyone nearby- I'm in Townsville. Do you know anyone around??? Cheers Dane BTW was that Tully High School???

    • @FatParamotorGuy
      @FatParamotorGuy  6 років тому +1

      Yes it was 😄- the closest PPG instructor is in Brisbane (Tribal Flight) but you can get a paragliding licence (there's someone at Cairns, but maybe someone local to Townsville). After that you can do a shorter conversion course. There's a guy in Melbourne who offered me the conversion for free - my understanding is a safety officer can do this and you don't need a fully fledged instructor, but I'm never 100% sure. Good luck!

    hey Shaun, I was chatting with you a few weeks back while you were weeding. Great try mate, but you should consider a slower wing to start off with, I taught myself to fly overseas & used an ozone spark, a brilliant first wing. And Matt sells the dudek nemo XX which is even better, I think you were kiting with that? These slower wings have much slower/easier takeoff than the roadster.

      @FatParamotorGuy  6 років тому

      Simon Hunnisett I’m finishing training with Matt in a month, I’ll see what he recommends for me then, as I’m considering one of those trike/footlaunch combos.

      I would say the instinct is a kit car. Looks great, but easier to break and no increase in performance. The Rodeo looks much more sensible. 👍

    Careful turning the prop if you don't have a clutch your engine might start if all you have is a push button kill than if you need to turn it for some reason pull plug wire.

      Roger Galbraith Words of wisdom, In this case however, the motor has an actual off switch that I switch off before removing it from my back. It was all switched off, and the battery disconnected

    Did you ever get the foot launching down? How many attempts after this did it take you to get off the ground? Did you have any fails or costly mistakes after this?
    Glad to see you had such a good attitude about it. I just started my training and am very overweight myself. Hoping to catch onto this sport quickly tho. Fingers crossed!

    • @FatParamotorGuy

      I haven’t sorted the footlaunching. The challenge isn’t just skills, I cannot find a harness that I can get out of for the landing. The seat board gets trapped between my fat arse and the frame. I’m going to take a look at the Sol harness.

    Love the videos, what are the licencing laws in Australia, do u need one ?? I know u did a few days training but didn't fly. Just curious of how it all works as we have no trainers in SA so will need to go interstate.
    Keep at it, your nearly there but maybe a trainer talking in your ear might help, good luck.

      @FatParamotorGuy  6 років тому +1

      Mark Martin Aussie Poker Vloger You need a licence here in Australia and I wouldn’t really endorse flying here without one. I’m booked to finish training in July, but have been pushing the envelope a bit as I’m miles away from the nearest instructor too and have been wanting to improve my foot launch skills. Having an instructor makes a huge difference.

    Sooo sooo close, as already mentioned good control of the wing, just need to keep running even if you feel a bit of a twat running whilst in the air, also already mentioned, we’ve all done this before, especially when you’ve had several runs already and feeling knackered you just jump into the seat ! One of my first flights on my own did exactly this and not only broke the prop, but engine, petrol container, too many things to list.
    Next time next time 😁 all good fun

    Heart breaking every time it happens (and we all do it)
    That motor is a pretty exotic machine so will not take a beating as well as a more generic type.
    You technique is solid with the wing (the hard part is done).... I am assuming that you are not using your legs as wheels and allowing the motor to do all the hard work...?
    You did the old classic, picked up your feet :(
    You need to drill yourself to keep running until your feet miss the ground and be ready to run again as it may often lift you then put you back down for a moment as you inadvertently change break pressure.
    You are all but ready to take to the sky, but looking at that sky early on, it would have been a handful to fly in... strong thermal's with hard edges are quite taxing, even when you are experienced... the only escape is to land or fly above the clouds.
    Even later on, the sky looked like it would still be reasonably lumpy at times but I would assume, reasonably manageable if you understand your wing.
    If you are going to go for it.... do exactly what you did here but commit, go full power with some break pressure until it lifts you, once you are off the floor and stable, start to ease off the break pressure while you are sill in close proximity to the floor (5ft+ ish) this will place you away the stall window... keep full power and don't stop climbing until you are 500ft+.
    Start doing circuits (in the direction of the torque-steer) as if you are setting up to land so that if it is lumpy or your head burns out (and it might if you launch on a day like that!), you will be all set for a landing.
    And stay away from the very active portions of the day! (as we saw at the start of your practice), there will be lots of time to have a play with that shit once you are a little more squared away.
    This way, all the danger is reasonably confined to take-off's and landings... low level fuck-ups, broken props, bent frames, skinned knees but no deaths :)
    Oh, and watch out for the rotor coming off that hill :)
    Keep the faith man.... when it works and on the right day, there is nothing like it... it will boggle your mind :)

      I just got my 11th flight in, My instructor told me to keep off the brakes until airborne, but I kept having problems at the transition(feeling like I was going to trip), and it made for some rough takeoffs and aborts. When I watched more experienced pilots I figured out that everyone else was getting to speed, going full power, and lightly pulling on the brakes. I started doing that, and instantly I was nailing takeoffs. Just wait until your feet feel really light and 'wrong'. The small amount of brake pressure at the right time was enough to change everything about my takeoffs. But remember to ease off of it then you get a few feet off the ground and let your airspeed grow and climb you out.

  • @ctchuteflyer
    @ctchuteflyer 6 років тому +1

    Looks like you needed more commitment and more throttle. When you are going to launch, launch hard. You are a big dude and probably need a full handful of throttle. Only abort if the wing is unsafe. It looked like you had it under control, but needed a little brake pressure and more throttle. Also dont rush into your seat.

      You had it you just had to keep the power on lean back and you would have been away.
      But you must run and run and resist the urge to sit down or jump into the air.

    • @WatermelonIgloo
      @WatermelonIgloo 6 років тому +1

      as everyone is suggesting, you just tried to get into the seat too early. i too did that during my training, luckily i just skimmed the sand for a split second. all attempts looked good though, i would've taken any of them.
      also, i do some scuba diving. stick with the paramotor, unless you want to spend the same amount of money you did on paramotor equipment on diving gear.

  • @CharlesVanNoland

    Dang, that paramotor is junk, I don't care if it cost a billion dollars. Flimsy garbage that someone's laughing all the way to the bank for getting away with selling. You're lucky you didn't lose fingers, or the back of your head!
    I like the "Heh, little paragliders" at the end there. It was kinda crazy hearing them in the air before they came down, whooshing through the sky.

    Ugh, frustration. Gutted for you, but you'll get there.
    Your powered run without the wing looked good, leaning back nicely, but on your take off attempt you weren't. Thrust angle pointing down. Any stumble in this situation will punish you, retracting the undercarriage too soon will punish you, propelling you toward the floor. I'm also guilty of this.. even when I could swear blind I'm leaning back, video proves me a liar. Watch Tuckers latest vid, his take off is so perfect, propeller exactly perpendicular to the floor.
    I found take offs MUCH easier when I stopped thinking about it... pull up, hit the gas, lean back and run. Only bin it if something feels weird.
    I wouldn't blame the damage on the manufacturer, the spars and hoop are not structural. Its not designed to be slammed into the ground under power. If you had a butt landing, your engine would already be off and the prop stationary..
    Best of luck with the move! Spain is good news, the likelihood of dual-vlogging and beers together just went up sharply! 😀
    I'm already planning to drive down to see you for a few days...

    You were close to flying. You need to run faster to create more lift or fly in stronger wind. Stronger wind requires more skill. You also sat too soon, you need to let the glider lift you and your legs to be under you until you are way in the air. Your camera man was laughing at your misfortune. You need a real friend there to help you and support you.
