This was ECSU's first year under new instruction. I admit they didn't do as we'll as I would have liked, but they have come a long way from what they were last year. As one of their instructors, I am very proud of what they have accomplished in such a short period of time. Props to Mr. Powell and the VSU drumline or giving ECSU the opportunity to show everyone who we are and the new direction in which we are headed.
I love it when show style lines incorporate a more core-style approach to their playing. I enjoyed VSU's music the most. I give show style lines a lot of respect when their basses have difficult splits as well. If it was a bit cleaner, it would have been perfect.
i love how vsu's basses are tuned to a dci level. They sound so good!!! but they have dirty spots...but ecsu's basses were a little cleaner to me..i love the mixture of styles in both bands, but ya'll gotta clean it up. vsu's quad line killed it because they were clean and it their material was a little more technical..ecsu's quad line material was on a high school level to me...ecsu's snare line was a little more cleaner than vsu's snare line
I loved every second of this video you guys are awesome. Looks great sounds great and Is a lot of fun to watch.... {Thanks for sharing this video with us.}
This what makes VSU stand out. They have a mixture of DCI and groovin collaborating at the same time which I call a balance drumline. The only thing their missing in my personal opinion is tenor drums not QUINTS/SEXTET but tenor drums. Then they really be off the hook but you have to know how to use the tenor drum in the drumline and how to incorporate it.
At PlushChronicles. I marched DCI. This is a different thing. It's about putting on an exciting show, not necessarily perfection. It certainly isn't points competition like DCI. Appreciated it for what it is. Geeze man. I never understand why people have to be so harsh and closed minded.
I really like the uniformity of both of these schools. Usually when you watch drumline battles like this, the schools have various different drum harnesses, heads, and brand drums. Both of these schools have good matching equipment. And they all played pretty clean. But I liked VSU a little better. Both were pretty great though. I give this video a like.
VSU is great drum corps styled drumline, but I think they'd lose severely to a DCI top 12 drum corps as far as drumming goes; even though I think that VSU would probably be more exciting than those top 12 drumlines. VSU's beats would simply be more entertaining and accessible to the audience.
Red team killed the blue team...end of story. They were cleaner by far. They brought that "A" game had more poly-rhythmic cadences and were funkier because of that. In my opinion it wadn' even close. Killed them with the first cadence. Seriously, I've been teaching percussion for over 24 year. That was a tight line man.
Im not sure if this was before or after a game or ECSU didn't get a chance to tune the tenors/quads/etc.. The 10" drum had the weirdest overtones in it. And Vsu's snares sounded like the top head was wayy tighter than the bottom, which gives alot of "pop" but zero "wetness".. Id loosen the strainers a little, bring the bottom head to a higher pitch, and bring the top head down half a turn on each lug. The snare will be the same pitch but sound a million times better!
I JUST MOVED TO ELIZABETH CITY 2 MONTHS AGO FROM NORFOLK AND DIDNT EVEN KNOW ELIZABETH CITY HAD A COLLEGE SHIT FOR THAT MATTER A BAND. AFTER WATCHING THESE VIDEOS, I GIVE YALL PROPS, THE DRUMLINE DID ALRIGHT. AS FOR THE BAND AS A WHOLE, FOR A SMALL BAND, YALL SOUND GOOD. I HAVNT BEEN IN-TOWN YET DUE TO MY CRAZY WORK SCHEDULE, HOPEFULLY I'LL GET THE CHANCE TO SEE YALL PERFORM IN PERSON BEFORE THE SEASON IS OUT
what do you mean niether was together there wer plenty of clean moments and cadences all through this battle , not everyone adjusts their basses the same either , and vsu practices control i dont know what video you were watching
ECSC snares ate up VSU, Granted VSU tenors is probably the only thing that gave VSU a shot. but food for thought, if your snares are getting called and you can´t respond with your WHOLE snare line...then you lost. these guy put in the same hours during bandcamp so there is no excuse why your whole snareline doesnt know the music. just saying.
Both of these lines are beyond fantastic. However, the person filming has a lot to be desired. Lots of shots for the cymbal and the combo drums but not of the snare line. Go figure
Maybe just maybe you should leave out the stick tricks until you can play clean and make them mean more. Anyone can flip a stick but not anyone can flip a stick and be clean. A lot of dirt coming off those two lines for sure.
thanks for noticing captain obvious . we can hear the dirt , just because they are doing stiick tricks does not mean that is where the dirt is comming from .
