  • Today we're fighting for the Iron Throne in A Game of Thrones The Board Game!
    In this series you'll be joining our group of friends for a post-game discussion of our favorite games. We'll be highlighting exciting moments from the game and cutting to replays during our discussion.
    As a note, we're playing the Feast For Crows mini-expansion in this session. This mini-expansion makes the following changes to the rules from the base game.
    4 Player Only
    Supply is updated at the end of the every round
    Victory Points are earned by completing objectives
    You need 7 VP to win
    you have 1 Special Objective (house specific) and 3 secret objectives (randomly drawn from the objective pile). You are dealt 5 randomly and choose 3 of the 5 objective cards to keep
    You never have less than 3 secret objectives (if you go to 2 cards, draw another)
    Each round, you can complete your public objective for 1 point
    Additionally, you may complete one secret objective each round
    VP are scored in a new phase immediately following the CP Phase
    Everyone scores VP at the same time, and in the event of ties, tie-breaks are according to the Rulebook tiebreakers (most territory owners, then if still tied, Iron Throne Influence Track Position).
    The "Arryn" power token on the Eyrie does not get removed from the board -- it functions as a printed token like the Stark token in Winterfell, as the Eyrie is considered Arryn's home area.

    I was playing 6 player recently as the Tyrells. The Martells drew out the borders they wanted with myself and the Baratheons in round one then just chilled out and farmed money the whole game to fund against wildling raids. Didn't end up in a single combat. What a legend.

      +Lora Logue Wow, that's pretty crazy! I don't think I could ever pull that off! I think that speaks to what makes this game so great. There's just so many different ways to play and you'll never have the same experience twice. Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks a lot Brad, that's exactly what we were hoping to do with the series so that's nice to hear. We've done a few full game play episodes, but have been considering putting out bonus episodes featuring the full games as well. It's a little tough right now because it does still require a fair amount of editing for the several hours of game footage (language, breaks, rules, downtime, etc), but it may very well happen in the future!

    Great game. It is one of my favorites. The only time I have played the "feast for crows" expansion/variant, the Lannister player rolled over everyone else. I have to agree with how you guys played it, you need to beat up the Lannisters or they will get ahead quickly. Thanks for doing it! Entertaining to watch.

    @ricardomazzo2918 9 років тому +6

    First of all, congrats on the show! Very interesting. I've recently started playing this game and it's pretty amazing. One thing that's is missing in your video is a discussion on each house strategy. For instance, what's the best way to start the game for Starks ou Baratheons, does every house have the same chance of victory or which house has the most impact on who will win etc. And what do you think about the players playing with the same house every single time? In your opinion, would it add value for the game? Best wishes from Brazil!

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  9 років тому +7

      Thanks Ricardo! First, I'll say it's a little tricky (I think) to talk optimal strategies for each house. The main reason for that is just the huge amount of player interaction in the game. You could have an ideal Stark / Baratheon strategy, but if the other players know what you're going for, they'll crush you before you can pull it off... I think that's what makes the game so interesting in the end. Sure, there are probably some good basic strategies to follow with each house...for example Stark is all alone and has few resources way up north, so it's a good idea to try and move south fairly quickly. Aside from things like that, it's really all about making / breaking alliances and working the other players at the table. With that being said I don't necessarily think one house has an easier / harder time winning once everyone at the table is familiar with the game.
      I will say though that I do think playing the same house for multiple games will certainly help you. You'll become a lot more comfortable with your surroundings as well as learning your hand of character cards to play. Also multiple games playing with this mini-expansion as the same house will help you learn the various objective cards so you know what to look for.
      I know that wasn't directly answering your question, but I certainly hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching :)

    Hey guys! Love the videos! But just one request, I think it's great that y'all do this and cut to the best scenes from your sessions. @boardgamereplay  9 років тому +1

      Zach Berly Thanks for the kind words Zach! This is something we've definitely considered, and try to do as often as we can. There usually just ends up being a fair amount of downtime or breaks that ends up requiring quite a bit of additional editing on top of the regular video. It's nothing we can't handle, our time right now is just so limited we try to just keep it to new content as much as possible. Stay tuned though, we're going to try and do this as soon as we can.

    Great video as always. This is without a doubt my favourite game. I have never looked into getting the expansion, but after seeing you guys playing it I'll be getting it first chance I get. Love the secret objectives, the thought of possibley having different objectives each time is brilliant. Players will have to constantly be having to think of new strategies, brilliant!
    Is the expansion for four players or can it be played with up to six?
    Finally, could you please upload the video of the full game, I would love to watch it!

