About ten years ago I was walking my dog (a Lurcher ) through the Cotswolds . A typical drizzly day , when Edith my dog saw two people walking she ran after them. One of them walked her back down the hill , ankle deep in mud. It was Rory Stewart, he said he had a Lurcher and his doesn’t come back. I was very impressed and have been a fan ever since. Top man.

After all it's something you're supposed to do before agreeing to any kind of contract BUT PM Boris Johnson didn't want scrutiny & threw out Rory along with 20 other Conservative MPs who had decades of experience in parliament between them. This made Rory an Independent MP.
Rory put country before party & lost. No previous PM has ever thrown out an MP over a vote. Only Johnson did.
Johnson also made sure that Rory had absolutely no support from the Penrith and the Borders Conservative Association by writing to them warning them not to back Rory in anything inc in any future General Election.
The President of the Association & others resigned over this.
In a very safe Conservative Seat Rory would not have had much hope in winning in any general election as an Independent MP...not unless other opposition parties gave way to Rory which didn't happen.
I mean the Lib Dems gave way for Dominic Grieve when he ran as an Independent candidate but he still only got half of what votes Tories got. But 3 times more than Labour.
Rory still wanted to do some sort of public service so thought he might have a better chance running for Mayor of London. But Covid stopped all that.

What an impressive interview! This is a man of real substance - you only need to look at what he has done to see that - but with the tact, courtesy, self-awareness and honesty to answer Morgan's questions engagingly and convincingly. He looks embarrassed to be called Britain's most popular politician, and I don't know whether that's an accurate opinion or not, but to hear Piers Morgan, not normally one to suck up to politicians, say that is quite something. It's a really civilised interview, with Morgan (mostly) allowing Stewart to say what he has to say and listening with interest. I'm glad that Sewart is still in the public eye, and I hope that, whatever ambitions he may have for public service, are realised, because from that I think can come only benefit.

Oh Rory - what could have been. You are so right about a lot of leaders including Boris Johnson. The trouble is the Tories chose him as their leader and he faced Corbyn in the following general election. People were thoroughly fed up with the process of Brexit despite the fact they had voted for it. His catch phrase was 'Let's get Brexit done' and of course they believed him! I used to be a Tory (many many years ago), but saw the light and changed to the middle ground.
