Electrickery - Toyota Dyna Glow Plug Relay Repair

  • Dad recently acquired a 1985 Toyota Dyna Diesel truck, which has an issue starting when cold.
I expected this to be a glow plug issue, and eventually traced it to the glow plug relay not working as expected. Bridging the terminals with a copper jumper, the truck fired up straight away, so we then focussed efforts on the relay.
The age of the relay meant it was “user accessible” and a few seconds later we had it open and saw the internal carnage to the glow contact.
In this video, we show how this relay was repaired using some scraps and then chucked back in the truck.
Certainly a lot cheaper than $120 for a new relay!

G’day JB Sound repair for a common problem with the Dyna and Delta. Those starter always sounds if it’s struggling to crank.
    Cheers

A lot of info missing. It would be great if you could include: 1. Where is the relay situated? 2. What causes the timing in the ON position? (is it part of the relay?). 3. Can the ON time be adjusted? Many thanks :) 💕

Gday mate, apologies! The relay is in the from left under the dash. The timer is controlled by an output from a control module, and I doubt that it can be adjusted simply. Have a great day!

Nice restoration! Your speaking audio was super low and I couldn't understand what you were saying at some parts and then the music at the end blew me out. i would say dial music down 4 and speech up 3. Hopefully constructive criticism I know audio can be real struggle I have problems with it myself at times.

Bold moves boys! Gotta try at least - right. Step over a dollar to pick up a dime what they say. But they lack the joy of doing the nigh impossible. The Evaporust was truly dark magic.
UA-cam was having fun with the accent this morning. Behold Jabba the Flux.... was one best guess it gave.
Looked pretty good. Proper bush repair. A little dielectric for the air corrosion and it is as good or better than new.

My mentor grew up in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, under sanctions, and taught me well that you can fix anything with a few bits of old fencing wire and a piece of string!
