Think about it: this is the juice of 50 years guitar playing experience from one of the greatest of our time. It's invaluable.
This video is literally one of the best things a beginner guitarist can learn to take their playing to an intermediate level.
If I had a lesson like this as a much younger player, I'd have better been able to appreciate Hendrix and even Bluegrass.
Yeah but it takes intermediate level to really understand the value of it.
@@hetkapatel5111 Absolutely, a beginner would have no clue what he is talking about. It's only after you're sweated and wandered and experienced musically for years (more like a decade) that then what he says becomes crystal clear. Looking back if i had heard this interview lesson twenty years ago i would not have appreciated the meaning of it. But now it's like yep makes absolute sense. Music is such an elusive art, a beginner does not even know what he is trying to accomplish or getting into.
When I lack the drive to play guitar i watch this video and it keeps me going. Thanks Joe for being an inspiration. Ur fan in Philippines.
One of the best things about this is the interviewer isn’t monopolizing the conversation, he’s letting Joe talk. As a beginner, I’m watching everything, how he’s holding the pick, his finger positioning on the fret board. It’s intimidating because I thought, these videos are for more advanced players and not for beginners/intermediate like me but joe explains things in such a way, that it’s easy for any player regardless of level to follow and understand.
I remember meeting Joe when I was about 19 or 20. He was such a sweet man. Very humble. Very eager to talk to his fans and get down to their level and listen. Such an inspiration.
I’ve been playing for 25 years and I never grow tired of these lessons 🎸😎🎸
Never stops inspiring. Thanks for making these Guitar World!
Thanks God for the Internet and people's natural drive to share their knowledge, making it possible to get priceless advice from masters right in your living room, for free.
Although I wish I'd had that 25 years ago, I know I have it now, and I just even more aware of the value of it.
A Philosophical approach to teaching makes for great learning. Amazing player but also an awesome teacher.
Always a pleasure listening to Satch. Such a spontaneous and an intellectual guitarist. Thanks +Guitar World for this.
New respect for Joe. Class act. Love the series.
Mr. Satriani,
Hard to believe I came across this. Thank you Sir for taking the time to share these thoughts. I'll be tuned in for sure.
Dave in the Adirondacks
Really great lesson, thanks so much! it's lovely to see even the greatest players go through exactly the same problems :)
He is the reason why i started playing guitar. Love you joe.
Marvin Memoracion same
He is the reason I only own Ibanez guitars. My wife walked down the aisle to him playing Cannon in C.
@@FatLewis i would love to own a js some day. Thats why i work hard here in the philippines. God bless brother.
@@marvinmemoracion2938 Wish I'd have seen this a year ago bro, won a brand new JS240PS which I had no interest in (prefer the Jem's) I sold it super cheap!
Wish you the best, keep on rocking!
Awesome guitarist and an awesome teacher of music and guitar 🎸🔥
He is such a great teacher and orator - plain speaking genius!
You r the best teacher joe..i need more explaination from you
The stars have aligned....my first lesson WILL last my lifetime.thank you,I've played since 14,to59,!,,fulfilled!!...p.s..New rays from an ancient sun..!....😐
The king of guitar melodies and sounds
If you've ever played...then you know Joe speaks the truth about guitar....this is why this is so interesting..to hear the truth and learn....I've been playing for years yet I find this so refreshing.
