I have seen one of these kinds of 2-10-0 “Decapod” Steam Locomotives in operation at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois back in October 7th and 8th 2023 which was Frisco 1630 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1918).
Unique and unusual back story for this locomotive. I never knew America made trains for other countries. I like the cow cars and the Hershey cars in the train. Great review Eric!
I noticed Lionel hasn't been putting the correct minimum curve on all the boxes. The L1 box said O54 but the catalog said O42 (O42 is correct). The I1 said O72, but that's only for the long haul tender. Mine was the short tender (O54) but still said O72 on the box. I really think this locomotive is beautiful. I like the blue color.
This is fairly normal for the Chinese factories pumping out cheap junk. They often let the little stuff like box printing, colors, and fonts slip because they don’t care at all about the American idiots paying a premium for the junk, they know they’re just making disposable junk.
Hi Eric from Scotland. Hope you and Lisa are well and looking forward to Spring. Love the Decapod, color may not be exact but has a good industrial look. Have shared your UA-cam details with a relation down in Ross-on-wye in Herefordshire in England. Spreading the word. Bill
Its crazy how long ive been watching this channel and its always exactly how i remebered. I remeber when you first got the steam turbine engine and the one with the backwards pointed stack!
I actually saw the Seaboard 544 today at the nc transportation museum. And since there was hardly anyone there today because of rain I was able to climb into the cab. Of course they have it inside the roundhouse. Such a cool place, glad I live about 20 minutes away and can stop pretty regularly. Thanks for the videos.
The only thing that I'm not really a fan of with this model is the fact Lionel was contacted by the Illinois Railway Museum asking if they could help fix the inaccuracies on their IRM 1630 model. And Lionel straight up rejected their help saying they didn't want to make the changes. And yes, I did ask someone at the museum last year at their model train shop and they did in fact reply with the information presented above.
Nice video, as always. The Russian Decapods and the Milwaukee Road Little Joe electrics both have such a fascinating history behind them. I was tempted to get the USA version and kit bash it to make it look like a Soviet Railways YE class with red running gear and Soviet emblems adorned on it. I decided ultimately to pass up on it.
Harry Hieke could do an excellent job as a custom run --- complete with Russian speech and effects --- how about a long set of old Russian cars to go with it?
That is a very nice locomotive. The #1 bell and whistle are always the most prototypical to me and my favorites. The gap between the engine and tender doesn't seem too bad and the drop plate helps it look closer. The tether is just fine, too and visually helps make the gap look smaller. I only own one engine that isn't post-war or MPC and that is an MTH Rail King Southern Ps-4 Pacific with the tether and I like having it. Good connectivity and not much to go wrong. A great review, as always.
That looks amazing. To me, Whistle #4 sounds like a toy a kid would play with. If I set up a layout for Lionel Legacy stuff, I'll 3d print a housing for the electronics inside the Legacy remote in case the internals are fine but the outside is cracked. I don't like taking chances when it comes to getting zapped.
@@markkilgore938 we've got multiple pieces of Russian iron jacketing at the museum I'm at and they're pretty close. I'm not denying that Lionel has botched many colors lately but this isn't one of them.
interesting thing bout the erie is that in the 1880s and 1890s they saw the susquehanna as a threat to their operation and bought up most of the susquehanna's stock and the erie became the majority shareholder. Because of that the susquehanna also had russian decapods too but in the early 1930s due to the great depression, all ties with the erie were severed and walter kidd was named as the new trustee of the line and the wilkes barre and easton a susquehanna subsidiary was shut down.
I really like this locomotive and the color. It has a nice tight gap between the locomotive and the tender. I think whistles 1 and 5 sound the best. It's definitely a screamer. I don't model O gauge, but this price seems high.
When opening any kind of box don`t have the blade of any kind of knife going upwards because I found out the hard way on February 14th on a Wednesday night while cutting foam
1-3 love figure in tunnel. Great locomotive 🚂 and USA version be great with military train 🚆 but I'm Seaboard fan also living near old Clinchfield line Marion . NC
16:43 Considering the price of those stock cars, I'd be annoyed for them to have sent me a set with.... I have no idea what that even sounds like. That is nothing like any animal I've raised.
How would you know if it’s the right shade of blue back in the day you weren’t even a thought obviously you were not trackside to witness it in person to be able to determine if it was the right shade of blue!!!!
Video Notes:
1) This video has chapters in case you want to skip around.
2) Maximum Speed is at 20:59
Eric, what is the pulling power? I got the Iron Hippo set + a whole bunch of extra matching gondolas. Including the set, I have 20 of them
I love this train it just calls to me
Those high speed shots ok Casey Jones 😂 awesome review as always Eric!
Thanks
In Soviet Russia, train drives you
Ha
😅😅
🤨🤨🤨🤨
lol
😅
You know that's a cool little engine and I love the bell.
Those cattle cars are GREAT!

Looks great, Eric. I like that Erie blue. I have really enjoyed my Seaboard version I purchased a few months ago, really well done by Lionel.
Great information on the Russian Decapod Eric! I like learning new things whenever I get the chance! Thanks for the great video!
My favorite whistles are #1 and #3, and my favorite bells are #1 and #3
These engines have such a cool history, plus a very elegant esthetic
I love this model Decapod, and I love whistle #1. I love all bells.
Awesome!
The one at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union is cool to see in person. Great video!
Nice locomotive, really excellent job on the video Eric! Love all the shots at different speeds and angles, well done.
I love the cow mows Eric!
Unique and unusual back story for this locomotive. I never knew America made trains for other countries. I like the cow cars and the Hershey cars in the train. Great review Eric!
Thank you very much!

holy moly, now that’s the definition of speed right there 20:59
Haha
Great video Eric! This model looks awesome.
Thanks!

