I don’t believe there is a single living soul who doesn’t fall in love with Coraline...this song pierces your heart...it is full of metaphors and hidden messages...Damiano is an expert at writing songs with a meaning.

Just a small note: in Italian "I told Coraline she can grow up" is not a bad thing. I've seen English speakers wonder why he's being rude to Coraline, telling her to grow up an leave, and that's not it!
In Italian it has the meaning of "I told Coraline she's allowed to grow up" (same verb as 'can') aka she's allowed to, and as a matter of fact SHOULD want something better for herself than her father's abuse, she doesn't have to be a scared little girl her whole life, she deserves better.

    • @TheMule71
      @TheMule71 3 роки тому +5

That's so true. A perfect example of how not only something gets lost in the translation, something also gets added. In Italian the meaning of the verse is close to "you can make it, you can break out of your prison", as in leaving an abusive family.
In all fairness, the abusive father is not established for sure. "a father that is nothing like a father" may be just someone who maybe criticized her instead of supporting her when she needed help, pushing her towards suicide.
This song as much about her lover as it is about Coraline. It's about the pain of watching someone you love suffer and being unable to help. The music is love, hope, anger, sadness. The structure is circular, so the music for love at the beginning is the same for sadness at the end.

I mean I always took it as She still has so much time left, and that she doesn’t have to live her whole life in the pain she is in. That things will change, that “she can grow up, take her things and leave”.
Its almost like a plea for her to keep going forwards. Had no idea people thought he meant that she should just grow up be more mature. That’s baffling to me

This lyrical ballad has some of the deepest and most tragic meanings of all Maneskin's repertoire. It is told in the form of a medieval fairy but tragic tale. The truths Coraline knows are so atrocious you can't even name them. Read the lyrics once without music. Put the meaning of each stanza in the story together and you will discover Coraline's 'heavy burden' and why she is so anxious and she doesn't want to 'eat' but rather she wants to 'disappear'.
Stanza 1: description of Coraline's appearance: she is a beautiful girl and sensitive, she feels the sorrow of other people and she carries it within herself.
Stanza 2: description of C's tragic psychological reality: her heart is broken into two halves, she has lost all her energy because of the evil she has to suffer and people who don't know about her inner self and the violence and 'burden' she has been exposed to say she is weak and can't do even the most common things (going out of a door). But one day she will succeed in going through that door and her life will start to change. A new beginning for her will then be possible.
Stanza 3: The singer tells C she can change her life 'take her things and leave', but C doesn't have the force to react, she 'wants the sea but she's afraid of the water', there is a monster she is afraid of... a father who is not a father... and now we know that the sea is really inside her and her womb... She loses the fruit of her womb. She doesn't know the meaning of love... And any word said to soothe her sorrow and help her is useless it is like an 'axe in her back'...
Stanza 4: what will the singer be for her if she wants to be helped. He will know her truth and fight for her without asking for anything in return.
Stanza 5: conclusion: we end in the same way as the story started (in a circular movement) = there is no solution to C's burden. There's a castle in town with walls so massive and solid that nothing more will afflict C. She will find eternal peace inside that castle.
Maneskin once said in an interview that this song is based on a true story. The name Coraline has been chosen for musical reasons.

The saddest part of this song is that Damiano has said it is based on a real story. But Damiano won't say more about it.
Thing with Måneskin is that when they sing in English it's mostly fun, sexual...
But when he writes in Italian it's poetry.
I'd suggest La Paura del buio. There is a radio1 live version of that song with English subtitles

Thank you for showing genuine emotion in a reaction.
Exactly, the most heartbreaking thing is the fact that there are way too many Coralines in the world.
The band said this is based on a real story, it's written as a fairytale, the 'knight' cannot help Coraline and the ending is not happy. Still, I'm wondering whether the whole song is based completely on a specific story, or whether Damiano combined many stories into the lyrics. I guess we'll never know for sure since he also said he wants people to interpret it as they wish.

I've felt your same heart wrenching for all the song and a filling of woe at last row. Yes, your reaction was accurate: CORALINE wanted to disappear and a day she'll been able to step out from a miserable sutuation (closer translation of stupid door should be miserable door) just finding peace in a walled castel. As you said a cemetery in an ideal way but also real considering that in Italy the cemetery are walled.
Another heart wrenching song by lyrics is VENT'ANNI (20 years old) . It's introspective song but it is for all of us. It need to read lyrics as in CORALINE.
TORNA A CASA, the Official video, is a piece of art itself. Lyrics can be read before or after and speaks about a Muse named Marlena (recurring in several songs of their first album "Il ballo della vita") inspiring art creativity and freedom.

Coraline is a fancy name for a real person. Damiano doesn't want to talk about it.
All we know is that she was a little girl he tried to help but the story doesn't have a happy ending.
It is assumed that the girl was abused and suffered violence, the depression that followed the trauma was so strong that it pushed her to suicide.
It is said that the walls of the castle are the surrounding walls of the Verano cemetery near Rome. A very sad story. A song that leaves its mark.
He takes you by the hand and accompanies you serenely at the beginning,
then note by note the sky becomes darker and darker and around the landscape becomes more and more harsh,
gloomy and you find yourself in a world of despair, the loneliness and helplessness of Coraline,
until everything comes to an end and you find yourself at the starting point, same music, same notes, but they no longer sound like they did in the beginning,
something is missing, hope is lacking because that girl as beautiful as the sun is gone, her silver knight could not save her.
His life and his story end without a happy ending.