I love how soft spoken Joe is compared to his playing
The king has spoken 🙌
He's the greatest att this type of music
To Mr. Satriani thank you for your time your selflessness and you’re willingness to share freely your outstanding talent but more importantly the information that you’re providing us about learning how to play the guitar I saw this years ago and I thought to myself maybe not this particular video but look at this Joe Satriani is the only person out there giving free guitar lessons online he is extremely unselfish not to mention one of the absolute greatest guitar players alive who does not get the credit he deserves of course commercially we know all about that it’s all about politics here’s another man who’s put hours and hours and hours into his Craftsmanship and is willing to share it with everyone that part is still I can’t even comprehend because I’m probably that selfish with my time these videos I should’ve watched years ago I’m not sure how much any of these were available is this particular series although I knew I was not ready for them having kids raising them making sure they got the school etc. playing through below standards equipment can definitely be a deterrent in your inspiration or willingness to chase your dream and work for it equipment is important but so is knowledge and this man is free Sharing his knowledge with the world for nothing you just have to sit down and take the time and focus and listen to what he’s going to say and then try to just practice what he’s asking you to practice he’s even showing us the short route OK you can make a great song out of two notes the Clapton song for us as matter fact I’ve been trying to buy a satriani rig used from someplace out of San Rafael that won’t answer your eBay account I know he bought it to reproduce the Montrose sound he was hired to reproduce by Sammy Hagar when they were doing all the old Montrose with chicken foot and everything else connected with Montrose it self what a humble individual I’ve also read articles about him saying he just cannot him see him self playing Richie Blackmore‘s part from Deep Purple and he could do it but I understood we were trying to say the whole idea of trying to be Richie Blackmore once again his humility shines through wow what an outstanding individual the war learn about this guy I am just floored maybe that’s what it takes remove Ego from self to become that what you desire to become Boy I hope I get a chance to go see this guy one day live I’m sure it will be a phenomenal experience thanks for your help for those of us I’m speaking for me now that beat our heads against the wall trying to learn how to play this instrument thank you for your time have a wonderful day keep rocking
Hey guys! Where we can find the tabs or the excercises? Does anyone else know?
so much wisdom. thank you
You are an inspiration
saw him last night in houston
Using that F#min over A major is such a Jimmy page sound. That relative minor is my no. 1 guitar hack.
Thank you Mr Joe sir
Thankyou Joe .., its very cool
Man spot on keep talking . Best to all 2020 Scottish and he has a great voice , out of tune lean back pull and breack the neck man thats a fabulas Orange . Am a beginner and am 62 mmmmmm great video .
The Silver Surfer, Alien. This is so connecting with an artist I adore. "Genius is mysterious" (Barbarella).
Where do i find these "Figures" that keep popping up? Does anyone know what it is referring to?
Thanks Joe, fantastic
When you are before a genius, you always think that his craft is simple. Satriani makes playing guitar an intuitive thing.
Dopo la mia malattia di chemioterapia ascoltandoti mi hai ridato la voglia di vivere grazie Joe satriani sei il meglio di tutti. Grazie per la tua musica ,grazie per avermi dato la voglia di vivere
Where can you get the diagrams or tabs that are referenced here - like when it says figure x.xx
Real cool man!
Where are the figures to get?
Can anyone help me with where the box or shape is he plays a few licks in from 5:26, and again at 5:53 ish
Is there a tab to this whole series?
Satriani is a blessing
Joe's tone is SO good. I wonder how he does it?
Guitar world, Where is the note or mention that the tuning is Eb??
Man: Aledort and Satriani have some chemistry. The latter is way more charming than I ever anticipated and the former is just a prince. What a great series: thanks Guitar World.
What's that neck pickup ? Anybody?
Never mind. It's a Sustainiac. Duh!
Of course your a good teacher too. Haha great advice on instruction
Im fairly knew to learning guitar what are these "figure 20" captions for the licks hes playing whats a figure
It corresponds to the guitar magazine that it came from.
Joe the Boss
Please get Dave Murray next !
Yeeeesssssss
Why is the framerate so low on the close ups?
How can you put a tumb down when Satriani is explaying his life and revolution mind. I don't get it.
Ahhh, the days before UA-cam were so enlightening.
Does someone know how many videos on the series are next? They made a intro for the Vai videos but not Sach's :(
R D , the Vai is a 5 segment lesson. In guitar world it lasts about 12 pgs with about 45 examples. Depending on how long they make the videos I would imagine they are 3-5 segments worth of material.
Go back and watch the video again and pay no attention to the content of his words. Erase the guitar from the video frame. Listen to him talk. Listen to the comfort of his voice. Listen to his phrasing. Listen to the confidence and ease. There is nothing jerky. There is no awkwardness. There is no apologizing or surprise emotions. It is smooth and his own.
The guitar is a piece of wood. Nothing else. You allow it to speak. It will speak just like you and your mood.
Next time you play guitar forget about the music. Be the most relaxed and confident person you can be. No mistakes come from you. What ever happens is intentional.
This is one of the best guitar lessons you will ever have.
Exactly. Gentleman.
Musicistherapy I agree entirely. Attitude and emotion is what makes music good past a certain threshold of playing abilities
Great
Where are those firgures they’re talking about?
