I used this line regularly in the late 60's early 70's when living in Basildon. This was before it's dedicated station. If going to London we'd walk to Laindon and if Southend then Pitsea. The stock was old class 302 and 307 units. Most had no corridor just the individual compartments. They were very noisy and rattled a lot. I used to bemoan that Fenchurch Street had no tube connection but it never occurred to me to get off at Upminster or Barking and join the district line there.
What a fantastic video. Many years ago during the summer I would catch the train from Barking and visit Southend seaside for the day with mum and dad. They were great times. It's wonderful to see the full route and listen to your commentary. Thank you so much for doing this.
Well done - an excellent video with pleasing mix of cab-view and lineside and a very well-researched, appropriate and well-spoken commentary. Having used this line for 60 years this year, it's so enjoyable to see the driver's eye view for a change.
I’ve never known a more beautiful EMU than the Electrostar class. Looks beautiful and the graceful yet powerful motor sound has no equal. This was the true successor to my childhood fave the Networker class of EMU/DMU. The new Seimens trains have no soul and don’t look great imo. Long live the Electorstar 🙌🏾
Hey Paul, thank you for filming and uploading this railway cab view video. I would also like to see the railway line from Shenfield via Wickford, Rayleigh and Rochford to Southend Victoria filmed. As well as Colchester via Thorpe-le-Soken to both Clacton and Walton-on-the-Naze. Many thanks in advance!
Brilliant video! Brings back happy memories of finishing duty at Upminster and hitching a ride back into Central London on C2C! Very well put together and very informative.
Thanks for this. It brought back a lot of memories from about 50-60 years ago. Looking forward to part 2 which I presume will take in Stanford-le-Hope, Tilbury and Grays, which is the section where I spent my childhood years.
I knew this was going to be good when you said "Shoeburyness" and got it right. Great to see Joan Sims is commemorated at Laindon - I was waiting to be disappointed, but you mentioned her! This is a route I've long wanted to see from the driver's point of view. Thank you.
Thank you for this, very interesting commentary and high quality video. I traveled on this line quite often back in the sixties, so it brings back memories. The trains look so different now.
Excellent video and commentary highlighting the local sights and history of the Eastbound line out of London. I especially like the shots of the train and the station details, which are usually omitted from cab-rides. One of the best ways to view travel out of London from my armchair in Southern California.
Amazing video. I am a driver on this route I have really old videos unlisted with the bridge, level crossing names and speed changes for all these routes. I give the link to those trying to learn the route but again they are old.
Lots of memories of being on the school coach passing though West Horndon via the bridge at St Mary’s Lane from Brentwood to Upminster (1962 - 1972), believed that British Railways were running steam train around 1962, and may have seen them in service.
Enjoying from Vancouver. In 1990 I got a 2 week BritRail pass (1st class) & travelled all over UK. I even went to Tilbury Dockside by train to board the Royal Princess (the one dedicated by Princess Diana). Cheers
I love this video because, when I was 6, we moved from Dagenham to Cranham, where the District Line train sidings are, and our house is next to the line. I remember the incredible noise of the steam engines followed by the almost quiet carriages, followed by the clanging of the home signal as it bounced in its post, to danger. The signal box which controlled it was near Frank's Woods, about two hundred yards from my house. I still live there but the modern stock is much quieter and you can't see it through the trees that have grown since then. I tried to see my house, not far from Front Lane Bridge, the first one after Upmister Station, but again, the trees are too dense.
Lots of memories for me in tbis video. I grew up in Benfleet and my favorite stretch of the railway was going past Hadleigh Park and the castle and then by the river between Leigh and Chalkwell. A view I never got tired of. That little church by the railway was another favorite spot I used to walk to by the railway line between Benfleet and Pitsea.
My great-grandfather was a signalman on this line with a sideline in cobbling shoes. I'll admit I jumped forward to Leigh-on-Sea, Westcliff and Southend Central, where all my mum's people come from.
I Lived in Laindon from 1970 to 2012 and travelled the line daily from 1979 onwards , lots of changes as I remember when they were building Basildon Station among others, and the Sidings at Laindon were a coal depot with railway sidings. Fenchurch Street was also very different , with a WHS Kiosk on th platform and the old station Cafe , there were 2 exits out of the front of the nation too
That looks great I think it's better than the Video 125 C2C drivers eye view because I show the whole network and video 125 miss out the line via Baslidon but this is good keep up the whole work and future cab rides.
Good video! A small criticism I have is that I believe we lose sections of the cab ride when the footage changes to local landmarks for example at 44:26 . It would be better if after showing the other footages the cab ride restarted from exactly where it left off. Yes its rather pedantic but just a small criticism. Thanks!
It's difficult for the video producer to please everyone, and I think he got it right with the balance between cab views and other interesting views and local information. As a result I've subscribed to this channel. There are lots of other pure cabview videos out there, but I like having the extra information.
Ah the memories of when this was called the LTS line run by network southeast. Used to have days out in London from chalkwell on a one day travel card. Used to love the old slam door trains
There was another fatal train crash in 1965 just after the Dagenham East station. A train was derailed at the River Beam crossing, at which point there was a noticeable “kink” in the line, eventually stopping on its side behind the houses in St Andrews Avenue, Elm Park. The enquiry however decided that there was an obstruction on the line that caused a derailment….a conclusion some found hard to accept as the driver was one of those killed in the crash as well as the fact the line was straightened the following year.
They have mulled many times to put the connection back in at Upminster but it would mean having to actually signal the branch if they wanted to run trains around on it, one idea based on the Fife circle seems attractive at times of demand running a kind of circle between Stratford, Romford, Upminster and back up but it all hangs up on the Rom-Up being a "closed" single train running working and its just too much bother to change all that lol
Was that the old Haydon branch just before Leman St? Or was that the Commercial Rd branch I wonder, I remember as a kiddie going into Fenchurch St with me mum I saw a loco on one of the branches coming out light but its like 50 years ago so not sure what it was.
c2c have got some of their new rolling stocks being delivered and are to do test runs before they enter service sometime this year. 12 5-Car Class 720/6 Aventra units that are replacing the Class 387/3 but will not replace the 74 Class 357 units that c2c should start refurbishing those units. As the Class 357 came into service in late 1999/early 2000.
At about 15:58 you have a caption "River Rodding" which should be "River Roding". The Roding runs from Molehill Green near Stansted and enters the Thames at Barking Creek.
Fenchurch Street is the only London terminus station that doesn't actually have a London prefix to it's station name. I've always wondered why this is. Does anyone know the answer to this?
I hope they NEVER consider using AnsaldoBreya to replace these BREL ElectroStars. They are terrible as a train builder. I can't believe Trafford House is still standing.

