SPIDER-MAN: Why MYSTERIO Was Right (And Inspired the MCU's Thunderbolts) Marvel Villain Explained
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 гру 2021
- Mysterio was the villain who ultimately brought down Peter Parker, and framed Spider-Man in the eyes of the public. He was able to convince the world that he was a hero as great as Iron man, and the heir apparent to the Avengers. Even though he was a villain, you have to admit--he had a point. The way Mysterio used manipulation and fake news to control people is all too-real. And it's also a big sign post for the creation of the Thunderbolts, or dark Avengers. A team of "heroes" that will likely include Zemo, US Agent, Abomination, Yelena Belova, and more.

What other villains were right?
Thanos, Killmonger, Ultron
@@ignorantenlightenment Yes definitely Ultron. If everyone is dead there are no problems anymore.
Madvillain
Karli
Your mom
I think what's even scarier is that even if Mysterio is proven to be a fraud, that betrayal alone could be enough to weaken any public faith in heroes
Also you’d have stupid “Mysterio Truthers” who believe the lie and think the truth is false and still worship him and hate Spider-Man. Because people are dumb like that.
Enter the mutants ?
This!!

I just re-watched Far from Home again last night and I really think Gyllenhaal was the perfect choice for Mysterio. He has the good looks and leading man air about him that makes you believe he definitely could be a superhero, yet he also plays the creepy jaded manipulative guy incredibly well.
Yeah, he can project the “I’m no hero” vibe to the public and the “We’re the real heroes” vibe to his henchmen equally well. His confidence allowed him to embrace his belief in both of these ideals. He really sells it!
I was doing the same and also thought this! He’s been my fav Spider-Man villain from all 3 diff movie series
+srayj
Yep!
Far from home was wayyyyy better than what it remembered when I watched it again last week
According to Taylor Swift he is actually a manipulative guy so lol
The fact that Mysterio was down to shoot Peter in the face makes him top 3 villains in the MCU. Cold blooded.
Also down to fuck his whole world up even after he was dead just out of spite. Absolutely heartless
"Today people are more concerned with winning an argument than the truth"
Wasn't expecting the deep dive but I'm all for it 👊
What do you mean "today?" It's always been that way.
@@philv2529 used to be harder to find support if you're a crackpot
@@yugitrump435 yeah the internet let's fringe peeps find each other and then they end up reinforcing each others confirmation biases
@@philv2529 I would agree, but it's even worse now. With the creation of social media, people are more prone to wanting to win an argument more than actually stating their true beliefs and losing that argument. Like Twitter.
@@thecaptain7755 Does losing an argument immediately indicate that you're wrong? Not trying to start an argument. Genuine question
"Quentin Beck is a bitter, resentful narcissist." For someone who hates Tony Stark, Mysterio sure acts like him LOL Then again, so are many villains Iron Man goes up against. Loki, Ultron, Hammer, Killian. Like he's a magnet for villainous versions of himself!
Most comic book villains are meant to reflect an aspects of the hero they were created to fight.
I'm really REALLY hoping that the *most* accurate portrayal of an evil Tony Stark ends up being the Green Goblin to Spider-Man. It would make so much sense to end Tom Holland's 6th and final film as Spider-Man with a version of Green Goblin who is almost EXACTLY like Tony Stark just wayyyy darker. It makes sense because Tom Holland's Peter started off fighting alongside Tony as Iron-Man and then his final villain would be a dark reflection of his previous mentor. I agree with you on these villains, they all do reflect Tony's character. But Norman should be the most accurate reflection we get.
