You bring up something that really is true. I've lived life as a single dad for over 10 years while raising my son. I was literally depressed without realizing it. One day I decided to start working out. It has changed my life and my mentally HEAVILY. I sleep better, I'm happier, and I actually look forward to the day. Fitness is really important for your mental health, and I feel ridiculous that it took me 40 years to figure that out.
@@2fingys_ Being sober gets easier and easier the longer it goes. It's definitely not easy. I've been sober for 15 years now. You can definitely do it, just take it one day at a time, and before you know it, you won't even think about it.
Don’t be embarrassed I’ve worked 2-3 jobs since I was 16. I barely made enough to cover the bills. I’m 47 now and honestly finally made enough to stop working 2-3 jobs and 60-70 hours a week recently like 2 years ago. And I have to work in the middle of the freaking Atlantic Ocean. You’re going in the right direction. Follow your heart. You may never be rich but you’re far from poor.
Yeah you're old enough to be my daddyz , I'm 22 sheesh oldy my dad is 48, hm I don't need any of my human family to motivate me to working hard physical fitness, male health, I just need God. I certainly would do better if my father worked with me but I'm becoming by not needing the help of my anyone because I simply have to do it alone , it's ironic that I binged knowledgeable humans who knew of physical fitness which only males could and were the only sex capable of providing me of such informational knowledge no female could do that for me cause I wanna become conqueror of my mind and body, then emperor of a country, I'll have my own wife by then as you old men do, I cannot fail single day, for I've laid back long enough, if I become lazier or keep the lazy male I once was I will not exist sooner enough than a female who's obese , weird how males die faster but that's reality can't argue with the truth, when humans don't work hard morally righteous for Christ we perish into evil, one piece of advice from God not from me, don't follow your heart big mistake man, God man said "Evil desires arrive from humans heart do not follow it's desires, but instead follow God who is good and will reach you his good ways , provide for you" My heart has evil desires always. Hey John! I've been a LONG TIME supporter - back in the OG long beach days *baby onesies, Vanny?* , I'm 22 now and I started watching when I was 14. I myself have evolved along this journey with you *currently trying to buy my first home and navigate adulthood* and im so proud to have been on this journey with you! As a longtime supporter, I've always been interested in the back end of how everything works as it helps me with my own life outside of this! *watched a lot of graham Stephen growing up and was always interested in the numbers and how things worked* life started to get in the way of skateboarding for me when I was about 17 but have always still watched purely for the backend of things! So I think if you get to a stage of being completely transparent with everything, a lot of us would love to hear it! The good, the bad and the great - We've been on this journey a long time and will continue with this new chapter in your life! Appreciate everything you've done for me John! Thank you!
You already have so much John: a beautiful wife, a daughter, living in LA and so on. Money is important and you'll reach your goals! But dont forget to cherish what you already have :)
I love yours and sara's transparancy about an unperfect life, unperfect plans, and focusing on moving foward. I love your content and it ads a lot to my days.
Man it's so fascinating because I'm in the opposite position as you, and I look at your ability and I'm so... not jealous but moreso sad that I will never have that level of athleticism because I sacrificed so much time to get where I am now. I quit skating to join the military and get my finances squared away. At this point I'm super stable financially, but my body is just so broken, and I gained a ton of weight, and now I'm trying to come back to skateboarding and lose all the weight, but I'm recovering from a broken hip so it's taking time and I can't play with my kids the way I wish I could. But yeah I can provide so that's great. I guess I'm just trying to say it's easy to feel like you've made bad decisions, but no matter what you choose you're going to feel the downsides way harder than the positives lol. In any case, let's keep improving and work forward
I’ve watched your stuff for ever dude, I’ve always appreciated your openness and vulnerability. Lately it seems like you’re even more open about things and I relate to a lot of what you’ve been going through and talking about.
