100% (not that the season 1 finale was bad or anything)
I think it’s so great because of how far the characters have changed compared to season 1, also it is better then the original finale

The only thing I think was better about Reunion was that they played a song while Toad Tower was collapsing and Sasha was falling, other than that, True Colors is better.
When Anne goes. "give him back...Give him back." It hit so hard and felt so much in that scene. Massive respect to Brenda Song for that moment.
I can't believe I forgot to credit the VAs - they did so much work to carry this episode!

It doesn't feel rushed or contrived though. It all feels in character. Anne's powers and Polly's legs were foreshadowed and I feel for Marcy.
I REFUSE TO SAY MARCY’S DEAD
“True Colors” really is the perfect name for the season two finale. Not only did it reveal Anne, Sasha, Marcy, King Andrias, and others’ true colors, but it also revealed the true colors of the show as a whole. Most of Amphibia has been seen as a light-hearted show about a girl in a frog world learning to get by and find a way home. The show did introduce some complexity to this initial premise, but it’s still familiar. However, the second half of season two and True Colors revealed that Amphibia is so much more than just a comedic light hearted show about a girl in a frog world. It is indeed a show with clearly high stakes, characters that make you believe they’re real, intense emotional moments, and the ability to make people remember the show for years to come.
I started watching Amphibia just for the comedic, light hearted nature of the show, and I was already satisfied with the show with season one. However, season two went far and beyond what I expected from the show, and as a result, it’s a show that I will always remember.
Sort of like Avatar: the Last Airbender.
The name perfectly shows that when situations escalate, people show their true colors
(Andrias stabbing marcy for the music box, anne berating and trying to kill sasha, marcy trapping her friends in order to save her old life from falling apart)
Not to mention Anne literally showing her true color.

This is exactly what a season finale should do. It gave me all the hype and screaming that I would get from a top tier Nintendo Direct or Avengers Endgame. True Colors is a masterpiece of buildup and payoff.

I have a theory that Andreas and his two friends are the same kind of beings that Sasha a Marcy and Anne are because Andreas is a Newt and his two friends are a frog and a toad just like how Anne got stuck with frogs Sasha got stuck with toads and Marcy got stuck with newts.
I do think that's the idea - there's this really cool parallel Andrias' friend trio will have to Anne, Marcy, and Sasha I think
Plus the colors of the characters match the colors of the gems and I think eh flashback the gems are visible on the sprig looking one
I just put together that each of the friends are quite similar to each race’s typical qualities. Anne is homely, plucky, adventurous. Marcy is intelligent, scheming, and agile. Sasha is brash, strong, and brave. Just like the frogs, newts, and toads.

What I’ve found elevates Amphibia above so many others is it’s self-awareness. It KNOWS whenever it’s going towards cliches or anything the audience expects and constantly works to address the fact that the audience knows what’s coming. In setting up all of its comedy as actively challenging the narrative it’s telling, it can do the same with its drama without it feeling forced or jarring. It’s spectacular.
True. Not many shows are able to that, and all the shows I’ve seen so far that have done it have been amazing

I think it's interesting that even the most common criticism of the episode- Andrias' true nature hiding under the tapestry and not being discovered was sort of hinted at and/or defended in a previous episode. There was a very easy to find button providing an entrance to a secret library that Marcy found hiding under a tapestry. I guess newts just REALLY hate touching and/or moving tapestries.
This is true! Plus, Andrias was likely just respected as the past 10 generations of amphibians only knew his kind, fun-loving side
@@The2ndDimension I guess now that I put some actual thought into it it's most likely Andrias just established a rule about not touching the tapestries to "preserve history" something of that sort.
The thing that made true colors such a masterpiece for me was that I was spoiled for Marcy's death, and yet the episode was so insane that I completely forgot about it until Marcy got freaking impaled.
Same! I saw someone say that she died but completely forgot about it till it actually happened cuz I was so distracted by everything else lol
True Colors is fantastic for so many reasons but I think the biggest one is that it shows you what all is at stake and that everyone and everything these characters know and love could be taken away from them. The episode really shows this through Sprig and Marcy’s near deaths. This episode shows that anything is possible and that everything is on the line
That's a great point! The episode does emphasize that Andrias will do whatever it takes - nothing is impossible!

I'm guessing in season 3, either Lady Olivia and General Yunan will escape with Sasha and Grime or King Andrias will lock them up so they don't tell anyone about the King's real plans.

