  • "Enlightenment" is one of those terms that comes up frequently, if not continuously, in spiritual and Buddhist circles -- as in purportedly being the whole point of why people explore paths of transformation. However, what is actually meant by enlightenment is usually left undefined. #Buddhism #enlightenment
    Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo shares thoughts on the subject of enlightenment. She is one of the Western pioneers of Tibetan Buddhism.

    ====================
    As a young woman in England, Tenzin Palmo was a member of the Buddhist Society and met the first Tibetan lamas who came to the West. She would move to India to explore the dharma, becoming secretary to Freda Bedi at the Young Lama Home School before taking nun ordination, then later doing 12 years of solitary retreat. Freda Bedi's (remarkable) life story is told in amzn.to/3CD8Z1f
    Tenzin Palmo’s inspiring life story is told in her biography,
    Cave in the Snow: A Woman’s Quest for Enlightenment amzn.to/3q1thOm
    Reflections of a Mountain Lake is a collection of teachings from Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo.

      Thanks for your considerate comment. It's nice to hear that these videos are of interest to people. The original project - back in the days of DVDs - was going to be to create a visual encyclopedia about various aspects of Buddhism. Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche offered the counsel to interview members of all four Tibetan Buddhist lineages, both elders born and trained in Tibet as well as the younger lamas who grew up outside of Tibet, and also elder Westerners. Pursued that course of action for several years then life got kind of complicated so it's only been of late that we've been chipping away at posting the excerpts from the various interviews.

    This is a very different reality from news coverage of Palmo earlier. The general message there was that she was in the cave until she reached enlightenment. I like this interview and I think it provides greater confidence for Maslow's self actualisation.

      Yes, enlightenment or bust is an easier story to sell. Tenzin Palmo, in another clip I think, expressed some embarrassment over the Korean publisher giving A Cave in the Snow a title like I Vow to Get Enlightened as a Woman.

    I believe the Latin American teacher to which Jetsunma refers is Claudio Naranjo. One can find interviews and videos of him discussing the experience. He’s very special. As an aside, he is largely responsible for developing and propagating the Enneagram of Personality as we know it. He’s the direct teacher of Helen Palmer and most other authors of her generation. I believe he as an MD psychiatrist as well (?)

    Thank you so much dear Lama ! What a great surprise! You worked out my doubts about the compelling need of attaining enlightenment or not... Such a master you are, being so honest and humble as to say you won't reach it anyway!!! I've never heard a monk or man lama to acknowledge that. I really really really look up on you...you're my inspiration , role model and best guide in the spiritual path, i.e. of course after our Holiness the 14th.Dalai Lama... THANK YOU FOR YOUR TEACHING AND FOR HELPING WOMEN TO WAKE UP AND ASK THE WORLD TO RESPECT THE RIGHTS in all walks of life

    The Latin teacher to whom Jetsunma refers is Claudio Naranjo. He describes the rise and fall of his awareness in various interviews that are worth hearing. He’s also, btw, the main formulator and propagater of the Enneagram of Personality in its current form.

    Very Important interview material for the seekers. True enlightened person is rarer than one in billions and normally may had been living as a next door neighbour and gone but not recognised by the life time seekers because there are many shopkeepers to go through for them.

    She did not really reach up to the point of actual truth (realization). Yes, she is very factual and to the point but I still get vibe that she need’s little more to know about Dharma. She need to learn vimalakriti sutra (the ultimate truth)