Really appreciate the courage to share all this John. Especially around feeling like you're failing. I think a lot of people have that on their plate right now. And I think you're right that the answer is creativity, exploration, and finding a way! Thanks for this video
John, I think you’re truly doing a wonderful job at balancing everything. With the little one that just came along and skating.. along with youtube and even entrepreneurship. I think you really don’t give yourself enough credit. I know it sounds kind of cliche but If that were me.. and most people would agree, you’re doing amazing with breaking everything down and embracing them and going in and just in all doing YOU. I love watching you because of the way you process things and are creative and of course along with your skating. Sometimes though I feel like you need to take a step back and understand that it’s okay to give yourself some credit dude. Love the content, don’t ever stop boss.
I don’t follow you super close, but i’m proud of you for coming to these realizations and using your platform to send a positive and beautiful message. We all move at different speeds, so you should never feel like you’re late. You’re right on time, bud. 👏👏👏
Physical fitness does great to fight depression. It has also benefitted me (about to get back into that because I'm a big boi). One suggestion that I have: I avoid language like "my depression" or "my anxiety". I made that decision because it's not mine and it's not for me, so I don't claim it as my own. Having a kid REALLY brings all the most important things into perspective. I have 4 kids. I was depressed and struggled with thoughts of taking my life for years. I found healing in faith in Jesus, but doctors and medicine, and focusing on your physical health all helps. It's all connected. I'm stoked for your life that you share with Sarah, I've been watching both of your channels for a long time. Keep killing it, bro.
I can't speak on everyone, but I would be very interested in going into the minutia of your businesses. A good portion of your audience as probably grown alongside you
Happy to see you share your story and make steps in the right direction for you. Sometimes it’s hard for men to speak out on these things so thank you for doing that and being a positive influence on not only myself but your audience. Excited to see your journey brother.

i miss so hard john's new york vlogs.. and now that he has a kid they are probably never coming back. which bums me out. those vlogs as a package deserves awards for how good they were.
I'm in a very similar position as you are, except replace skateboarding with music, living the dream as a full time music producer, as well as being 32 and recently having had my second daughter. i'm thinking about leaning more heavily into making youtube videos/vlogs again (something that i've tried in that exact "leaning not all the way into it" way that you mentioned in the past couple of years) so this video was sorta exactly what i needed to hear. so refreshing and inspiring to watch, loving these vlogs recently. thanks john!
❤ I’m 43 and went through a very relatable arc when I first became a father 6 years ago. You’re doing all the right things… Robert Greene’s book Mastery did wonders for helping me navigate a world I didn’t/don’t feel like I fit into naturally. You’re not to late, Truett Cathy didn’t even start the first Chick-fil-a till he was 46 😎 Completely understand the drinking pressure… I’ve always felt as long as I’m having a drink when I’m happy, and not doing it excessively… I’m ok with it. I do also take dry streaks, and if those ever become hard to accomplish, I’ll stop drinking all together. Much love and really appreciate content like this ❤
Only a couple minutes into this video... but that first part you said about just jumping full in to content creation was very much needed. I pull a lot of inspiration from your content for my parkour videos, and i've been trying to apply myself more to my content creation recently... thanks a lot John, needed to hear that!
I love the vlogs man. And you inspire me so much. I’ve been watching your channel since I was a kid and seeing how you’ve changed your life inspires me to do the same. Keep killing it

a Fruitful and Beautiful Future awaits for you John! I was watching your content and sarah’s since highschool, now I’m in college and it feels like everything’s changing. And I’m glad that you’re making the right moves. I’m glad I got to connect with you again ♥️. Hope and Compassion is what we need right now. I confidently believe you’re gonna thrive from now on, knowing you and your one in a million advantages that got hidden from life’s circumstances. I believe everything happens for a reason. Honestly, I’m more interested in these kinds of content now. And In my opinion, You have the IT Factor, this niche is for you and now, there’s a lot of possibilities that are in favor for you, career wise. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I’m with you and I’m proud of you. Keep up the Great Work and Stay True and Honest 💖
I’m 49 and I own and operate a screen printing business of 23 years. I’m still not making the money I want to make and… I have 3 kids that are now 3 teenagers. I used to think I knew what “making it” was but I also feel like I’ve been chasing a carrot on a stick. But… there’s more to life than money and owning things.