Very good reaction, and a quick pick up on the themes. It is an incredibly emotional song, beautiful, yet tragic. It really speaks to the breadth of their genius.
As far a I understand, Damiano has stated the story is true and tragic, but otherwise not a lot of details. I believe as a poet he left it vague to allow us to apply the themes to our own experiences, which can be so much more powerful than just hearing a story with all the details. So for me with 2 daughters and a profession in mental health, it is an incredibly emotional song.
Like you said this band is surprising in it’s breath of talent and creativity. In my opinion headed for legitimate stardom and perhaps the company of some truly iconic bands.
As to what else to react to, when I first discovered them, everything was very good to great, with multiple genres. Their Italian “ballads” are amazing. Their hard Rock is fantastic. For Your Love deserves to be a classic Rock anthem. Hell they even do a good reggae number “Are You Ready”

I relate with your point of view. I'm a mother and my son is 12. First time I've heard this song, my head runs immediately to my son and problems people of his age, have to face. Bullysm, firsts problems that became huge because simply they are facing them for the first time, first sexual approaches and maybe violations because with their innocence they trust everyone even monsters dressed like angels. As a mother I entirely understand words when Damiano says: I'll be everything for you, and I'll not ask you anything in return, just your happiness, your smile, because your grief is mine but bigger (every little tears is an ocean on my face). And I've cried, I've cried too much because in my heart I know that I cannot be there for him every time.
I'm sorry for my broken English I hope I've been able to make you understand my point of view as a parent.

So happy you started here with the lyric videos! This one gets me every time! Damiano has a way with words, that's for sure. Story goes that Damiano knew someone who he wrote this song about. Her name wasn't Coraline, he just changed the name so it was melodically pleasing. I saw an interview where he was asked about the seemingly fairytale story and he basically wanted people to take from it what they wanted. Whether the end was suicide, being taken care of, in a mental hospital, he just wanted people to come to their own conclusions for themselves. Love the change of the feeling of the song midway through. This song is a beautiful piece of work even if it has a painful sentiment. Thank you for your reaction! I would suggest La paura del buio / Fear of the Dark (Radio Italia Live). Here is the link. It has English subtitles if you put on the closed captioning. ua-cam.com/video/eG-bBYiVWWM/v-deo.html

Cemeteries in Italy tend to be walled enclosures, and this is certainly true for the Verano cemetery, in Rome, where the band is from... Damiano has said before that the name is fantasy, but the story is at least based on true events... my take, shared by many, is that the father abused this girl and that indeed she took her own life... the other thing that is more my personal observation is that the constant callbacks to water make me think the girl might have thrown herself in the Tiber river, which divides Rome in two parts, like the heart of the girl herself.

Glad you picked this one. "Coraline" is from their latest album. Beautifully written, sad and powerful. We only know this is a true story about a girl close to Damiano (singer/lyricist). Coraline isn't her real name. About the "strong walls" intended as a cemetery a lot of fans think it is but I think we'll never know for sure since they won't talk about the actual story behind the song. From this album I suggest you two others but the live versions: "La Paura del Buio" (ua-cam.com/video/eG-bBYiVWWM/v-deo.html) and "Vent'anni" (ua-cam.com/video/CV26s1O3Z30/v-deo.html) Grazie.

Coraline is the story of a child abused by her father. Her schizoid heart prevents her from loving what she loved about her because of her nature. Like her father who turns into a monster, so the sea and the river are reflected in her fears. The meaning of the good is reversed. The father is evil, so is the food, going out the door of that prison, seeing the future - for Coraline all this is steeped in great pain. A man who would like to help her in a safe place, a shelter for children taken from the family. He would like to give her shelter, affection, without asking for anything in return. But Coraline is broken, forever. It's a song about domestic violence. Hidden truth.

It is very difficult to say something after listening to this song, especially when you know it tells a true story! It is impossible not to be moved! It is impossible not to love Coraline and not to hate her father!! I recommend Torna a casa and Vent'anni , but with the English translation of the lirycs because these are real poems too!! There is an opinion that the song is dedicated to Giorgia Soleri, Damiano's girlfriend. She has a "Coraline" tattoo on her shoulder and has had problems with her father in the past

    • @valentines3870
      @valentines3870 3 роки тому

It's probably the other way around. She got the tatoo because she relates to the song and as an hommage to Damiano.

  • @HamelinSong

The interpretation that is most widely accepted is this being a story about a girl who is abused and raped by her own father, who develops anxiety, depression, anorexia, agoraphobia and on top of that she also miscarries/have an abortion. The person telling the story tries to support her in any way they can just to see her smile once, but in the end, she can't escape this abusive relationship. It's still unclear if the castle refers to her own grave, an asylum, a women's shelter or just the prison of her own mind, but most probably refers to Cimitero del Verano a famous monumental cemetery in Rome.