It's very evident that many of you who have watched and commented on this video have little or no sense for marching percussion at all. No, cold steel wouldn't do anything to VSU, no, an eighth grader couldn't do anything against this line... just no.... Vsu is one of about 3 great HBCU drumlines which all have similar styles. If any of you marched for any kind of percussion ensemble or marching band you would have a general sense of respect and appreciation for battles and drumming like this.
It doesn't matter where you are, when you hear a drum off.
You stop and enjoy the magic!
👍👍
This is the perfect competition! Two drumlines that are in the same league! And one is almost as good as the other!

This is like the perfect blend of corps and show style. Like, they can go either way. And that's hard.
I love it when show style lines incorporate a more core-style approach to their playing. I enjoyed VSU's music the most. I give show style lines a lot of respect when their basses have difficult splits as well. If it was a bit cleaner, it would have been perfect.
Vsu Quints are funky nasty good.
Dwight Allen yeah but I don’t think they can hold a candle to NSU
3:00 cymbal and voices effect. Amazing! Both these drumlines are incredible.
i love how vsu's basses are tuned to a dci level. Michael Burns ecsu snare line was dirty as heck
Travis BamBam Mason lol man I was mad young at the time🤦🏾♂️

Exactly but their style does sound decent
These guys and gals are goooooooooooood!!!

thanks man if you only knew what we go through
these guys should be sponsored by Nike because they just did that shit
Travis Baker both of them weak! Lmao smh looks like high schools to me
Would love to see a drum off against and drum corp line!
VSU is great drum corps styled drumline, but I think they'd lose severely to a DCI top 12 drum corps as far as drumming goes; even though I think that VSU would probably be more exciting than those top 12 drumlines. VSU's beats would simply be more entertaining and accessible to the audience.
That bass line though! Both sides are pretty clean
This was great.Thank you for sharing.
I love about 30'minutes from this school and seen their line, and as a corps style DCI follower, VSU is legit as fuck
Red team killed the blue team...end of story. They were cleaner by far. They brought that "A" game had more poly-rhythmic cadences and were funkier because of that. In my opinion it wadn' even close. This is My second favorite College Band they be Getting it tho!!!!
Both schools did exceptionally well both are winners in my book.
I wish people would stop panning the damn camera so much or get a 360 camera and a tripod!
Im not sure if this was before or after a game or ECSU didn't get a chance to tune the tenors/quads/etc.. The 10" drum had the weirdest overtones in it. Bass drums killing it with those rolls
Elizabeth City aint no joke both Drumlines are Assume.
This was awesome and the line sounds good. I am not sure about the cymbal section for vcu but loved both.
These kind of cadences would be perfect for marching to the football stadium!
The snares are clean and crispy, just like my bowl of chips.
I gotta say. The vsu's crashes did an amazing job with suspending. I love the six-drums. I know there are quads and tries, but what are they called?
***** thanks
They're actually called sextets, quints are five.
Thanks for the info
THEY'RE CALLED TENORS.
Those bass drums
DE QUE PARTE DE LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS SON ? TOCAN CHIDILLO
OUR CYMBALS SOUND GUD AF DOE!!! DEY JUS DANCE MORE
I love this vsu drumline its got both of what i like in a line!
It's a shame I still have the sweat suit from this year.
I have witnessed VSU's quads. I have lived.
my two favorite drumlines....
Dude im a DCI fan that started out with showstyle and still love it VSU is number 3 right now.
yeah I realized after seeing ECSC lol, my bad. But they're not, the ones BD had a shiny pearl-white coating, not plain white.
We are named ECSU. Not ECSC.
I JUST MOVED TO ELIZABETH CITY 2 MONTHS AGO FROM NORFOLK AND DIDNT EVEN KNOW ELIZABETH CITY HAD A COLLEGE SHIT FOR THAT MATTER A BAND. Dang love that santa clara snare drum solo thats a warm doe
sound like corps pretty dope
I have to admit ECSC had more snare tricks in the bag. VSU quints rocked.
VSU is so nice and clean. They cymbals are on point and everything the line plays has a groove. ECSU nice but they got some cleaning up to do.