Would love to hear about the numbers! Would be super informative and beneficial 🙌🏾. Also loving these updates and catch-ups, as an old fan I really appreciate these conversation style videos. Amazing to see your development and progression over the years, and it’s always interesting to hear where your mind is at. Keep inspiring people and keep killing it! 🔥
Loving these vlogs man! Can confirm this kind of content is awesome and reeeeeally helpful. I'm not in my 30's or a skater but I'm thinking about a lot of the same sorts of things you are and it's so great to hear your thoughts and process! Keep killing it!
I have 26, i realized 3 things watching friends that could't live without skate: 1 - knees hurt the most you DONT skate or do sport continuously. do running with friends. 2 - if you make your life around skate, it's difficult but HIGLY interesting to do activities outside the box. Let's be real, they never reach that skating feeling but some of them are amazing. 3 - the farest of drugs and alcohol, the better you feel. 4 - If you think that working 8/12 hours a day don't give you time to skate, believe me, you will make that time. Take care of yourself mate, going out is scary but less than doing a hadflip from a 10stair.
As a fellow artist, showing the process of how you’re creating and building this is great. Maybe you tell us how you found who will print your shifts or who makes your prints or do you make them yourself?
Would love to follow your business journey with numbers. Nothing narcissistic about this vid, it’s a vlog, literally a video diary about you. Keep crushing
Working out is definitely great for the mental BUT, much like any other task you feel like you SHOULD be doing it can also become another catalyst for lower lows. Whenever I fall out of my consistency and start missing workouts I am so harsh and really beat myself up over it - making it just one more thing that can send me spiraling. I still think it is absolutely worth it for everyone to add some form of exercise into their regimen: we just need to be willing to cut ourselves some slack if not always 100% consistent (sometimes easier said than done.)
Hey bro it’s normal to be having your identity crisis and depression at the age you’re at. Especially with a kid and new expectations you are probably feeling. My kids are in college and I was an independent corporate and commercial filmmaker for the last 15 years and I took a step back and decided to make the things I love as an artist. I’m lucky to be good with money, retirement house paid, investments etc but that took time and planning with patience. Maybe it’s time to take a step back and revisit your passions and go all in. I’m happy to say I’m completing my UA-cam partner application on my first channel after putting it off and building content for my other channel interests and exploring all that SoCal has to offer. You’ll figure it out dude.❤
I get it I’m from Columbia, SC and decided to move to Los Angeles for content and things have just gotten hella expensive like I cant fathom where I’m at rn having a family and trying to support unless I’m making crazy money so I understand how u want to set urself up to have a Saftey net but I think your incredibly smart and can come up with some way to get you in that position you want to be and still doing the things you love.

please please please do indeed make a video about the fitness aspect, as a 38 year old who grew up as a skate rat i hated all the gym bro fitness culture and never gave attention to my physical health and while im doing alright and relatively active, coming back to skating has shown me how much weaker i am than i thought. so im slowly trying to incorporate fitness into my daily life if for nothing else, to help me be able to skate safely and more frequently (less injuries)
you got this john. sometimes its just finding something new to do. you got a lot of people in these comments in similar scenario. you aint alone. eat the elephant one bite at a time.
Well, that was pretty shocking for me to see. I've been watching you since I was 16 and you've been THE human reference for me ever since. I first came here for the skate content, but I stayed for everything else. I literally learned how to kickflip in 4 stances by watching you, I improved a lot of my English by watching you, I got the courage to start my first company after Progress Daily and have used that verse, "Progress Daily" for my life for the past 7 years, and I even got married with how you and Sarah work as a couple in mind. Since I started watching your vids I can assure you that my life has changed in a fantastic way and I am so grateful to you, even though we have never met and don't even live in the same country (I'm from Brazil by the way) I can say that you have contributed to me as a human being in some way. So when I heard you say that you've been through all of this, it firstly made me sad and shocked, but it also made me realize that my reference is also a human being, and one of the most admirable qualities that a person can have is to have the courage to say that it's wrong or to have a weakness in some part of life. So thank you John for being you and I hope you get better every day and have a fantastic life.
