Incredibly amazing. So anointed. May God continue to use her to bring more healing and hope throughout the world. One of a kind. A music masterpiece that will continue to sustain from generation to generation. 🎉✍️🙌😃🎺🎶🎶🎶📜
I've always loved this song since the day it came out back in '63. It's a Bacharach classic and I think it's very important that Salvant covered it. Great job.
Absolutely love this rendition ... didn't think anyone could top Dionne's version. Exceptionally Rare GIft!!! Thank you Lord for this amazing talent!!!!
I bought this album just 2 weeks back. I was looking to try something new - I always am. So I had never hear of her, but I must say her lyricism really stands out. She appears very enchantingly playful and masterfully devious with how the beauty of her lyrics completely catch by surprise, e.g when she says in Fog "who knew I'd miss the mess". Everything just felt right with this album. I'm definitely going to look out for her material more. And she's still pretty "young" - a year below me - so I expect more projects from her.
I'm sorry, But the quality of society would be so much better if the mainstream music sounded like this! Straight classy. Been lovin this since I first heard her version in 2015.
A friend sent me this video...LOVE LOVE LOVE the Words, her voice is amazing, she is beautiful! The whole composition is Beautiful, I love this video also. I am a FAN!!! Beautiful!
Really refreshing and hypertalented artist. She brings sparkles in jazz today. The only thing I'm thinking about is wether, with all her qualities, she'll manage to build her proper style, even though she can sing anything...
I'm on my grandmother's youtube accoand this is what she makes it is the best I can't believe she has Three thousand locks on this video I will always subscribe
#GrammyWinner #JazzVocals
Hey! Little Girl Comb your hair, fix your makeup Soon he will open the door Don't think because there's a ring on your finger You needn't try anymore For wives should always be lovers too Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you I'm warning you Day after day There are girls at the office And men will always be men Don't send him off with your hair still in curlers You may not see him again For wives should always be lovers too Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you He's almost here Hey! Little girl Better wear something pretty Something you'd wear to go to the city and Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music Time to get ready for love Time to get ready Time to get ready for love
Love her. She frequently says in interviews that she deliberately picks songs that are not "pc." Songs that may be sexist. Like this one. Or racist. Like "You Bring Out The Savage In Me."
Just Google 'Wives and Lovers' Sheet Music. This is a pretty famous and heavily recorded song by Burt Bacharach and Hal David in 1963 (originally created for the movie, 'Wives and Lovers') and sung by Dionne Warwick. Since then, I long list of performers have covered it ... just some of the other notable recorded versions include Jack Jones (won a Grammy for it in '64), Frank Sinatra & Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald & Duke Ellington, Lena Horne, Nancy Wilson, Stan Getz, Billy Eckstine, Burt Bacharach and the latest recorded version being this one by Céline (just to name a few versions). Look up the sheet music and also look up the history and meaning of the song and the other versions (especially the ones I mentioned). Hope this helps you find what you're looking for.
Cecile McLorin Salvant on Wives and Lovers: "That particular song I found actually because I was looking up sexist songs. I have a really good friend who knows I'm a feminist, [and] she's like, 'Why aren't you singing more feminist songs?' And I thought, 'Gee, that's true.' So I started trying to do some research, trying to find some songs in the American popular song history, even folk songs or whatever it may be, that had feminist themes to them, and it was very hard. It was very difficult to find. So I decided, 'Let me just check out if there are any sexist songs,' and of course that was a lot easier. And that song happens to be so catchy, and I love that song, and I think it's hilarious."
Indeed Sarah! The melody is simply brilliant - very Baccarah. We just need to look past the lyrics: "Don't stand him up, with your hair still in curlers, you may not see him again". Ugh!
The contest about the most sexist lyrics has too many contestants and compared to songs encouraging violence and even assassination I guess this one has no chance to get the price.
As for our self declared male feminist, critical discourse analysis is an important contribution to feminist struggle. In order to change how reality is, it's very important to analyze how reality was and which values and role models were transmitted by cultural artifacts. There us no contradiction between criticizing sexist discourse, past or present, and creating new artworks more according to egalitarian values. We can do both and we don't need you to tell us what we are supposed to do or not.
And people say they don't make good music anymore. It's not that. The problems are today's commercial radio is garbage and the art's program's are virtually none existent in public schools today. Music irregardless of genre has been dumb down to the point that much of today's main stream music is boorish.
Take a sexist 60s song, made classic by one of the best singers ever (Dionne), and sing it today in the #metoo age with the most different arrangement possible. Short of exploding on stage, not much more can go worse.
THIS is the NEW voice you need to HEAR.
Incredibly amazing. So anointed. May God continue to use her to bring more healing and hope throughout the world. One of a kind. A music masterpiece that will continue to sustain from generation to generation. 🎉✍️🙌😃🎺🎶🎶🎶📜

Hey! Little Girl
Comb your hair, fix your makeup
Soon he will open the door
Don't think because there's a ring on your finger
You needn't try anymore
For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
I'm warning you
Day after day
There are girls at the office
And men will always be men
Don't send him off with your hair still in curlers
You may not see him again
For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
He's almost here

I'd rather live in a PC world than have to hear racist/sexist shit!
Yup, a nice voice does not make you any smarter...

Good
effervescent, acrobatic vocal expertise. like champagne..
Beautifully put
Wow! Just discovered this song & CMS! An older white guy at work told me to check her out. Go figure!
I HATE this song but she KILLS it here.
Another Ella Fitzgerald !!! 👏
Hay tantas versiones de esta canción, que ésta me parece un poco burda, buena voz, pero poco cambios de acordes
This is great vocalisation, but Hal David's lyrics have to be the most sexist ever written

@MattyBoy1964 it's important to critique the past, I don't understand why that makes you so mad

I'm on my Grandma's account.
0:30 Don't think cuz theres a ring on your finger....mmmm mmmm m. *message*
Ouch
Am i the only 16yo here?
Take a sexist 60s song, made classic by one of the best singers ever (Dionne), and sing it today in the #metoo age with the most different arrangement possible.
Short of exploding on stage, not much more can go worse.
She made a dreadful (and sexist) 1960s song into satire. I couldn't keep a straight face while listening to it.
Adrian DeVore how can you tell it's satire?
She really did. I agree. Her stunning voice was dripping with it.
Its a great song. 'Sexist' is your own issue.
Performing Wives and Lovers in 2015 is its own satire, especially if you consider the feminist singing it.
No, she didn't. Not satire at all. Why would you say that? How is it so?
I like classical versions more. This is too individualistic for my taste.
