- During the total solar eclipse of 1919, British astrophysicist Sir Arthur Eddington conducted an experiment that would become legendary. He aimed to test Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, which suggested that gravity could bend light. Eddington measured the positions of stars near the eclipsed Sun and found that their apparent positions had shifted due to the Sun’s gravitational field, exactly as Einstein's theory predicted. This observation provided one of the first confirmations of general relativity, profoundly changing our understanding of gravity and the fabric of the universe.
