Certifications without relevant experience are useless in my experience. Most employers these days are cherry picking candidates to pay minimum wages. The IT landscape is extremely competitive, and this is an area where a lot of IT training providers fail to deliver in that the technical knowledge and certifications can be useful but only when combined with practical work placement experience, but it's the old adage, companies won't give you a foot in the door with a work placement without previous experience, but how can a candidate get experience without experience? I would advise anyone struggling in IT to consider another path that is not dependent upon the latest technology fad. Certs also have the problem relating to expiry as the technology keeps changing, on top of the cost for an already underpaid and overstressed IT worker.

You make a few good points, but I think not the right conclusions. Just having a certification will not get one a job. Getting into a new field and switch career paths, one cannot expect top salaries right away. Be nimble in the beginning. You got to be willing to work harder than others and more hours than others and all of that for lower pay. But nobody says you have to do this forever. Do this for 6 months and suddenly you have work experience. Add another certification or two during that time and suddenly your resume looks a lot better and opens doors.
Certifications are not the only path, but with the right mindset and attitude towards this challenge, certifications are a valid and proven path to success.