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  10 років тому

      Thanks for the nice words! To answer your first question, A Feast For Crows expansion is interesting as it's for exactly 4 players. No more no less. I kind of like that though because it gets a chance to play this excellent game with a smaller group and still have a pretty balanced experience.
      As far as the full video goes, I'm not quite ready to include the full videos of all the games yet, but I'm working on a way to do something like this in the future! Thanks again for watching!

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  10 років тому

      Thanks Eric, really glad you enjoyed it. This mini expansion is the perfect solution for when you can't get all 6 players to the table. We've never played with the Tides of Battle cards but I could certainly be persuaded to try them in the future. Everyone in the group so far just loves that there's no luck in the combat. If you play your highest value cards early, you'll have a much harder time winning combat again soon :)

    Board Game Replay Good video, but Baratheon didn't win. What happened is that you confused strongholds with castles. You can see which is which on page nine of the rulebook. When he "won" Baratheon had two strongholds (Dragonstone and King's Landing) and four castles (Harrenhal, Cracklaw Point, The Reach, and Storm's End). At that same time Lannister had two (Lannisport and Riverrun) and Stark had two (Winterfell and Seagard) meaning that Baratheon couldn't score the objective.

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  10 років тому +3

      Oh wow, you may very well be right! We had multiple times during the game where we made the distinction between the two (for musters and such). It may have partly based on the Stark house objective card stating "Castles OR Strongholds" that had us not noticing that last one. Ultimately I blame the fact that our brains were all fried from fighting each other for the last few hours so we just didn't notice it! Thanks for pointing that out! :)

    i just got the game a few days ago and i'm really excited to play!i don't have a feast for crows expansion though which seems much more entretaining than the simple game.i've noticed that you played with the house tyrell in the game even though the instructions for four plays specify that greyjoy is the fourth house.did you do that because of the AFFC expansion or just because you didn't want to play with the greyjoys(and if so..how does influence the dinamics of the game)?

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  10 років тому +1

      Actually the AFFC expansion changes the normal game set up rules. It specifically calls for exactly those 4 houses to be played. AFFC introduces House Arryn to the game with it's own deck of house cards and objectives, but you still have to use the units and tokens from House Tyrell (that's why it looked like we played with them). I hope that helps!
      The main reason we played with the AFFC expansion is because it keeps the main spirit of the game intact, but plays in a much shorter time frame. AFFC is balanced to support exactly 4 players and the objective cards help keep things moving along. While I LOVE the base game experience, I wasn't sure we wanted to do a 3-4 hour video :)

    Do you have to place power tokens in your capital areas (for example in Winterfell when playing Stark) when you march all your units out of there?

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  9 років тому +1

      Nope, you don't need to do that if it's your home area. Each home area has the printed symbol for each house on it, so there's no need to leave a power token there. Hope that helps!

  • @Operative34
    @Operative34 6 років тому

    The winning card that I think was played is "A Stalwart Position" which does give Baratheon 2 Victory points if they control more Strongholds than the other houses. Strongholds, Not Castles! What strongholds is Baratheon claiming to hold? I count 2 Dragonstone and Kings Landing. You shouldn't count Crackclaw point, Harrenhal or the Reach as they are castles. Lannister also appears to hold Lannisport and Riverrun meaning that the card played is a tie and grants no victory points. Correct me if i'm wrong

  • @MrJL1995
    @MrJL1995 8 років тому

    I have the 2nd edition no expansions and i am pondering if i should buy the expansion, but i have questions regarding rules!
    Questions: 1. Does objective cards only come into place if no player have gotten the 7 fort/castles before turn 10. What are victory points apart from claiming forts? Do you count them on paper until the game is finished or until a player have 7 forts? I have played the original game and we go with that if someone has 7 forts, that one is declared the winner. Do you also add victory points after that or is the winner the one with 7 forts?
    Question 2: how did you get those badass miniatures with throne, sword and raven?

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  8 років тому

      +MrJL1995 To answer your first set of questions. You always play with the victory points and objective cards and the only way to win is to gain 7 victory points. The victory points are gained from fulfilling the objectives on the cards you currently hold. You can claim one objective per round if you have it completed. The objectives range from things like holding "X" strongholds to being in possession of the Raven token. Also depending on which house you're playing each objective card is worth a different amount of points. For example an area that would be easy for Lannister to hold would likely be worth 1 point, but for Stark it might be much harder to get to, so that would be worth 4 points.
      As for the upgraded versions of the tokens, everything there was bought from Amazon. I think I just searched from "Raven Statue" "Game of Thrones Ice Token" and "Iron Throne model"
      Hope that helps!