Kang. Lol
He's kinda an accidental villain if you think about it
Like that saying “you have more in common with your enemy than your friends”
It's funny how Mysterio was played very much like Syndrom from The Incredibles.
Só true....AND WHEN EVERYONE IS SUPER....NO ONE WILL BE....
How is this even a question? Mysterio saved my brother in London. How could anyone think that Spider-Man could EVER be a hero after he straight up murders Mysterio for that?! HE'S A MENACE!
LMAO
Spider-Man also killed night monkey may he RIP.
@@discolullaby5777 Another victim of this monster. Night Monkey trusted this... thing. We all did. But Night Monkey paid the ultimate price. Peter Parker may LOOK like us, but inside he's anything but human.
Misterio was trying to kill Peter. Peter just defended him self it was his life or the other.
@@irismedina3405 I've seen the video. Mysterio was murdered trying to defend London.
Remember that wasn’t Fury, Talos.
I believe if that WAS the realFury he wouldn’t trust Mysteriously so readily.
True
But Peter did, which lowered his guard since if Fury says Mysterio is a good guy than why would he think otherwise.
So, all in all, Talos screwed up as the world's mightiest agent
@@katearcher8514 Secret Invasion
@@gregoryhyman4621 that's a lot to process, as I've never seen any comic books. I just deal with the problems as they come at me in the MCM
Another incredible analysis - this is SO much more than some clickbaity "Thanos/Killmonger/etc Was Right" essay. Mysterio was our introduction to Phase 4, and the strongest additions to Phase 4 all feature some manner of manipulation of public image and/or narratives. I can only hope that No Way Home, and the rest of Phase 4 in general, continues this trend of thematic antagonists.
Well said!!
Syd Nyman was right
Another great essay, extremely relevant to the world we're living in today. Thank you.
This goes back to how I've seen a lot pf people hate on phase 4 because it's not as huge and fantastical as phases 1-3 but I think that's the point. Phase 4 is all about looking at the aftermath of the infinity saga. Four of the Avengers are dead, one Avenger just had a nervous breakdown and enslaved an entire town, the guy who was meant to be the new captain america murdered a man in cold blood, another Avenger is being accused of murder, the world of superheros is falling apart and the world is confused. I love this collective narrative of chaos on a human level, it's more believable, it's relatable, and it will just make the eventual team up that will happen in either phase 5 or 6 against either Kang or Galactus or both that much more special
That’s not why people don’t like it, it’s all the force political bs, and pandering. Replacing all the men with woman because??? The characters I liked are all gone except for Spider-Man… and apparently he’s gonna go make Sony movies. So why would people like me stay when the people creating the new movies don’t care?
@@discolullaby5777 This. People still love to conveniently ignore the real reasons why people are upset. I don't hate Phase 4. You may disagree with me on this, but I actually like the IDEAS around Wandavision, F&WS, Loki, and Hawkeye. I've given them all a shot, and there are a lot of things that I like, and some of the characters really do develop well. But it doesn't change the fact that there are clear propaganda moments as well. That speech at the end of F&WS? There was 0 nuance in that. No real critical thinking. No addressing problems from every angle possible. Just the system telling us what to believe. Having a female Loki pretty much take the lead? Again, raw pandering to people who've never even read a comic in their lives.
Its not that those of us who are upset aren't "deep enough", as many people would love to believe, its that we don't like propaganda.
@@discolullaby5777 People like you? Incels? Trump supporters?

