It's about Hillel, so it's spiritually connected to Feasting on The Flowers, Snow, This is the Place, Don't Forget Me, My Lovely Man, and Otherside, the last being sonically connected as well. I also pick up on some tonal inspiration from Coffee Shop from One Hot Minute in there.

    [Verse 1]
In my day I could hear them say
    Mr. K was awfully close
Now we take that bow you know
'Cause it's time to meet your ghost
    And I don't understand
    [Verse 2]
    Minotaurs and jaguars
    Are at my finger's tip
Falling up through the mustard gates
And I think I broke my hip
    And I don't understand
    I do not understand
    [Chorus]
Nine o'clock I turn my heels and sigh
    For one last time
    10: 30 I tied my chi
And died up on the vine
    [Verse 3]
Send me out to the pasture, love
With a closet full of whips
The coroner spins with his bag of grins
And he's sewing up my lips
    And I don't understand
    [Chorus]
Nine o'clock I turn my heels and sigh
    For one last time
    10: 30 I tied my chi
And died up on the vine
I died up on the vinе
    [Refrain]
    Suddenly when the momеnt comes
    And it's harmony or rage
Flowers cry on the corpse of love
And it's time to turn your page
    [Verse 4]
    Mr. and Mrs. Au Contraire
    I think they'll soon arrive
All the treasures you have saved
    Your children now divide
    And I don't understand
    I do not understand
    [Chorus]
Nine o'clock I turn my heels and-
    [Refrain]
    Suddenly when the moment comes
    And it's harmony or rage
Flowers cry on the corpse of love
And it's time to turn your page
    [Outro]
I am somewhere else my love and I think you'll know just where to find me
Out in an interstellar place and there's nothing left here to define me
You are somewhere else good love and this life of crime that's all behind me
We are all just space and love and I think you'll know that's who designed me, yeah!

I like how they are using more complex/weird chord progressions, this is definitely a more experimental album than UL, it seems that UL was supposed to display the more popish / comercial songs to get attention from the radios, while this album is way different

For the most part of the song there are unusual, dissonant chord changes, and then, in the end, everything resolves to catchy, californication-like progression. It's incredible. Feels like a huge relief after enormous tension.

Exactly. The outro is acceptance I think. Like the song is about mortality and probably about losing his father. It’s dark and twisted and unresolved. And then boom! It’s acceptance and deep understanding. It might be their best song since Wet Sand. I love so much of their stuff and have been a fan since the 80s but this and wet sand to me are on a completely separate level from everything else.

Many artists who are heavily dedicated to their art seem to tend to try and rewrite certain things theyve created many times. I myself find a song I've written just keeps getting better after I have recorded and published it. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is another modern artists who has many songs that are rerecorded or altered and sound different. Jimi and SRV, icons as they are, did the same.

The outro could easily be another 3 minutes longer & would still not be long enough for me. It's like Sir Psycho Sexy's older, more mature outro

The Peppers really know how to make outros... Qixotic Elixer, Turn it Again, Slow Cheetah, Wet Sand, the aformentioned Sir Psycho Sexy, and now add Bag of Grins to that list...

Reminds me of the "One Hot Minute" era.
    And that's awesome.

Not really. I like one hot minute a lot. It’s my second favorite album. This is something different. It’s not really comparable to any of the others.

    • @DemonSlide
      @DemonSlide Рік тому +2

@@connorbingel7134 I guess it's because it's a darker and heavier type of song that I associated it with One Hot Minute.
But I'm not really comparing them at all.
Although I'm a big fan of both as well.

The ending of this song is the most satisfying RHCP outro since Quixoticelixer, imo. Such a beautiful payoff.

I really like how the lyrics are written in first person and the speaker turns from confused to raging to a kind of certainty of his fate, to then longing and consoling his partner from beyond. At least that's the impressions I get from the lyrics.
I also like how the music reflect the speaker's thoughts. The verses are pretty slow; the song explodes on the chorus, and the bridge and the outro feel like different songs.

This might be for hardcore fans: Compare the background vocals of John in the last chorus of Bag of Grins to their live TV performance of Under the Bridge (1992) where he goes nuts and screams „Ooooo“ in the outro. I have the feeling they just copied and pasted this in here. Fits so perfectly lol! Love those guys!