Good stuff! I’m excited for you, dude! My wife had our son almost two years ago and my priorities shifted quite a bit. It sounds like that might have happened to you too.
I'm in an interesting position in life. I want to build a business around music sync licensing (and have to really focus on creating a bunch of songs) but have a full time job, but also want to lose weight, workout, get back into skateboarding, AND golf. OH and I'm 34, have a 5 year old, and a 4 month old now, and don't feel like I have time to do anything other than work and family time. lol I'm happy, but time is at a premium. Don't know if it's your audience either but I'd love to see back end numbers and behind the scenes of building the business!
Great chat John! If you start working on the backend more then I think many people would like to share your journey and learn the steps you take. I could certainly use help on this side of online content creation and I know many other could too!
Wow, thank you for being so transparent having kids really changes your perspective and priorities. I think you’re doing an awesome job utilizing all your skills and outlets to support your family and that’s great to see. Keep pushing and sharing.
Would be really cool to see the business side of things, I really enjoy these types of things and it would be really cool to follow your journey. As a digital marketer, I would recommend maybe an email campaign for your course😉 just some food for thought, keep up the good work really enjoying this type of content and like how transparent you are
I’m sure you know, but wholesale and licensing should be goals of yours. Direct sales via Etsy and Amazon are no joke, but once that takes off decently, get into some trade shows, having identified your best sellers, and market to businesses so you can scale up.
Hey John, longtime subscriber here. Back when you started living in Cincinnati. I’m just windering how is your experience with living away from your extended family, like your parents and brothers? I’m on the verge of making a move far away from home and am just wondering what is your experience with it? Good and bad. Love the new vlogs, it brings back some nostalgic feelings. Keep moving buddy, i’ve always looked up to you ❤
John Hill, we don’t know each other, I subscribe to your channel. I just wanted to give my two cents, brother life is good (not easy). Don’t panic! You are an amazing skater!!! Push your Art, you do great work! Your audience is primarily skateboarders, give us your Art work!!! Btw, enjoy every moment with your little stinker❤ When my boys turned 18, our relationship changed dramatically 😕
Interesting video John. All I’ll say is be careful talking about the things you’re going to do, the brain gives a sense of satisfaction which often takes the wind out of the actual real life act. Show people what you’ve done, not what you are going to do. I’ve owned my own business for 15 years and seen many people come and go.
hey bro John Hill, love your advice, you should let us know when you wanna come to phoenix, az, cause i'll definitely be there to support, foshow. but i got other things going such as playing music, so i'll support. There's the wedge, there's Tempe skatepark, and then there's another park, that's kinda small, but it's a privateer park that i know, and there's all about reed park in Phoenix, trade secrets from a fellow skater on the D.L. ^.^ future references bro, luv your videos =J
John, you have a million subs. As a golf YT fan, thats where all their money is made, they aren't just relying on views and YT checks. It is the YT way. I know merch is "cringe", you said yourself, you want to do cringe things and its ok. And you are a designer/artist, you can design the clothes.

Love you John. I relate to so much that you are saying, as I always have. I've also lately realized I need to start really prioritizing and thinking hard about income, and focusing on trying to build "business" instead of just being a "Creator" and it's been challenging and often confusing. Money is the game we're playing, can't really escape it, and I think I may have finally accepted that. This journey ain't easy. Godspeed brother. You have been an inspiration since the beginning of my creator journey.
Hey John, was wondering if your flower revive board will ever get reissued. That design is sick and would love to get one in a 8.5! That’s my favorite deck graphic!