I just love how Mysterio is probably the most irredeemable psychotic on screen Spiderman villain, which is just entertaining af
Um. You're aware WILLEM DAFOE played a Spider-Man villain, right?
@@jcaseyjones2829 he did and his character is psychotic alright but u can see wut drives him become this, he’s not always mental, sure he’s not always a good dad but he was normal once
Yes he is lol
He's as wrong as wrong gets
I have to disagree. I think Green Goblin is far more crazy. But hey, Mysterio is a nutbag too, for sure.
@@jcaseyjones2829 Yee Goblin was definitely more flat-out insane as they come. I guess it's a question of how Dafoe Osborn is still of that "Good Guy driven to madness by experiment-gone-wrong" style of villain, whereas Beck is "narcissistic psychopath" basically from the start. It takes a bit to push him over the edge, but he certainly was unstable from the get-go, sort of a more dramatic Lou Bloom from Nightcrawler.
I'm still waiting on the episode,
*"Why Ryan Arey Was Right!"*
it's the most anticipated episode ever.
I'm reminded of two quotes, both of which are from Falcon and The Winter Soldier and relevant to Ryan's excellent video analysis...
*"The world's broken. Everybody's just looking for someone who can fix it."* - James Rhodes (War Machine)
*"The danger with America's super soldiers is that we put them on pedestals. They become symbols, icons, and then we start to forget about their flaws. From there cities fly, innocent people die, movements are formed and wars are fought."* - Baron Helmut Zemo
This seems like it’s not just about Mysterio….
Funny how this came out before the whole covid fiasco
The best stories draw inspiration from the real world
Covid fiasco?
People don't want to be right; they want to be told they are right. Much as in days of yore when people claimed to be concerned about their Honor when in fact they were merely concerned about others' perception of their Honor.
Being wrong is a failure and is embarrassing, but living in denial rather than changing your views to the correct ones is even worse.
Yes. It's not about being right because they already think they are. What gets them high is validation.
Well you still can see that still nowadays…
13:33 "Turning the public on the Heroes, while supporting the villains." This statement actually holds more merit than most people believe. Mainly because of the fact that in rare instances, it was the heroes influence that drove the villains over the edge. To give them the motivation to expose the heroes for their actions, and prove that the heroes aren't as heroic as the masses view them as. And at the same time, make them seen as the heroic savior. This is the very thing that drives Mysterio to fool the masses into thinking that he's the greatest hero of all; discrediting Spider-Man, and taking the focus off of Tony Stark. The very person who drove Beck into becoming a supervillain.
I’d love to see the Thunderbolts sooner rather than later tbh
You will, the Marvel phases are moving quiet along if you follow the full chart
I swear if Screen Crush was a thing back when I was in high school, I would have freaking nailed my movie analysis papers.
And yeah, I love Doug the Dog. 😀
I absolutely love these insightful and philosophical analyses. There's so much into it. So many controversial and complicated issues can be analyzed under the optics of superhero movies.
Honestly, this shit is a hundred times more scary than Thanos or any villain.
Having supervillains in the world doesn’t scare me that much… knowing that my nieces and nephews have internet access absolutely scares the shit out of me when I see the kinds of bullshit being peddled every day. They’re smart and good kids but it’s hard to know what to believe…
A Dark Avengers movie or series like this would be uncomfortable and hard to watch.
"The Boys" is a very good example of a dark Avengers series
Mysterio was not just a man with a story, a visual, a ILLUSION. He was a man who worked hard his entire life and got thrown away like a piece of trash. He also shows that no matter how hard you work no one will acknowledge you for your work unless your rich, your famous and that’s why I love him so much
This is probably one of the best videos ever from ScreenCrush. Really really good. Excellent writing.
Thanks for the videos. I always love hearing your insights because you go beyond just theorizing or explaining a movie and actually delve into the inner workings of the movies, the hidden messages for real life. Your thoughts help reveal the movies’ representations for life and they become more than just fascinating stories.
Is Mysterio still alive?
No
Yesn't

