When I was a kid in the 90s my grandmother lived down the street from the truck-stop on what was Pumphrey's Farm. He was her landlord and she rented a cottage on his property. It was the CUTEST little cottage! She had it made up like a doll house in there. Mr. Pumphrey died from cancer and his widow and children did not want to take over the farm and sold the land to a housing developer. So grandma had to move. Broke her heart! The land now is completely unrecognizable with McMansions but was once fertile and quiet farmland. We miss it so!
When i was little my aunt lived right behind pumphrey’s in brightwood. we used to walk back and hang out with the horses. my cousin also fished pumphrey’s pond which is now located in shipley’s choice. pumphrey’s had a ton of land back there. at least 100 acres. i wish i could’ve seen the cottage. i spent so much time in those woods as a kid and teenager. it just went on forever and ever. now it’s ugly houses and roads. what a shame.
Those old truck stops at least has some soul. The corporate overpriced places aren’t great. The decline of small businesses continues and the wealth continues to accumulate to the few.
@@NS-hs6lt So true, at least they were unique. They'd all have their own little restaurants and their own decor. Modern truckstops are like walking into a Walgreens, just completely standardized across the country.

The whole place is like a museum. The diner and arcade were brilliant from the perspective of someone who remembers the 80s. I liked the fact that Dan didn't want to shoot a pixilated deer but instead opted for shooting dozens of humans instead 😂

Dan, the Doll motel is fantastic. Owner is absolutely amazing and has maintained the small family owned motel very well over the years. Thanks for a cool video on so many familiar places.

That's funny, I was thinking about that when he was riding through there, lol. I really liked the "Doll Apts" with that sort of mosaic brick pattern. One thing I didn't like was the discoloration of the brick under the AC units. They really should've considered either a normal central air system or at least a mini-split heat pump system where no air handler is used, instead the condensing element still sits outside but a separate wall-mounted blower/evaporator is used inside.
Dan Bell playing Operation Wolf in Crab Towne ( dont forget the E) is possibly the coolest thing ever, thank you awesome Sir, and try the sequel Operation Thunderbolt, it rocks as well. Nostalgia rules and so does DB!#!
I gotta say I'm impressed with the Doll Motel and Doll Apts. Well kept grounds, maintained buildings. At least from the outside they appear in good shape; a respectable if modest address? Depends on the neighbors of course.
We used to hang out in that truck stop restaurant all the time. My favorite part was the old smoking section and non-smoking section used to be separated by a sign, and the parties at White Gables were epic, and I love Crabtowne USA!
All of this reminds me of south Richmond (301, used to be known as Jeff Davis hwy, but now known as Richmond hwy) there were lots of random motels and apartments just outside RVA but on the way into chesterfield. It’s been 20 years since I went down there. Your video made me wonder what it looks like now.
So cool to see that arcade still thriving! I was sort of watching this in the background but the moment you walked in and I heard a Dig Dug machine I was locked in lmao. Keep it up Dan

Housing Commission Adds Doll Apartments Updated: Aug 2, 2022 The Housing Commission adds it's newest community. In March the agency purchased the Doll Apartments in Glen Burnie to be used as transitional, opportunity housing for persons and families needing assistance to end homelessness. The 16 apartments will be renovated and updated in late 2022. There will be an onsite case management center to assist these families with independence.
That truck stop kinda reminds me of a place called Arlene's Cafe & General Store in Elkton, Oregon. It's a really cool place to stop at on the way to the coast.
Only a few no tell motels left in city nearby us. A sketchy tiny trailer park was closed & torn down 25 years ago after a police stand off. Our company made us shelter in place until it was over. That was the last straw, and everybody got evicted.
9:40 I pass EVERY DAY to and from work and always wondered what that it would be like to stay their for atleast 1 night. I don't think they ever have a room vacant. 11:35 It is a functioning self carwash, but what keeps that place open, I'll honestly never know. Its so run down looking. Plus, you can't really see it from the road, it's too "tucked away"/hidden. 12:19 I'm always afriad of driving into that parkint lot because I feel like I'll burst into tears, it really is a depressing looking motel. (12:44 that white van has been their for quite along time and has not moved at all!) 13:40 The upkeep of this place is phenomenal.