As a skater I don’t agree with how a lot of skaters think financially it seems like a lot of them don’t have goals and ambitions. Anyways I started up my first business 3 months ago and it’s growing insanely fast I just got tired of being broke all of the time working for people. Time was flying by and people I went to school with were doing way better then me. So I had to make a change if I ever want to own a home. The 9-5 jobs are dead unfortunately and you can’t make a living off of that anymore. Thanks Joe Biden 😊 But yea I do think it’s important that you try to encourage skaters to be more productive financially wise because all they think and care about is skateboarding and people literally clown on the entire skateboarding industry for being broke, drug addicts and losers. We should all try to break free from those stereotypes

❤
I’m 43 and went through a very relatable arc when I first became a father 6 years ago. You’re doing all the right things… Robert Greene’s book Mastery did wonders for helping me navigate a world I didn’t/don’t feel like I fit into naturally. You’re not to late, Truett Cathy didn’t even start the first Chick-fil-a till he was 46 😎
Completely understand the drinking pressure… I’ve always felt as long as I’m having a drink when I’m happy, and not doing it excessively… I’m ok with it.
Can you believe this dude gets paid to do the best thing ever!😂 love you stuff John!!!
I love the vlogs man. And you inspire me so much. I’ve been watching your channel since I was a kid and seeing how you’ve changed your life inspires me to do the same. Keep killing it
thank you for being as honest as you can be for the time being john, seeing your journey since 2017 till now is really inspirational! youve def inspired a lot of people, thats why we keep watching! keep crushing it and thank you again for being you and what you do
a Fruitful and Beautiful Future awaits for you John!
I guess what I’m trying to say is,
I’m with you and I’m proud of you. Keep up the Great Work and Stay True and Honest 💖
You’ve been at this a long time you got this man… you gotta make money lol we get it. Don’t feel bad for providing for your fam
Im in a shit spot, getting kicked out, might lose my gf. I need to get my shit in gear and have no idea where to start. Cant even skate
Good luck and stay strong
@@makkerfelix lost her😓
i love when youtubers i grow up watching make these kinds of advice videos.
casey started his daily vlog at 35 man. you're doing fine.
ngl im hardly interested in the entrepreneurship stuff but I love your videos and have been watching forever so learning about it by hearing from you is actually enjoyable
Man this video hit home... been working through a similar thing and also 33 in September.
I have 26, i realized 3 things watching friends that could't live without skate:
1 - knees hurt the most you DONT skate or do sport continuously. do running with friends.
Dang it. This is so inspiring. So excited for what's next for you!
Never give up. We are all limitless and beautiful in our own ways.
You got it man. You'll be fine.
It's so refreshing to see you just vlogging. Excited to see what you get up to!!
jon did not fall off, he became a father
Always love your insights, progress daily , nothing is perfct
Working out is definitely great for the mental BUT, much like any other task you feel like you SHOULD be doing it can also become another catalyst for lower lows. Whenever I fall out of my consistency and start missing workouts I am so harsh and really beat myself up over it - making it just one more thing that can send me spiraling.
I still think it is absolutely worth it for everyone to add some form of exercise into their regimen: we just need to be willing to cut ourselves some slack if not always 100% consistent (sometimes easier said than done.)
I’ve been in the same spot since you were in Ohio lol trust me your life is together bro😂😭😭
Literally same. I aspire to be like John.
i mean same, like i haven't changed much since then either besides my location lol
@@JohnHill I feel you I’m just messing, I appreciate your videos keep being great🔥
You're forgetting the wife and the daughter. Massive steps!
Liking and commenting to help these vids in the algorithm! Keep up these vlogs!