I just know it
This character became an instant fan favorite upon their official introduction just before the series' halfway point, although they were in the intro and had been hinted at several times throughout the series prior to that. Later, this character was killed by fire in the season 2 finale, by a former partner of theirs. The partnership broke up when one betrayed the other, which they were always planning to do.
Amphibia and Gravity Falls both have a character who fits this description.

And to mention the continuity overload that this episode has is amazing. It's around Spongebob's Big Birthday Blowout levels of referencing previous episodes.

They knew they had a 10/10 show going into the finale, and they took it to 11. The music, the script, the freakin' animation all shown through in a beautifully crafted narrative. This episode just hit different, I don't know what else to say.

Maybe the scene was not the thing that got it delayed. But them not showing that Marcy was still alive, and them having to quickly get season 3 trailer ready showing she is not dead.
That was part of the compromise - showing the S3 intro so younger kids wouldn't be scared

Amphibia does such a good job of, regardless how insane an episode gets, always bringing the focus right back to the thing we all care about the most, the characters. You described this really well in your Reunion analysis, and they did the same thing here. This show excels at establishes major stakes, then takes a step back and uses those stakes to further our investment in the characters and their journey. This changes the massive, worldwide stakes in to individual character stories in a way that doesn't feel forced whatsoever. Its impressive.
Sasha takes over the entire kingdom of Newtopia, then without a beat, the episode shifts right in how these actions influenced Anne and Sasha's relationship, making the dramatic tension about how Sasha has gone too far, and lost Anne's trust forever. The story is about Anne trying to close the gates before the Toad army can get through and overrun the city, but the tension in that scene is again between Anne and Sasha, paying off the setup in the first scene by showing how Sasha now can't get through to Anne because she's cried wolf one too many times! We know Sasha is technically in the right at this point but we also know that Anne would be an idiot to trust her. When Andrias takes over again and shows his true colors, we start to get the setups for a fight scene, but then Marcy jumps in and makes the character drama between her and the girls, revealing how she wanted to adventure forever and ever because she was afraid of being alone. The fight may be about the music box, but the emotional drama happens when Andrias drops Sprig off the castle, when we connect with Anne's loss and her anger. Even the final moment is about Marcy and Sasha trying to make up for their mistakes, putting Anne's desires above their own in an attempt to help her escape.
I could go in to more detail, but the pattern you noticed in reunion of 'establish stakes, then shift focus right back on to the characters and their emotional turmoil' is one that when done correctly, is an incredibly effective and engaging storytelling device. Matt and crew pull off this technique perfectly, which means the epic stakes just add and build upon the character building, making us care about everything going on in the episode.
Another important thing was the phenomenal voice acting! Marcy’s pleading, Anne’s “Give him back!” And so more!
Just- chills, literal chills.
King Andries might be try to posses Marcy with the night so that way he can use Marcy to put Anne and Sasha (if she makes it) into a false sense of security.

When I first saw True Colors, I compared it to the Marineford Arc from One Piece which both are not similar, it did have a certain theme in which both left me emotionally wrecked and drained.
True Colors is a perfect finale for Season 2 of Amphibia and it blew Reunion out of the water (before someone jump the gun, I love Reunion too)
Personally while I did cry during Anne's calamity powers being awaken, I cried more during Marcy's breakdown. Maybe it's because Marcy is my favorite character (and best character of the show IMO) and seeing her going through all this really made me teary eyed.

true colors is absolutely one of the best *television* episodes I have ever seen, they were able to make everything so impactful, and they got away with STABBING SOMEONE IN THE CHEST ON THE DISNEY CHANNEL, just wow
I always assumed Andrias lived longer for the same reason he was so massive. That it had something to do with his genetics as a descendant of the royal family and wielder of all these weird ancient artifacts or if it has something to do with his species. I also was under the impression he wasn't exactly a newt but maybe a salamander or something (since some salamanders can live 10x that of some frogs). Not a very impressive theory but that frog was probably related to the Planters since she matched Sprig (and his coloring has been remarked as "strange" by a few characters in passing) and HopPop somehow had a book on the Calamity Box and how dangerous it is in the family library. If it was written by that frog in the flashback and she was also the one who stole it from Andrias and somehow brought it to the human world (maybe she opened a portal with it and chucked it through?) to keep it away from him that would make a lot of sense. One more cause I'm on a theory role here, I think Barrel's Warhammer that Grim has taken to using (and is clearly tied to the strength calamity jewel through it's magenta runes) might've belonged to the toad in the flashback making him Barrel. Maybe we'll get some history on that too. Anyway amped for season 3.

