Howard Shore - The Breaking of the Fellowship - Alternate Version | NZSO

- Shore recorded this early version of "The Breaking of the Fellowship" with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The sequence was reedited before the London recording sessions, so after he re-scored the music, the London Philharmonic was asked to perform the new arrangement. The NZSO's stunning performance, however, can still be heard under the Fan Club credits on the Fellowship Extended Edition DVD.
Music composed, orchestrated and conducted by Howard Shore.
Lord of the Rings has the biggest heart of any soundtracks written the last 100 years. No soundtrack touches the essence of its movie more than this one. It's not music, it's a living breathing organism that complements your soul. The only other music that ever did to me what Lord of the Rings did, is Richard Wagner's grail operas. Breaking of the Fellowship is a similar experience to hearing Lohengrin Overture for the first time. It transcends humanism. It opens up a part of your soul that may possibly never have been opened up until that moment.
Yeah the soundtrack is my favourite 'character' of the trilogy.
Those notes that hit as Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli give chase, cutting to Sam and Frodo, hits me like no other peice of music does
Absolutely phenomenal perspective on this! This is one of the most essential, transcendental film scores of all time. The labor of love that Howard Shore put into every note, motif, and theme is something that, as you say, stands among the classical composers of yore. Just incredible and soul-stirring.
Omg I didn’t know until just now that I came here for your comment. Thank you!
You’re absolutely 100% spot on. I’m glad I’m not alone, even if I’m 2 years late to this comment.
Got this bad boy saved to come back to every now and then, considering it’s not on Spotify like the rest!
Shore composed one of, if not the greatest soundtrack of all time
definitely
Agree 💯
Certainly podium
This song reminds me of everything that's good in this world
Lestatfol I couldn’t have described it better.
And it''s worth fighting for.
04:15 - 04:40 !!
The crownless again shall be King.
"All that is Gold does not glitter and all those who wonder are not lost." Gandalf.
"Wander"
Bilbo wrote that, not Gandalf
I don't know if this makes sense, but this version (mostly, the performance) is far less "commercialized". More lingering, more thoughtful. Much preferred. Well done, NZ Symphony!
Yeah, I feel the same.
@@CosmicAxolotl yes
Same feeling here!
“My own journey turned out to be quite different”
There will ALWAYS be a place for Middle-earth in my heart.
That would be with our Lord.

"I'll never let go, Mr. Frodo!"
"Sam, you're going to make it home and have lots of babies. Promise me, Sam!"
This is amazing - the original version is the most memorable soundtrack music piece for me, and Howard Shore could top it with an (even better) alternate version. This version of the Shire motif at the end is just a real tearjerker, even more than the original.
This version is emotion in its purest form
04:14 Hunting Orcs!
I find 4:57 more powerful than the original film version, this is so breathtaking!
Jackie Boyd you are welcome !
You hear this version in the Battle of the Five Armies Featurette promoting the movie prior to its release... when we see the montage of all the Hobbit trilogy and LOTR trilogy parallels...
Stunning. Thank you Howard Shore for this masterpiece.
Nemlon It’s breathtaking !
I didn't know this existed and I'm so thrilled and sad to hear it.
This is My Favorite Part of the Fellowship of the ring Extended Credit Edition's Suite.

been looking for this version for ever!!! it was on TBOTFA extended edition, they used it in the "Andrew Lesnie tribute".. bought tears to my eyes... from the orinial film version this is just so much better and emotionally charged
This one is still missing 2 or so minutes from the original recording though :-(
@ javed henderson Me too I totally lost it at 4:57 poor us.😚😚😪😪😪
Disagree that it's better than the official
It’s much more layered and emotional than the final one.
Rest In Peace wonderful Andrew Lesnie

