Not a leatherworker but used the first and third pattern/tutorial to make faux leather pouches for a Halloween costume held together with painted push pins and embroidery string - VERY happy with the way they turned out considering I didn't use a single listed material or tool. Beautiful designs!

I love that last pouch - it's just been added to my (rapidly-growing, never-ending) list of projects that I want to make. How well does the semi-veg tan hold its shape? What about water-proofing? Ideally, I'd probably make 2 for when I'm back doing archery (when I'm not in lockdown anymore) to hold all the bits an pieces I need on the range, and my phone/keys/money/etc, so they'd be out in all of the glorious weather systems that Melbourne, Australia has to throw my way on any given day...
Anyway, yet another great project, and an informative tutorial.

Hi, too broke to start yet - a quick question about leather types... Can you tool/emboss semi-veg-tan leather. This leather seems best suited to most projects, and as I live in Ireland where it rains often... But I'd like to tool some items.

Thank you for this. I love these pouch styles! I bought the 3-pack recently and really want to try to combine features of all 3 into one pouch. I want to make pouch #1 but make it not quite as tall and to have a longer tongue that tucks under the vial holder (so height and tongue similar to pouch #2 but I like the sam brown button placement on pouch 1). I'd also like to have the shape of the lid be more like pouch #3 so it covers more.
I'm guessing that vegetan leather can be used instead of chrometan?
Do you have a direct link to the kits? I couldn't seem to find the one with the little vials. The size of the vials would at least be helpful if they are no longer available so i can order the right size ones. I'm considering getting some that look like they are filled already.
I want to be Batman! LOL.
After watching the full video, I really like the shape of the last pouch. It looks like it would be simple to add the vial holder on the front and modify the strap to fit. I think I'd want to have the stitching on the bottom front moved to the back so that would need to be re-shaped. I could probably print out the pattern (once I get a working printer again) and see if If I can tape stuff together and make the modifications that way.
My ultimate goal is to find one of the hats from your patterns (maybe a shorter version of a top hat) and add pouches to it. I want at least 2 on each side of a center buckle. FantasyFuzion on Etsy made some Steampunk hats with pouches on them that are neat, but she sells the actual premade hats and not the patterns. I want to make a hat and different pouches than what she uses. The little vial holders will be a bonus. It may sound silly, but I'm trying to design a full costume that I call Loot Hoarder that has a bunch of pockets and pouches.

@@yayaglass I'd certainly appreciate it. I know Horween has different lines of leather, including ChromeXL, but it's been hard for me to figure out which are latigo type or combination tanned. OA Leather Supply out of Alberta, Canada has some latigo/combination tanned leathers, but imho, the shipping costs are a bit of a no go for me. Cheers!

Thanks for another great tutorial and unique design. It looks like you are punching the stitching holes at a bit of an angle, holding the punch upright to find and center on the pattern, but then angling when you strike. Is this just a camera angle or do you actually tilt the tool a bit in contrast to straight up and down?

    • @DieselpunkRo
      @DieselpunkRo  4 роки тому +1

I try and punch them straight, if i can, sometimes i have to tilt so the viewing angle is better

One little thing that I'd like an answer to:
I followed the link for the half-round cutter punches, thinking, "wow, I can get these essential tools cheap!".
One of the most important things I've learned to do when shopping online, is to check out the negative reviews. The positive reviews are unlikely to tell you anything useful, especially about possible problems. You do need to know how to tell reviews from idiots apart from trustworthy ones, though. Anyway, this time there were a lot of one star reviews for these punches. Sure, many were written by idiots, but the ones written by intelligent, educated people agreed precisely with the idiots.
There are serious issues with the punches sold on that page. Complaints? Well...dirty, crudely made, uneven, dull, bending easily, etc. On the other hand, overall, they have four stars. How is this explainable? Clearly, the quality control is seriously lacking. Many sets appear to have problems...but many sets are good enough to get the good reviews.
So, what I'd like to know is, *where do I look for sets that are a little less iffy?*
I don't believe in buying cheap tools that will fail me. Most of the tools I've bought over the last forty+ years are still with me, and still as good as the day I bought them.
I've only been subbed to this channel a few days, and everything I've seen and heard so far has been top notch...until I ran across this issue. Perhaps the quality of the tools in the link has gone, perhaps Tony just got lucky...or is it that these aren't the actual tools used in the videos? I think it would be good for viewers to be able to buy with confidence...confidence that isn't misplaced.
** I just took a look at another brand on Amazon. I seems that Amazon has once again failed customers in a very bad way. The exact same reviews appear on this other brand's page, rendering the reviews completely and utterly meaningless. Sorry, Tony, perhaps the link really does lead to an excellent product. Thanks to Amazon screwing the pooch, all a customer can do in a case like this is to buy, try, and hope to hell it isn't a mistake. I've been finding more and more of this sort of stupidity on Amazon recently. This week, I ended up having to get Amazon to cancel a third party purchase, so I could go forward with buying what I needed from a different source. It makes me want to scream (I won't, though, it would upset my wife too much...heh).