Honestly I never thought I’d see a animated show that would reach the level of gravity falls (story and emotionally speaking). The way the show was crafted to set up and benefit from the story is nothing short of amazing. Seeing it all pay off in the season 2 finale was incredible and I’m more than excited for season 3!

I think to explain King Andreas age has to do with that he’s a giant salamander, they can live up to 200 years old. But in amphibia the animals seem to live much longer lives than how we see them in our world.
Also I love this series so much, I didn’t think I’d like it when I saw commercials on TV until one day I ended up watching the S1 season finale and it was the last couple minutes and it drew me in and I can’t wait for S3.
Could be the night is some eldritch horror that gifted Andrias the power and immortality he has. Also I'm just hoping Marcy becomes the avatar/vessel for Night.

Andre's friends really messed him up to add on to villain part Andre's only sees this as a game he plays along until he gets his time to strike this was nothing but fun to him he didn't care who he hurt in the process as long as he got to finish this game and go on to taking over the multi verse.
Interesting to think maybe his friends shared in the guilt somehow. Might not have been just Andrias!

Which gave the king the mind set that friends are a waste of time and they just hold you back which may bring the question will the girls fall into the same whole that king Andre's and his friends or will they grow from it.

Yes and agree, according to IMDB, True Colors rate at 9.9 making it the highest rated episode of the series and among the highest rated Television episodes of all time. Because True Colors is a Masterpiece ❤️❤️❤️ Matt Braly will be proud that his show is amazing 😍😊

I cried during True Colors and Reunion
21:44 Something I didn't notice when I first watched this episode was the fact that Andrias and his friends are the colors of the Calamity Box's gems. Andrias = blue, the frog = red, and the toad = green. I wonder if they had the characteristics of the gems of the same colors, which would be surprising since I would've guessed the toad to have strength, the frog to have heart, and Andrias to have knowledge.

My real question is how are all the references to Gravity falls and The Owl House going to connect them?
I mean, this has just slowly grown and grown and now s3 looks like a absolute banger of a season.
Just looking at that teaser opening trailer, so so much is happening and all of it feels earned.
Words fail to describe how epic i find those storylines that grow out of nothing but become epic battles waiting to happen.
Like Sasha, at first i felt her character feeling 2D a cliche, but her path to becoming this epic hulk mode fighter really made me like her hot heade character.
And now seeing her being a freedom fighter against a army of frog robots (or frobots) is just way to epic. Like what is s3? it looks like they starting a marvel universe. Im so stoked to se these awesome frogs try and deal with the human world.
And imagen having being Anne, coming back having to relearn how to to eat food without bugs in.
Marcy’s meltdown hit so hard for me, as someone who deeply related with Marcy before, I completely understood her motives and why she did what she did (I could even see myself doing something like that if my situation was dire).The season finale as a whole was just a masterpiece. My only hope is that Amphibia doesn’t drag itself out like other shows have, after all there can only be so many “perfect season endings”
I'm sad that Bessie and microangelo stayed in amphibia but I'm hopeful that they have some presence in Sasha's resistance.

i think sprig being dropped was the saddest part for me. i started sobbing 😭 sprig falling slowly the montage of memories and polly and hop pop and ANNE.. OH MY GOD
Marcy truly is an amazing character, but I think part of that is because she is totally unique. I can’t think of many other characters from any show who have the same characteristics as Marcy does. A clumsy, quirky nerd with high energy isn’t something you see much of in the cartoon world...
Also, True Colors was the best finale I’ve ever seen. Yep...

Watching this episode was like watching “The Crossroads of Destiny” from Avatar all those years ago. It was perfect, emotional, filled us with such hope and such sorrow.
That is exactly how I felt when I watched it. It was the first time in a very long time probably since avatar that a show has given me that same feeling of hype and anticipation. I quickly compared true colors to crossroads cause honestly it has the same impact. That just shows how good amphibia is

To me true colours is great because true colors gave me the stars when I expected a cloud. And I would say this is even better than the season 1 finale

This episode was peak Amphibia. The whole series was phenomenal, but this episode was just the best part of the whole series.

I think Polly having legs is one of the most cursed things that has ever been in a show' s cannon.
If you pay attention, when Marcy is flipping pages in the Dr P book, you can see bill cipher on the page she stops on for a little bit.
And Matt Braly confirmed that it's not just an easter egg, he said that the book is a multiverse list (which means Gargoyles cartoon is also in the same multiverse as Amphibia)

Ok something I just noticed at 13:53, the “sprig’s relative” character has an orange crystal on their coat that looks SUSPICIOUSLY like a different calamity crystal. Another thing to note is that the three’s skin colors correlate to each of the crystals’ colors (Andreas = blue, frog = red, and toad = green. Andreas possibly was a previous host for the crystals).
Man, they made 2 absolutely perfect season finales.
I love how ancient technology looks like Sheeka technology from The Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild.