      This is using the the Feast For Crows mini-expansion which has you using the pieces from Tyrell to represent House Arryn. There's a fair number of changes from the base game with this expansion, that's just one of them. There's also objective cards and a totally different victory condition from the base game. It's also plays exactly 4 players, nothing more or less.

    If I have 4 or 5 players, and I make a move how long will I wait to make another move. About how many hours did your game take and how long would a full 10 rounds take? Also, great format for your videos! I enjoyed it.

      Can you even play with 5 people? or is it only even numbers of players?

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  7 років тому +1

      kunjapper this expansion we're playing in this video is a 4 player only version. It needs exactly 4 to play. The standard game mode allows for 3-6, but I think the best count is a full 6 players. Also, playing that way means a very long game. Very long...but awesome! Time between turns isn't bad because you are always paying attention to what's happening as everything affects you in some way.
      That said, this 4 player expansion takes about 2 hours start to finish. It has objectives that help push the game along and give it a much faster ending. Hope that helps!

    Great video. Hopefully you can helped me with a question. Played this last week for the first time and it was a bit differnt than you discribed.
    1) We were under the impression the house combat cards remain face down and pulled at random during the combat phase. Are you sure players choose which cards to use.
    After some debate We came to the conclusion that they we're random via a text card that read "if you lose combat you can place back in deck and RESHUFFLE Deck"

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  9 років тому

      The deck of house cards are used to select a character to add to a battle during combat. The players look at their hand of cards and choose 1 to play face down (and then reveal simultaneously). After combat is resolved that card is discarded. You don't get to choose the same card again you've used all other cards in the house deck (Page. 19 of the rules). Are you sure you're not thinking of the Tides of Battle optional variant (with the small cards)? I've never played with that variant but I do know there's a separate deck of combat cards that are drawn / shuffled during the game. That might be where the confusion lies? Hope this helps!

      Board Game Replay Thank you for the fast response, you 100% right, "both attacker and defender now secretly select one house card..." after spending literally over an hour just understating the basics of the game we easily missed that detail. felt like we spent more time learning the rules than actually playing, most complicated board game ever but defiantly worth it!

    Quick question about the House cards during combat. After you used one in combat, is it discarded? If not, then what would keep a player from spamming say Balon greyjoy?

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  9 років тому

      Yes, after you use one it gets discarded. Once you completely run out of House cards, you get your whole hand back. The interesting part is that your hand of combat cards is public knowledge. So at the beginning of each combat your opponent can ask to see your hand of cards that remain so they'll always know your options. Hope this helps!

    Forgot to explain what happens to armies that lose in battle. Fun video though. Is there a reason you used Tyrels instead of Greyjoys in the 4 player mode? I've read some people do that. Just wondering if you have the same opinion or if everyone should play that way now? Or is it a rule with the new expansion? Never mind. Just read another comment and your response that answered that question. Thanks.

      Thanks for the heads up. Yeah, do occasionally glance over rules during the overview, but it's usually just to avoid getting too detailed and lengthy. I like to give the basic idea of the game so the discussion makes sense, but not necessarily cover every rule in detail. Thanks for watching!

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  9 років тому

      Hey Felix, good question. I'd say this game certainly takes a bit longer to teach than others. The reason for that isn't necessarily rules complexity...it's more the sheer amount of little rules to know that makes it a tougher one to teach. Aside from Ports the rules are very easy to understand, there's just a lot of minutia with all the various phases, tokens, timings, etc. Once the ayers get past the learning curve though, the game is pretty smooth.

    Hey! Loved your show, but I have a question.
    The green ones are Tyrell house, right? When you play with 4 players tyrell is not available in a 4 players game or im wrong? Did you use a diferent rule? Im asking because I bought the game, and I want Martell house, but I wont have 6 players all the time.
    Thanks in advance!

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  9 років тому

      First of all, thank you for the kind words...much appreciated! To answer your question, we were actually playing with the A Feast For Crows Expansion and that changes many of the set up rules and positions as well as introducing House Arryn to the game. It also specifically calls for exactly those 4 houses to be played. House Arryn has it's own deck of house cards and objectives, but you still have to use the units and tokens from House Tyrell and that's why it looked like we played with them.
      The main reason we played with the AFFC expansion is because it keeps the main spirit of the game intact, but plays in a much shorter time frame. AFFC is balanced to support exactly 4 players and the objective cards help keep things moving along.
      Now for getting to play House Martell, I'm not familiar with any official rules to do that with less than 6 players unfortunately. Your best bet may be to head over to either the BGG or FFG variant forums and see what other people have tried or suggested. Hope this helps...thanks so much for watching!