What an amazing amount of research must have gone into this video, with so much information. Thank you
Brilliant ride and commentary, thank you to all involved.
Fantastic video and being local to this line I really enjoyed it well done
Fantastic ride and history lesson. Great work, Paul, thank you.
I enjoyed reliving the journey with this well made video. Thank you 🙏
Thank you for the enjoyable journey and interesting narrative. Regards from 12,000 miles away!
So good to hear the history during the ride

Great work Paul, the work you put into these productions is fantastic. Looking forward to Pt II 🚂😊👍
Excellent in every respect. Took a bit of work. Very enjoyable.

Great work as always love the history and cant wait for part 2
Another fantastic production Paul, looking forward to part 2
Great to see some cab ride content that doesn't involve the mainstream (ecml/mml/wcml etc) routes everyone else seems to film. Great work Paul

Great video, Paul. I've been suitably inspired to undertake the self-same journey in the coming week. Keep 'em coming. Stay safe.

Is it really that noisy in the cab or is there a sound issue?

Eastern Counties Railway and London, Tilbury and Southend Railway - Fenchurch Street railway station, also known as London Fenchurch Street
Maybe Fenchurch St is one of the smaller main line stations but it does feature on the original Monopoly Board. Thanks for excellent video.
Do you have a plan to show the branch line to Stanford-le-Hope?
I hadn’t got a train from Fenchurch Street for years so I put that right two weeks ago, a train to Shoeburyness .
Great video Paul. c2c have collected 6 720s and they will replace the 387s
12 actually. And are 5-Car.
@@Andrewjg_89 oh so is not 6 my apologies
Hadleigh Castle was also painted by John Constable.
For non-natives, you may need to explain the difference between the city of London as referred to at 26:35 and the actual City of London.
He said that the four rail systems is rated at 750v DC. I thought the four rail system was AC???
C2C
What does that mean 'C2C'? What kind for sure, the real name of the train, hmm??
Gostei do vídeo
How’d you get a cab ride?
How does FS sustain 4 platforms when it has only 1 route ?
Trains used to leave there every few minutes at peak times. Not sure if that's still the case.

Is all the imagery completely computer generated? All the footage looks so real and lifelike.

Too much crunchy sounds by the old Class 357 Electrostar!
Hopefully the dvr wasn't Darren Simms
Looks good, reminds me of one video uploaded by video125

The AnsaldoBreda name isn't around nowadays since Hitachi brought them in 2015. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitachi_Rail_Italy
The class 357's were manufactured by Adtranz not BREL
