- Rusco 250 mesh (60 micron) spindown filter + 5 micron sediment filter + carbon block filter. These are 2.5" X 10" size filters. Sharkbite 3/4" male adapters.
There is an R/O system under the sink with:
1 micron sediment
carbon block
75 GPD Filmtec membrane
granular carbon
Watts remineralizer
UVC
This is really well presented, thank you.
I would think you can never be too safe if you or your family is drinking that. Thanks for all the filter names.
I always recommend putting in a manual bypass for any whole house filtration system. It may seem redundant or overkill, but there will never be a worry of going without water if one of the filter housings or bowels bust. Also, it just makes it so much easier to shut the system down to change out the filters.
Bypass could be a good idea in some cases but considering his water source (surface water, rain water, near roads), I wouldn't want to send any water from that source into the system unfiltered.
@@philipknight7180 Fair enough, that is something to consider. Some people have to change their filters once a month, because of the horrible water quality of silt, rust, and sediment. Not wanting that kind of water anywhere near the pipes and faucets is understandable.
Those water filters with the white top have a built-in bypass which is nice
@@LibertyDIY Both of mine have a bypass on the top, but I still put in a manual bypass with quarter turn valves as a backup incase if something breaks on one of the filter housings. Also, I turn on the manual bypass when filling on the swimming pool. It comes in handy.
Thank you. Very well explained.
GREAT VID THNX FOR THE INFO.
Good presentation....
Thank you for the video.
We get our water from a spring that emerges from under a Redwood tree trunk. Regrettably, it's exposed to the surface for about 70 feet before we can collect it at our property line.
We get a bit of turbidity in water along with colloidal iron (small particles) that are hard to filter.
My system is a bit more redundant as I use a 5 micron before the whole house UV. which we use for general purposes.
For our drinking water, I then send the UV'ed water through another 2-micron sediment filter to a chlorine retention tank then to an activated carbon filter before it gets to the R/O.
It's a bit complicated but I like the fact that there is little chance of potentail cooties (Bacteria and viruses) getting into my morning coffee.
Plus, The operation costs are far lower than my counterparts that have city water.
In town, it typically costs $100 a month.
ipwee i love self sustainable methods and i prefer the up front cost of diy vs the recurring cost of city systems. Good stuff!
Det
nice system
Overkill? More like AWESOME!
Agreed. I was looking for just such a genius set up - for my parents' place... old folks ought not to have to pack 50lb sacks of salt around - and the regulator on that old dino softener keeps breaking anyway!
@@aprilmoore2917 Filtration at any level only removes solids. Hard water is dissolved minerals that can only be removed with ion exchange (the ones needing salt) water softeners. Only other option for hard water is a scale inhibitor system
@@xiaopeiyu2137 thank you so much! I am most interested in making those golden years as easy and comfortable for my parents. I can still pack a 50lb bag of salt - but it's getting harder as near age 50...I need something more practical for my parents' home water system...
Hey I have a well pump in my casement, can I remove it without water leaks?
Well all I can say is well done lol
May I recommend you could install a gac(granular activated carbon) unit and after all these filters a UV for whole house not just R/O.. that carbon wrapped sediment filter wont take too many contaminates out versus a GAC
@@jonh8488 what?
Nice video. I had a well pump replacement twenty years ago and they installed the small spin filter with 100 mesh. The whole house filter got stopped up and pressure dropped so I replaced it. Soon the new filter was clogged. I went to a 140 mesh filter and that solved the problem. Now I seem to be having the problem again. How much pressure loss will the 250 filter cause? My pump is rated at 40-60.
I've been very surprised that I've noticed almost no pressure drop, even when am I neglect to clean the spin filter
Are water is 600 according to the reading zero pitcher water filter
wish i could figure out how to do this
Wow that’s your idea of clear water.
The filter housings are stained but yes the water runs nice and clear
I've heard RO systems will go bad much faster if you're water isn't softened. How hard is your water and what are your thoughts /experiences with that
That does make sense. I am using collected rain water now so no worries with calmag. I'll have to look into the water softener question
@@LibertyDIY - they say the scale build up on the RO diaphragm wears it out faster than normal
For your 5 water filters and UV light system
Where do you purchase those filters? I paid over $60. for 2 20" Carbon filter. When I open my faucets, some dirt comes out at the beginning. I have a whole house filter, and a spin down.
The 2.5" x 10" are very cheap on Ebay or Amazon. The 20" tends to carry a premium.
What model # Sharkbite's are those? Thanks!

Thank you! My Rusco has non-threaded 1 inch female. Looks like I may need a non threaded male 1 inch to 3/4 threaded female adapter glued on one side and then thread on the other to the Sharbite.
No problem, Yes you have it right
Can you install filters before the tank and switch or is that a bad idea
I would not recommend installing a filter before the pressure switch. I think it would be okay to install a strainer before the switch though. You could install a filter before the tank.
WATER TO CLEAN TO DRINK
That Watts filter ended up breaking on me. Off or bypass water kept pouring out the bottom.
