One thing I actually forgot to mention in the video but that's also important: until the abolition of the 3/5 compromise after the civil war, America was a "censitary regime" -- the more property you had (slaves specifically), the more votes you had. So functionally, the only people with a meaningful ability to even vote in American politics were the planter class.