Not bad for a couple high school bands. These kids should do well when they get to college.
what do you mean niether was together there wer plenty of clean moments and cadences all through this battle , not everyone adjusts their basses the same either , and vsu practices control i dont know what video you were watching
The drumline in blue was standing on business that day.
You haven't heard many college drumlines have you?
Who ever recorded dhis , didn't have to do a close up on dha snare player who dropped his stick on Blue side....
Cold as in "ColdSteel" ?
Some of those cadences sounds like marching cadences
It's nice listening to clean lines. And yes I'm a DCI fan.
ECSC snares ate up VSU, Granted VSU tenors is probably the only thing that gave VSU a shot. but food for thought, if your snares are getting called and you can´t respond with your WHOLE snare line...then you lost. these guy put in the same hours during bandcamp so there is no excuse why your whole snareline doesnt know the music.
just saying.
this is like surprisingly super clean
vsu is perfect blend of corps and show style. i fuck with this shit
Both lines are good but VSUhas better showmanship! I miss this!
hey damn this is pretty good!!
Good clarity, nice groove
both did good but the red line was dope im just being honest
Tight. Groove. Show. COLLEGE! Nice!
Sick chops from both drumlines.
were is that dudes stick
Glad to see there are HBCU drumlines that don't use those awful tenor drums.
Holy fuck did I just watch the ending of Drumline but the real life version?
Davis Weiss I love that movie
Both of these lines are beyond fantastic. However, the person filming has a lot to be desired. Lots of shots for the cymbal and the combo drums but not of the snare line. Go figure
#VSU hands down #trojanforlife but i give it to ECSU they came a long way so major props to them
I would love to see one of these drumlines up against M2. Great talent and awsome beats.
the cymbal slide choke they were doing at 3:35 was pretty nice..i like that
Maybe just maybe you should leave out the stick tricks until you can play clean and make them mean more. Anyone can flip a stick but not anyone can flip a stick and be clean. A lot of dirt coming off those two lines for sure.
A whole lot.
always been that way with these two schools. very few HBCUS are clean with funk. I could name a few but its just my opinion
thanks for noticing captain obvious . we can hear the dirt , just because they are doing stiick tricks does not mean that is where the dirt is comming from .
It's everywhere except the bass runs..
pretty sure the setuplets were clean ...and cymbals
excellent rythme
Can not mess MDFS not close it sound like us twenty years ago
Are those BD drums from 2011?
their uniforms would look so much better if they put the harnesses under :(
Proof?
Wow This Was LONG ago ..... Come see ECSU now i promise we have improved since then we use this battle as fuel to keep elevating higher
what schools are those?
Cameraman zoomed in when buddy dropped his stick
why so much hate towards VSU ?.... #3 drumline in the country, thats probably why
VSU CRUSHED!! The other drumline dude lost his stick in the middle of performance. Faking it till someone brought it back to him. LOL
If you were less ignorant, you would know that 'faking it' is in fact the correct and expected thing to do.
well I dont know who determined that VSU was the winner but the sticking of ECSC was great
That first track by VSU Dope
vsu all day beside the other band one of them drop there sticks
i meant the way their uniforms are and they way theyre marching
Please type so we may understand you.
See ECSU this year. We doing work. 2013!
This has to be the wackest battle EVER! Both lines have really dirty parts, but I hear VSU playing some cold material.
Outstanding for both crews, well played ladies and gentleman.
This was a decent battle, we still got a long way to go tho ECSU done came far from last year tho sheesh.
It's very evident that many of you who have watched and commented on this video have little or no sense for marching percussion at all. 7:58 nice vanguard bite.....next time try NOT to make it sound like channel 3 ZZZZZZZZZzzzzz....sticks every where bro!
They should wear their carriers underneath the uniform. It would make them look less jank...
I was talking about the white pearls...
the one in the blue was jammin!!!
they played cheesy puffs by the scv
check out Santa Clara Vanguard and Blue Devils thats real drumming
Watch ECSU new blocks from this year and Warren County block
come on vsu snares...yall can be cleaner then that but ecsu went in
But that was all based on what I heard on a video! Not live.
Rhythms from Mother Africa!!!
hell of a lot better than the drum liune movie battle shit.
The dirt contest was the best at 15:50 ish! Lol filthy!