Not gonna lie, love how they manage to still make you feel bad about character deaths even when you know with 100% certainty that they're not gonna actually die because Disney cartoon.
This was an incredible season finale. I am so hyped for season 3. Will you do a season 3 intro analysis? Also, I really wanna know how the first episode of season 3 will start. If it begins with Anne realizing what just happened to Marcy and the plantars hug her, 😢😢😢😢😢

Amphibia is the first show in a while that SURPRISED me with the direction and tone shift it had in season two. It was just the fun frog show to me that was generally good over all, but I wasn't obsessed with it. But season 2? And especially true colors? Changed my perspective on the entire show as a whole. suddenly I realized that season one was mostly about building Anne's character and her connection to wartwood so when season two came along they could focus more on Marcy and Sasha and the overarching plot. And because they did season 1 the way they did you really understand and feel Anne's connection to the planters and to wartwood. I love found family, and I've seen it in a lot of media I watch, so I mean it when I say Amphibia has done one of the best jobs pacing their found family and making it feel real and important to the main character that I've seen in a long time. Just the little moments, like hop pop referring to her as his adopted granddaughter, and Anne calling them her "bumpkin frog family" really added toward making her grief about losing sprig feel so raw. They put a lot of time and effort towards developing their bond especially in the first season, which I didn't even realize the extent of until true colors. How they are pacing the show is phenomenal and I really hope they keep up the good work!
Especially the episodes centered around her trying to pay back the planters because they've done and risked so much for her. She's aware of and acknowledges how much they've done for her, she's completely aware that it couldn't have been easy to take her in and help her so the very first episode of season 2 she's shown trying to fortify the house to pay them back. It's easy to put together a rag tag group of people and call it found family, but amphibia actually goes into roots of what makes a family a family. Even the scene where hop pop is doing taxes and says Anne is a deductible is important because all the little stuff like that really helps solidify the fact that not only are they letting her stay in her home, but she becomes in every sense, a member of their family. The raw grief she showed at the idea of losing sprig coupled with the flashback of their important moments was amazingly well done but what made me cry the hardest was their use of the end credits scene. Because it's small, it's not this monumental moment between the two, it's just her and sprig reading books and falling asleep, it's ever present just like their friendship, comfortable and always there. Which makes the thought of losing it so much worse. To us as the audience, and to Anne herself.
I'm so very happy that Amphibia got nominated at Annie Awards with 3 nomination this episode True Colors include Best TV SHOWS/Media for Children and I hope they won there on Feb.26 which will announce the winner 😉🤩

amphibia's writing, especially for their finales, is absolutely spectacular. i love that each character has depth, growth, and is allowed to be morally gray.
That episode was just perfect, and that’s not even an hyperbole, they literally got every single point right
Fun easter eggs (idk if its really true, but thats what i found):
1. When Anne and Sasha fights in s1e20 Sasha uses her cloak to make her fall and (almost) win, in s2e20 when they fight again, Anne "learn ed" from Sasha and used it against her.

2. When Sprig falls they show all of them crying except Sasha (they showed Grime but he is just shocked) cuz she care less about him (maybe she didnt even cried).

3. When Andrias jumps, Anne falls but Marcy casualy standing. Its probably because she already used to it while its the first time Anne experienced it.

You know how much GOOD the music in this episode was.....you just putting small bits of the Anne calamity theme and the new ending credits....make me tear up.....no visuals, just the MUSIC.....damn this show, and that's just music, put all the amazing, fantastic work, artist, board, voice cast, writers, etc, did, and you get one of the best episodes ever made in Disney TV animation....Amphibia season 2 elevated this show from great....to LEGENDARY.
I have a feeling that the Dr P on the book Marcy found out about the calamity box was either Dipper or Stanford Pines, Stanford obviously wrote the journals so he might've wrote a book while he and Stanley were on there adventures, but Dipper would be around 21 (supposedly) around this time so that could mean he wrote it, there was also a Bill Cipher in the book so there is some more proof

I think Andrias is gonna showcase how Annes friendship with Sasha and Marcy could’ve ended without the growth they had in Amphibia. He might also be exactly what the second temple guardian feared. He’s heart without responsibility. (Possibly)