You could disassemble the entire top section, maybe replace an O-ring in there? I have 2 of them. One has been working for years so far no problems. The other was damaged by freezing and it cracked the stainless steel threads there was nothing I could do to fix that
@@LibertyDIY Its toast. Probably me turning that valve w/o shutting off the water first caused it. I would turn it to off then shut off the water and turn on a sink to relieve pressure. I bought a three filter setup and one of those spin downs. Im going to plumb in a bypass path this time so I can shut off the water and bypass the filters. I probably wouldn't buy one of those watts again after this failure. It worked great for a few years
Where do you buy your filters so inexpensively?
Bought on ebay, this is an example of a good deal on 5 micron filters

Joe Suhrada you basically Do It Yourself and the filters aren't even expensive at all. 😂 very cheap if you have some experience
2-inch water sediment filter /4 whole house water filter 20"system /UV water filter system test it out
From what I see of your system you need more filters and a UV light.
what is mfg of manual hand pump. need to install for emergency water
I think it's a generic pump, about $60 on Amazon
Hi
I have installed 3 stage whole house water filter but the taste is terrible
Tried different filter but taste is not good.
If i install spindown filter would it improve the taste ?
My water has
Chloramine
Arsenic (low levels)
Lead (low levels)
Nickel (low levels)
I would recommend a separate drinking water system, reverse osmosis. That is the best way (and sometimes only way) to strip contaminants and improve flavor.
@@LibertyDIY yeah i have been used it for long time.
But takes lots of space mrs didnt want that but the taste is terrible on whole house system compare yo RO.
Not sure if spindown would help
I want to know more about that handpump!
filters installed bwtween t he tank and hot water?
@@Bigbacon The spin down filter and 5 micron filters are after the well tank but before the cold water feed for the whole house. I made sure the feed going to the spigot outside was not filtered though.
What filter can I use for iron?
Can't filter iron, you need a treatment system. Dust off your wallet or get used to the orange/brown stains.
@@TheOtherBill is this information up to date? I wonder because I see people filtering for pool water use. Thoughts on this?
@@elainenilsson5472 Depends on your manganese content and iron concentration. For pool water I don't see why it matters unless you have brown water. Always best to get a lab test.
damn bro that water looked bad in the spin down but decent in the carbon
The spindown is just kind of stained brown but it stays clean and clear for at least 12 months now
U need a in line uv light for your water
I agree it is shallow water. I dont drink or cook with this water, but I do have a UVB light inline with my reverse osmosis system.
@@LibertyDIY nice ! well done sir
With all the filtration including reverse osmosis and UV disinfection, what about fluoride? It's able to pass all them filters and its super toxic to the body.
Well water may not have alot but what about city water? fluoridated areas (70% of USA floridates drinking water sources)
My suggestion. You got open to the sun land. Place some solar distillers instead of filtration. It's way more natural process for the water to go true and it comes out cleaner and charged with sun energy! Good for drinking, cooking, bath, plants, animals.
Andrey D Proper Thankfully, reverse osmosis membrane will filter out 90+% of fluoride ions from tap water. You can tweak the system to filter even more if you prefer.
Andrey D We do use rain water for the reverse osmosis system, and well water as a backup when needed. I save all the rejected rain water and use it for gardening. I like the idea of solar distillery but we go through a surprising amount of water. I have about 125 gallon capacity in our rain barrels and that keeps us covered even through winter
Where are you getting those replacement filters for such a cheap price?
Ebay 👍
How are you getting pesticides in it?
Many homes and farms upstream from me.
Liberty DIY did you test and find them? If so, which ones did you find?
I never bothered to test it for pesticides/herbicides/fungicides because I wouldnt drink it without R/O filtering either way. The cost of extensive testing probably more than the R/O unit.
Liberty DIY pesticides includes herbicide, fungicides, and insecticides. You said there are farms upstream from you. Do you live by a creek, river, lake, or some other body of water?
Yes and rodenticides if we are being thorough. Fertilizers, pharmaceuticals and cleaning chemicals that are discharged into the water table via septic systems are also of concern to me. Our road is on a ridge and the water table slowly seeps out of many springs in the ravine downstream from us. Everything is ultimately heading toward the river. The water table on this ridge is only 10'-12' below the surface with a clay layer 16' deep. There are many homes and farms upstream of us. When I say upstream and downstream I am referring mostly to underground flow of the water table. I do not use any chemicals on my lawn or my foundation etc. by my neighbors do and the farms go crazy with synthesized chemicals I have no idea what they are using. I have no idea how persistent these chemicals are in the water table or if they have any synergistic effects in small quantities. Even if some government agency declared these chemicals were safe, I would not blindly trust that advice. So I invoke the precautionary principle and drink R/O water, preferably R/O rain water.
Fresh gutter water is better than activia for my gut.
I dont drink that water straight it gets filtered by reverse osmosis.
That said, for a truly healthy person I doubt drinking gutter water would be a problem. Unless you have Ebola fruit bats in your area maybe!
Filters get so dirty after a week, is because u buy them for 2 bucks a piece! Get the ones that are about 6 bucks a piece, works better
I use 5 micron sediment filters, just over $1 if you buy 50. They last about 6 months
Wow all that sediment in only one week move far away from there dude!!
I kicked up quite a mess putting down the new well points. It settled down after a few days. 5 micron filters last me 3-4 months.