“There's no dishonor in having a job. What is dishonorable is scaring away your creativity by demanding that it pay for your entire existence.” Liz Gilbert
You got this brother💪
please please please do indeed make a video about the fitness aspect, as a 38 year old who grew up as a skate rat i hated all the gym bro fitness culture and never gave attention to my physical health and while im doing alright and relatively active, coming back to skating has shown me how much weaker i am than i thought. so im slowly trying to incorporate fitness into my daily life if for nothing else, to help me be able to skate safely and more frequently (less injuries)
you got this john. sometimes its just finding something new to do. you got a lot of people in these comments in similar scenario. you aint alone. eat the elephant one bite at a time.
Breaking down profit and running this business could be super valuable and engaging content man 9:48
Man I really like this video. Thanks for sharing, I know its not easy but it is helpful for you and is as well. Keep killing it my guy!!!
Don't know if it's your audience either but I'd love to see back end numbers and behind the scenes of building the business!
john is bossing up😤🔥
Great chat John!
Real talk, I feels as a zaddy of 2 trying to create . Life’s tuff when u just wanna make stuff
Let's go alcohol free. I need inspiration, and it sounds like you do too. ❤
Not that my opinion matters much, but I think the children's book route seems very promising as a business that could combine creativity and scale
Love you man, same thoughts on art/career everyday now, thanks for sharing ❤
Keep moving buddy, i’ve always looked up to you ❤
good news John,, especially that improving your physical health has had a positive effect on your mental fitness..
Great video!
Please keep up the good work!
Siiiiiiick Storror shirt! Love that channel!
hey bro John Hill, love your advice, you should let us know when you wanna come to phoenix, az, cause i'll definitely be there to support, foshow. but i got other things going such as playing music, so i'll support. There's the wedge, there's Tempe skatepark, and then there's another park, that's kinda small, but it's a privateer park that i know, and there's all about reed park in Phoenix, trade secrets from a fellow skater on the D.L. ^.^ future references bro, luv your videos =J
I’m interested in seeing anything you have to show and that you’re invested in.
John, you have a million subs. As a golf YT fan, thats where all their money is made, they aren't just relying on views and YT checks. It is the YT way. I know merch is "cringe", you said yourself, you want to do cringe things and its ok. And you are a designer/artist, you can design the clothes.
Getting a baby in America will make you think your broke fast. Its shocking how much it is to put a human into this world.❤ Hopefully your books will do well and your fans will keep watching them youtubes clips😊
This was amazing John
I would LOVE to learn about the business side of the channel! Im a similar place in my life and want to learn more about monetizing youtube from a small to big channel
More T-shirts. I'm in!
really interesting to hear you speak about this:)
Hey John, do you recommend any podcasts? I'm looking for something like you suggested, promotes positivity and creative drive.
take us on that detailed journey .....please
Do what makes you and the algorithm happy!
Yo would you consider using cottonwood firing squad or tv girl for some of the music to make it feel like the older vlogs?
YOO NEVER NET SOMEONE WHO KNOWS CWFS LESGOO
John i love your videos
Been waiting for you to post again 😭
Love you John hill
Holy shit, sounds like you don't know what the hell you wanna do...and honestly, same!
You r the best in your line of work. Do you need to fix anything in your life?
Love you John. I relate to so much that you are saying, as I always have. I've also lately realized I need to start really prioritizing and thinking hard about income, and focusing on trying to build "business" instead of just being a "Creator" and it's been challenging and often confusing. Money is the game we're playing, can't really escape it, and I think I may have finally accepted that. This journey ain't easy. Godspeed brother. You have been an inspiration since the beginning of my creator journey.
Do you have any recommendations on getting in the graphic design/ digital editing career field?
Also been watching you for years and love seeing the growth of your business and designs
John, haven’t you heard of Wu Wei… the art of not forcing. ☯🤔
Hey John, was wondering if your flower revive board will ever get reissued. That design is sick and would love to get one in a 8.5! That’s my favorite deck graphic!
Bro do the numbers I’ll b more interested in this journey with that seeing the margins and the growth
Before even watching, your life isn’t broken brother I think fix is the wrong word lol
Love you John
I think you may be a little bit hard on yourself. You have a really crazy work ethic and it shows.
you’re awesome