This is the most beautiful music I have ever listened.
I am learning japanese :)
Terror Channel
Good luck. I’ll be rooting for you!
Listen to the official soundtrack version... It's even BETTER
@@DontHatemusiK for me ths version is better but i love both to death. maybe its because i looped the first version for a year straight before finding this one
One day when I’m gone from this world I would like to leave it as borimir did lay me on a boat and let me drift off to undying lands where I’ll know peace and happiness away from all the troubles in the world
The beauty they introduced in the world with this trilogy, it's impossible to be indifferent.
3:06 Magnificent.
That man would not accept the ring because he understood everything.
... this piece describes my anticipation to New Zealand this August.
Thanks for uploading.
Ali Can how was New Zealand? I really wanna go there for holidays.
I hope it was an amazing adventure
Tolkien + Jackson + Shore.....It was a match made for heaven but given to earth. THANKS TO ALL OF THEM!
Its the every day deeds
Amazing and beautiful. The music just adds so much more depth and emotion to a fantastic movie.
LOVE the 02:25 Gregorian Chant melody
I can just about tell what part of the scene that this music is in. For I've watched it enough times know so.
The flute at the end is so sweet to listen
Now I don't even know which version is closer to my heart... I think this one is special. I cry literally every time when I hear this theme
@Jackie Boyd You're not alone here. 😪😪😪
It’s incredibly moving. It’s a fuller sound than the official one
This should be used in a closing montage for the series finale of The Rings of Power. We see the harfoots settling in the shire, Elrond settling in Rivendell, Galadriel settling in Lothlorien, Isidulr in Gondor, etc etc…
…And then tons of Tolkien purists punch me for getting the canon chronology wrong 😂
The NZSO sounds great here!!
Proud Kiwi
This music is heavenly
Actually they’ve just put a small Mozart concert on their fb page
This track makes me do that face Legolas does anytime someone dies. I love how it dips in and out between the version in the movie and the parts that were changed, like it's both, all the way through, not just a whole section that got cut out or something. It's really moving and elegant and both the original, and this version, are my favourite parts of the entire LOTR soundtrack.
Where can we find all those alternate versions? Are they available?
I think that the final version of this track that appears in the movie is much better. But I'm still very happy that this version exists.
Update after few months: After few hundred more listenings last few months, I'm happy to say that I appreciate this track a lot more. Still don't think that it's as good as final version that was in FOTR, but I love it so much. Listening to it is like a spirtual experience. I love how this particular version of The Breaking of the Fellowship was used in Andrew Lesnie's Tribute in Battle of the Five Armies appendices. Incredible flute parts.

I will always love the hobbit and lord of the rings
what a discovery. Thank You.
howard shore is a genius!
the day this music come to his mind, i'm sure Tolkien's spirit was there. , close, and inspired Mr Shore., for this Sound is the hope of Middle Eath
❤ stunning ❤
ANY version of this will always be perfect.
getting major jame's horner vibes from this. woo!
1.15 to 1.45 pure valour
Music that needs no words.😇😇
Thank you Howard
:')
a little different
I agree that this version if phenominal, but cmon guys, its not better then the final version. I love the theme at 3:09, but the end of the movie is not the place to introduce a new leitmotif for the Hobbits. Using the shire theme for the moment where Sam and Frodo hug is far stronger. I really love swapping the Fellowship Theme coming before the Road Goes ever on theme at 4:15, but it doesn't make up for the fact that this version doesn't have the drums at the climax of the song. The drums completed the finished version in my opinion, and it feels a bit empty without them.
einfach nur wunderbare Filmmusik. besser geht nicht. Spitzenklasse.
Thomas G. Meisterwerk!
Me: I wish Naruto and Hinata were never sealed in that dimension, and I even wish that Ada's omnipotence never let Kawaki take everything from Boruto. I wish none of this had happened.
0:55 God: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you.
[1:14 At that moment, Straw Hat Ryan heroically decides that he will do everything he can to make sure there is a possible way to undo Ada's Omnipotence and restore everyone's memories of Boruto as well as bring Naruto and Hinata back to the shinobi world no matter what]
Man don’t talk about Naruto on a Lord of the Rings video
Fantastic! Is that version available somewhere on CD?
No, It appears and the credits of the extended cut DVD/BD
3:09 is the quite honestly the single most hauntingly beautiful piece of music I've ever heard in my life. Well done, Howard Shore.
Liked this version but think the official one is much better and emotional
patrick taylor welcome in club!
Yeah, same from your part of this soundtrack, and a few other pieces to this music.
I mean you can hear where he was going this was the demo idea that developed further into a full on final version but the main theme is there just the orcestration in the final version in my opinion is more polished ...
Yeah from 3:09 it's beautiful and a great alternative to what we got in Fellowship.
For me, my absolute favourite combination of notes in any peice of music, is the part where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli give chase, with the cut to Sam and Frodo.
it's good he had the time to reedit some of the stuff, perfection doesn't come immediately