Respecet for thr blues roots. Thinking and talking. Loves when he Plays with feel. whitout thinking.....too much :)
is this video slowed down? His E is not E, but lower
What frame rate did you guys shoot this in? It's so choppy.
When you finish building the Satriani Lego kit it ends up being a black hole time portal that lets you hang out with Jimi Hendrix!
whrt arent you at 440 hertz??
patrick varencaus yes, he is... but the guitar is tuned to Eb Standard.
I’ve noticed a lot of modern players not bending notes; lost art & skillsets? 🤔
Man, Joe is so intelligent., I can't keep up
Amazing lesson, great insights.
Damn he is amaing
I feel like I'm in the church of Satriani, very nice guy
"rocking out in A minor is the same as C major" , would this simply mean that they shared similar notes?
Yes.
A minor is the relative minor of C major, so they share all the same notes.
Yes, although it may sound a bit different since in A minor the notes revolve around A and in C they revolve around C. But if you learn one of the relative minor or major, you'll have an easier time getting it in your head than the one where you had no frame of reference
7:27 : Chords of life´s first solo :)
20 years playing still a beginner. Haahha. This is a mind opener
Satch is the number One 🎸🎸
WHAT REVERB IS THAT???? SETTING?? LOVE IT!
I guess it's a Fractal Axe FX setting. They are all good, in their proper place. I realize that's not super helpful.
Most likely Reverb off his Marshall Signature JVM heads.
Frank Speer I think most if not everyone uses an Axe Fx here, you could probably find the sound it was modeled from if you do a bit of digging
I love real spring reverb, but I dont hear the "sproing" here...
pure fucking GOLD!!!!!
his guitar like a candy! big big candy. so cool
Naahh it is classic muscle car color but if you like your car as candy that's ok.
thats great. if thats car, will be enough for couple of months.
You know you're a virtuoso, when you can wear shades and a cap indoors and no one questions it.
I like those sunglasses :D What are they?
haahhahahahahahahahahaha
cheap sunglasses by zztop
rayban cockpit classic polarized
Shades.
Joe satriani 👏👏👏👏🎸🤦♂️👍✊
Hard tail, set neck, ebony with stainless frets, bone nut.... old school bender here
E to D...Gloria
invite John Petrucci
though a few can play his licks!
DARTH VADER , he will be in the next issue. April guitar world. He's the third 'master' :).
Explore with the aufience when u try different things.
I agree about the I'm So Glad part: Cream was a free sound idea and that's not taught in schools. I think they, along with The Hendrix Experience were very influential in stretching the boundaries of rock to include free jazz, or 'free blues' and raga influences etc
Still have my surfing with the alien.....tattoo😅
i believe your guitar is tuned half a step down and you made no mention of it. Also missing figure chart....very sneaky guitar world...
8:56 when you understand modes finally hahahaha
Know relationship, relative to each other...have perseption..the economy of notes...shit, got to be intelligent for being great.
..So True Guitars always go out of Tune..like when he said "got 2 more minutes on the song ",..an the bands looking at u pissed...Also thanx Guitar World for your many years of ur magazine's I've used as reference to many songs..An also Remember An read Guitar World Iissue #1..With Eddie Van Halen on the cover with that cool dragon Guitar!..What ever happened to that guitar?...:)..
God has spoken.
I love when very accomplished guitarists say “I can’t play it there”, and when they play it, it sounds great haha
Joe Satriani is GOD!!!!
"u need to know how far is too far"
He is a teacher of perspective, how to look at things and process what you are experiencing. You're not going to get that from the million plus how to play the guitar on youtube. Instead of resisting, why not move closer to the edge to get a better view of what you are actually missing!
Noel Gallagher didn’t know any of this when he wrote Live Forever lol
I had a dream last night I was sitting on a couch and Joe satriani was on the other couch. I asked him for a lesson since he was right there. He gave me a timing lesson about keeping time with my foot. So I'm here first thing in the a.m. was never a fan of his, don't know where it came from. Don't know any of his music.
He is tuned down a half step
so annying, what's the point tho
You could buy Elixir string Joe!,,,, they keep the tuning👍😂😂😂
Joe seems like a good guy. Wish he would ditch the shades though.
Thanks, Matt Shadows
TOOLS This guy has a snap on box full...
Satch predicts "boomer bends" controversy @15:19