At this point according to these guys every villain was right
From a certain point of view.
@@Lance37a no, none of them were right.
Villains have to be right to a certain degree
@@blaze6477 maybe not right their goals, and certainly not in their methods, but often in their perceptions of others and the world. Generally they're right about something and they take advantage of it for their own benefit.
@@dipperdandy yeah but he is generalising it like they were right in all areas.
One thing I always wondered, what was Beck’s endgame. Sure he wanted to be “the next Iron Man” Let’s say his plan works. What did he plan to do when a real threat came along? Expect other heroes to deal with it and take the credit? All his stuff was special effects. Even with Edith that’s not guarantee of victory. Idk, maybe he just didn’t think that far ahead. Or try his get his hands on more of Stark’s tech to improve his abilities? II wouldn’t call this a plot hole or anything, just something I always wondered.
I think his plan from the beginning was to have a "great sacrifice" maybe not a death but pretend to suffer a dehabilitating injury during a fight and bask in the glory and praise of his sacrifice for the rest of his life
Such people exist , ultimately all evil is simply stupid and no one gets away with it.
He was just that stupidly evil, they make it clear he is mentally unstable
Some guy on UA-cam made a video saying that FFH should’ve had a different prize. Instead of the glasses, Mysterio should’ve gotten his hands on and Ironman suit variant he could’ve modified. Then he do some real damage.
@@discolullaby5777 that would make more sense honestly. Id imagine Edith could give him access to more of starks tech.

Nicely done. I see what you are really getting at. Well played
I honestly have no words.
Everything that was stated here were things that I didn't even take into consideration.
This thing is hella deep, but quite informative at the same time.
Thank you Ryan, great video as always
Mysterio was insightful and used that to manipulate people, and was therefore “right” as in “perceptive”, but he was never IN the right.
Brilliant analysis, as always. They’ve sown some great seeds for Thunderbolts.
And I think mutants. After thunderbolts and secret invasion public trust will be low and that'll breed mutant hate and hate for heros
Marketing himself as a hero was definitely brilliant; they can get away with practically anything in the MCU. The Sokovia Accords may as well not exist, pardons are handed out like tic-tacs, Stark Industries and The Black Panther own monopolies on all of the best tech and only share with their friends, and their celebrity status places them above reproach. I hope that the Thunderbolts addresses the grievances of the 'villains' and treats them like real, complex people, rather than being self-deprecating and apologetic, like the Loki series was. I also hope that the Thunderbolts include Agatha Harkness; She's a 'good guy' in the comics and, in my opinion, did nothing wrong in WandaVision. It was Wanda herself who abducted and psychologically tortured the residents of WestView and, if her grief renders her actions excusable, why not Zemo's? The Avengers built (and lost control of) a genocidal android, killed Zemo's entire family and dissolved his country fighting it, and didn't even stick around to help pull survivors out of the wreckage they'd caused. The Vulture would not have been a criminal at all if Stark hadn't lobbied to force his company out of the disaster relief market so that Stark Industries would have exclusive access to alien tech. Perhaps the next generation of Avengers will adopt Spiderman's motto: "With great power comes great responsibility." and address the downsides of a select group of individuals holding so much power with so little oversight and virtually no consequences.
I see what you did here… well done sir 👏🏽👏🏽. The parallels are definitely there

its really annoying how people try to downgrade his value as a spider-man villain just because he worked for tony once. the writing gives us this level of symbolism and subtlety and this is the problem for us?

Very good video. Gets us ready for how to approach No Way Home.
This is a perfect argument/theme/setup for Booster Gold.
I feel like everyone forgets that this movie arc of Mysterio tricking the world into thinking Spider-Man is a murderer and a villian is a video game arc from long ago where Mysterio did exactly the same thing in that game to Spider-Man and then some.
Great Video, very informative and I felt that it also really related to the real world. We are living in an age of misinformation and distrust.
The theme of this essay was also part of the plot of 1976's _Network_ - you know the movie where Peter Finch's character shouts on-air "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it any more!"
So true! Preach it brother 🙌
I think this could lead to more mutants coming out trying to be super heroes and then the government stepping in with Anti Mutant regulation...... then X-MEN!!

Technically, Mysterio tricked an alien pretending to be Fury.
Just like how Thanos won in infinity war, Mysterio one in far from home and thanks to him Peter has to live with the world knowing his identity, like how the avengers had to live for 5 years with their mistake, and now like the avengers, Peter wants to undo it, but has to face the consequences of the multiverse villains and the deaths I no way home, everything comes back to Mysterio revealing his identity, everything that happens in no way home really is mysterious fault, everything comes from him