That’s too bad.
Excellent video. Missing one from my collection, still need a reason to buy one. Features looks great as well as the body.
Great video Eric thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Being a OO modeller, the idea of a wired tender connection not being the norm is still surprising to me.
A very special locomotive, and an excellent embodiment of an important piece of American railroading history. Well done, Eric!
Many thanks!
The actual SAL 544 can be seen at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer. North Carolina.
Nice run. Like to see you are able to run it fast. JH
21:01 the speed of that thing is crazy!
Happy Easter
Beautiful engine terffic video I really appreciate an enjoy your videos thank you sir keep them coming
Thank you!
Bro, your digital effects budget went up in 2024! 😆 I love it!!!
Thanks
Fav bell n whistle is #1 !
Russian Iron, more like Rushing Iron. The colors on this locomotive are fantastic. Wonderful video!
Extraordinary video whistle no5is my favorite awesome camera work and aboard train footage 👍🏻💫💫💫💫💫

21:00 Thats what I call high speed freight service :D
Wow! That Russian steam locomotive looks so cool!
Whistle 1or5. Bell, definitely 1. It looks good but sounds great! 👍🏻

Thanks so much!
Eric I know you get a kick out of unboxing those trains, me too. Those ground and gopro shots are awesome..
Thanks 👍
Great video Eric like your decapod
That looks amazing. To me, Whistle #4 sounds like a toy a kid would play with. If I set up a layout for Lionel Legacy stuff, I'll 3d print a housing for the electronics inside the Legacy remote in case the internals are fine but the outside is cracked. I don't like taking chances when it comes to getting zapped.
Awesome locomotive
As usual the first bell and first whistle for me beautiful locomotive and tender I like the color too
Would love to see the I1 Decapod soon.
You shall!
I enjoyed. Your video on the Russian decopod the cab ride was great how in the world did you mount the camera on that engine great job.
Thanks
Whistle #2, Bell #4 are my favorites!
Damn I was liking the first couple whistles but I wasn’t expecting #5. Any idea what whistle it is in real life??
Very detailed model. The shade of blue is actually pretty close to Russian iron. Maybe a little saturated, but I'd call it close enough.
The color is wrong ... pure and simple. Typical of Lionel Trains in the 21st century.
@@markkilgore938 we've got multiple pieces of Russian iron jacketing at the museum I'm at and they're pretty close. I'm not denying that Lionel has botched many colors lately but this isn't one of them.
That reminds me of Strasburg #90. Fantastic ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks!
Whistle no.1
Favorites are #1 and #3.
I need to buy one for myself
OUR russian decapod comrade

No. 1
Whistle #2 for me
Hi! We. Like #1 Whistle It's all number# 2 the bell Thanks 😅
Yeah I really like the Russian decapod I have the Philadelphia Reading and it's amazing little engine
I live in Erie pa and it is a small town big on tourism but it’s home to me
Coolest Small steam engine
Observing the unboxing made me wonder if the boxes of the ex-MTH Lionels are the same size as their predecessors' ones.
No, Lionel did their own boxes
I really like this locomotive and the color. It has a nice tight gap between the locomotive and the tender. I think whistles 1 and 5 sound the best. It's definitely a screamer. I don't model O gauge, but this price seems high.
Yeah, O gauge is expensive
BFIMO is the open space between the boiler and the running gear
Cool
I like Whistle #3 and bells #1 and #4
Whistle 5, Bell 1
The cattle.car adds to the effects of the train experience
It does!
This is the first video I've ever seen you do that didn't have the engines pulling power.. kinda shell shocked lmao
Yeah me too! I forgot
i Love your videos
So do I!
Since you're on the subject of soviet steam, it would be nice if they did an O scale AA 20, otherwise known as the soviet 9000.....
Not a bad idea
When opening any kind of box don`t have the blade of any kind of knife going upwards because I found out the hard way on February 14th on a Wednesday night while cutting foam
Indeed
your hobby shop have fisco 1630 version?
The bells sound the same but different pitch
Indeed
Beautiful loco. Not sure about some of those whistles. A bit more like a sinus infection 😊
The color of the locomotive to me on looks primer gray.
1-3 love figure in tunnel. Great locomotive 🚂 and USA version be great with military train 🚆 but I'm Seaboard fan also living near old Clinchfield line Marion . NC
Thanks!
I play the Soviet anthem for the 2-10-0 Decapod
Haha
I like #3 for the bell
Декапод Паровоз Еа.
16:43 Considering the price of those stock cars, I'd be annoyed for them to have sent me a set with.... I have no idea what that even sounds like. That is nothing like any animal I've raised.
They’re cows? 🐮
I believe Whistle #4 is the real life 1630 whistle!
How would you know if it’s the right shade of blue back in the day you weren’t even a thought obviously you were not trackside to witness it in person to be able to determine if it was the right shade of blue!!!!
I have the ability to travel through time.
One whistle sounded like a cow
Russian? Is it a fast train?
Yes
Паровоз СССР Союз Советский Социалистический Республик.
Should of got 1630
Nah
give it a american tender, coupler, paint job, and headlight and then it becomes american
That is a lot of wheels 🛞 my favorite whistles are number one and two and my favorite bell is number one
Cool!
