I thought it worked well for this vdieo as it was more demonstration oriented - bringing together a lot of things you've done in previous videos. I think it would work less well for a tutorial style video.

Hi Byron , could you give some advice please.
A few months ago I was looking for a new brush set as my series 7s were on the way out, so I looked into Artis Opus.
I decided I'd buy just a series S No1 and soap first to see if I get on with the brushes, then the S set and later the M.
When I got the brush it looked beautiful, felt really nice to hold , so quickly gave it a test. I dipped it in water , put a small amount of paint on the brush from my wet pallet and went to apply the paint. Before the brush got to the mini the hair split in two so I washed the paint out , put it into a point and retried but had same issues. I ended up cleaning the brush in the soap and giving it another go the next day with same consequences but now it splayed into several sections. Iv never had this happen with any kolinsky brushes untill they're warn out and feel like the brush didn't even give me a chance to see if I get on with it.
Iv resorted to using the brush mainly to mix paint on my pallet ,which makes me so sad.
Iv been thinking of buying another series S no 1 to give it another go and wanted to know what it was I did wrong .
      Thanks
      John.

Thank you so much. Theres so much "draw the rest of the owl" in mini painting content, creators never showing off their mistakes, skipping most of the process and just slapping "blend/edge highlight" in videos labeled as easy or beginner friendly.
Beginners need to see that mistakes happen at every level of skill or theyre gonna get discouraged when they fail to reach the perfection that everyone presents

I like the format although I would enjoy it more I think with some dialog. Maybe things such as insight into what you might have been thinking with your choice of direction. While I find your videos VERY useful I really would like to understand your thought process on your decisions.

Relative noob, so I always enjoy instructional vids, but since I have hearing aids, the music versus discussion is highly appreciated. Also, the text descriptions are very helpful. In the future if you change paints, please include a small description of the paint and brush used. Duncan Rhodes does this well, but with his rapid fire discussion, I find it hard to concentrate on the actual painting skill versus listening (or trying to listen lol). I use Artis Opus brushes and am glad they continue to support my patronage with these excellent videos. My heartfelt compliments.

Love your work AO, you guys are great. I'm still very new to the hobby, but the way you emphasize your decisions and work through your mistakes is incredibly encouraging. Every technique in your toolbox feels like one I can pick up if I put in the time, and your results are always phenomenal to see. I think these text-only videos are a good 'intermediate' offering, while your more tutorialized videos definitely benefit more from the direct voice over and 'classroom' like effect of you narrating your way through what you're doing.
I think that while 'ye olde' captions might be a liiiittle bit jarring with your more synthy/meditative tunes, there's definitely a place 'between beats' in your videos where you can give the viewer a chance to take a breath (if they're watching) or to look up because the sound suddenly cut off, to get an idea of whether the thing you're doing next is something they want to focus-in on (if they're co-painting?) but that.... isn't necessarily how the anatomy of a project goes? So much of the appeal of what you do with these time-lapsed videos is the constant flow of layer upon layer, progress constantly being made, so I guess it might be a narrow line to thread the needle.
In any case I'm subscribed and watching, your work is great and the support you are providing us is incredible! Thanks for all you do!

I’ve been trying to follow along with your techniques for a few of my recent models, to various levels of success….
But I do have a request/suggestion; I primarily paint my minis for DnD/ board games, so all my models come pre-assembled (maybe 1 piece off if it’s a larger model)…. Could you demonstrate how you’d incorporate your drybrush techniques (or really any techniques that aren’t “shove your brush in and hope it comes out) on a model that you cannot get clear access to some of the undersides? (In particular, I’m currently working on a demon with his wings wrapped around his body, but far enough that you can see, but not get in to control)

I do like seeing painters mix the paint and actually apply it - so the "fast forwardy" sections were interesting. I think the format might work - but it could have done with being 10 mins shorter and the point where the painting went off the rails for you made a bit clearer. Even after watching it i wasn't 100% sure. Even at its "worst" it was still better than what i can achieve!

I really enjoyed this video. It isn't often that a content creator takes us through the "mistakes" part of their miniature journey, which I found very helpful and encouraging. Do you re-prime or re-blacken your texture palette before each new project? Would appreciate more of these kinds of videos in future if they aren't too difficult or time consuming to produce.

I really like the finished miniature! I don't know if the cloak was per se too dark, it could have been a less highlighted part of the model (serving as a frame for the parts you'd want to capture the viewer's attention more - e.g. the face, or the shield). Also, I relate to the gardening phase, having recently spent way too long on my Ionus' base try to balance out small tufts, big tufts, bright blossoms, dark grass, skulls, etc... I do have a question though: how long did it take you to finish the painting on this mini?

Really liked the format of this video, not to say I take issue with your regular narrating so I wouldn't have you switching over completely :)
How is this for a suggestion though? I feel like painting eyes in miniature painting is far from solved science. In traditional art you would rarely go beyond a shadow cast from the browline in the eye region unless you are doing a portrait or otherwise have a close-up of a person in your composition. Considering the scale we are working at with these miniatures, I don't feel like it warrants clearly defined eye whites and pupils. I don't have any clear answers myself, I don't think a pool of nuln oil in the eye socket of a character would do for something like this but the white dot with a smaller black dot has never sat right with me either. Maybe some sort of exploration could be done to figure out an efficient way of tackling this, but I feel like I am rambling as I have been thinking about this alot lately.

Something I've been pondering recently. I hadn't done much painting for about 9 months (no interesting reasons) and was a struggling a bit with being satisfied with what I was painting. Some of it is objectively mistakes - lots of dex fails before my hands remembered how to paint. A lot of it is just not quite hitting a standard I was expecting/hoping. However, the next day, or a couple of days later, I'm much happier with what I've done. Partly that's trusting a process, which is a huge part of mini painting and partly because one (or at least I) stops judging something by its failures, but rather by its successes.
When painting, I think its natural to be drawn to what goes wrong during the process, but when finished, unless being criitically judged, it is instead measured by its overally finish. Other people don't care if its the slighly wrong shade of blue or if that dusty weathering was really intended to look damp.
Also, a mistake makes something sound binary, when most of painting is more analog.
What I'm really trying to say is, the old quote "an artist has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but nothing left to take away," attributed to Antoine de Saint-Exupery, is wrong because they hadn't yet invented glue on tufts.

Honestly, I’m not a fan of this format. I tend to engage your videos whilst doing something else, so with the lack of verbal cues I’m missing many relevant steps. The miniature was well painted as always, and I picked up some valuable reminders about hiding mistakes with shades paints, however a lot of the time I was just hearing the ambient music and forgetting to watch for the written prompts.
Maybe you could record a separate commentary track after the edit, just to say what you had in the text, it doesn’t need to be conversational.
In terms of the mini, loved the texture on the cloak and the look of the shield.

The content is just fine, but actual running commentary feels "needed". Both in the way that you can explain stuff more when it is happening/ehy you do specific stuff. And it makes it a lot better as a video to have running in the background while doing something else. It now requires full attention, instead of listening along a potentially putting a piece that peaked the interest enough to give full attention.

Nothing to do with the paintjob but more with the sculpt. Am i the only one that thinks this general dude looks like they took a random hobo of the streets and put him in fancy armor?
Seriously, what's wrong with his hair?

I like that though. People who are well off don't join the "you are likely gonna die in battle but we'll give you warm food and clothes until then".

It was a useful video, but I really think it's lacking without your voice over. You've always got a lot of good stuff to say and it feels kind of lonely with no voice over.