      Hey Nicolas, I have heard of great variants regarding this game as the one for 4 players is not really balanced (read: blows).
      4 Players: Rumble in the South
      In this variant, Stark and Greyjoy are unplayable and their lands are impassable. The impassable regions thus include: Bay of Ice, Flint's Finger, Ironman's Bay, Seagard, The Mountains of the Moon and The Narrow Sea. This variant is excellent at creating a true 4-way battle with shifting alliances! However I tend to make the win condition only 6 castles instead of 7 to speed up the game.
      I copy pasted this one from BGG. Should you be interested in other variants, simply type into google: "Game of thrones the board game variants".

      You actually don't need a port to muster into the sea areas. On page 9 of the rules, if you look at the Mustering Example box's number 3, it shows Riverrun mustering a ship and just adding it to an adjacent sea space (even though Riverrun has no port). Hope this helps!

      Fearisclose64 Ok I just looked at there's nothing I can see that counts the Eyrie as a stronghold. It's purely a castle but does still provide you with 1 muster point. It's marked with the Highgarden garrison token at the start of the game to indicate that it's a home area as well. You are correct though, controlling the Eyrie does not let you muster ships because it does not have a port on, or adjacent to it.

    Which expansion is better, and how do they differ from the original games..... are they worth it? thanks for vid, and i love the original

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  10 років тому

      I have only played AFFC expansion and I can't really say it's "better" than the original game per say. The biggest change is that AFFC is meant for exactly 4 players. It also introduces objective cards that each house can attempt to complete making the game move a bit faster. While the base game is fantastic, it can have some small issues with different player counts (a full 6 player game is really best). So with that in mind AFFC is a great way to get a lot of the experience of the base game, but balanced well for 4 players.
      The other expansion A Dance With Dragons I haven't played, but it's meant for "expert" players. It requires exactly 6 players and no less. It gives every house a new hand of cards with completely different strengths and weaknesses from the base game. It also changes all the starting positions as well. It's something I really hope to try someday but just haven't had the time. I hope this helps!

      Freya Mikaelson There are cards in the Westeros Deck that trigger Mustering in the game. Whenever that happens players are given a certain number of "Muster Points" depending on the number of castles and or strongholds they control. They can spend these points to either upgrade their existing units or place new units into areas they control (respecting their supply limits). Footmen and Ships cost 1, Knights and Siege Engines cost 2. Footmen already on the board can also be upgraded to either a Knight or Siege engine for 1 point. Hope that helps! :)

    Sorry to break it to the Baratheon player but he didn't win the game. Strongholds are the big grey houses/castles on the board not the small brown ones, those are castles. Which means you guys were playing this game wrong. It would be way to easy for the Baratheons to get more castles then everyone else due to the fact that they have the most surrounding them, so why would it be worth 2 points?!?!?!

      @my2cents265 9 років тому

      Board Game Replay Yeah no worries, hahahaha it is very easy to get swept up in this game I find. I just got this expansion a few days ago and found that it doesn't seem very balanced for an overall game play experience. The Lannisters just have a clear advantage to the game straight off the bat and the Starks are just dead in the water very quickly as well. Have you guys played more and found this to be the case as well? My friends and I are trying to put in some house rules and tinker around with maybe giving the Lannisters less stars and the Starks at least one. Might break the game or make it better we feel that it needs some work to make it better.

    • @boardgamereplay
      @boardgamereplay  9 років тому +1

      My2Cents I'll totally agree that Lannister starts this one off with a big advantage because he's already got a guaranteed victory point every round and King's Landing is well fortified. I think this is all by design though. With repeat plays, all the players know the power Lannister has holding that spot and can gang up pretty hard and take him down early. This actually makes it pretty tough for Lannister to combat if he doesn't plan accordingly (as you can see I tried giving up the space early to avoid getting crushed). With that said I think you'll rarely find true "balance" in a heavily social and political game. One player having a particularly strong, or weak starting strength just means that they have to find interesting ways to work the other players at the table. We've played a game where Stark formed early alliances due to his non-threatening position and wound up destroying us all by the end. That whole political aspect is really the heart of this game as it ties perfectly into the theme as well. If you've ever played Cosmic Encounter, it's similar. Some Alien powers in that game are significantly stronger than others (by design), to force heavy social interaction throughout the game.
      That's just my 2 cents on it though. To each their own in finding what works best for the group!
