Great review! I learn more from this review than I would have going to the dealer and looking at the vehicles, per se. It is the most HONEST reviews you will find on UA-cam. Others are just car salesmen doing them. I am glad they changed the touch pad on the future models, since it is still the same on the 2022 Lexus RX. It is a learning curve to get the hang of it. Hope to see a review on the 2022 RX350 in the future reviews.

Your review is great because you tell us about some mechanical things along with the view of the bottom which is great for folks like me who want to dive deeper into this vehicles operation
Wonderful review. I’ve heard, the reason Lexus went with the button door handle has to do with sensors detecting bikes, cars or pedestrians traveling by and not allowing the door to open crashing into them. A mechanical solution would not have worked as well.
@wth2021i dont agree. These companies reaseach things. Reviewers dont. Those are just opinion based on little things they know. Saw lots of vidoes videos where a motorcycle, Bikes or even cars hit the door becuase the passenger or driver did not know something is coming at the back.
I work for Toyota so I may be biased, but the electronic door handles are electronic for safety reasons. It will stop you from opening your door if a cyclist or vehicle would impact the door were it opened. In that case it will beep at you and not open the door. As you said though, there are mechanical work arounds if the battery or electronics fail. Some other cars have a similar setup like Tesla.
I have the same system on Audi with classic door handles. They also would flash or be blocked if some obstacle is detected. So - no reason for such complicated handles that no passenger is able to open or close (unless they are instructed before).
Thanks you for such a comprehensive and informative review. It's interesting the difference between the US and UK/European reviews of this car. In the UK the reviewers love the e-latch system and the steering wheel controls remarking that they're both clever and sophisticated, otherwise barely getting a mention. In the US and Canada, the reviewers, without exception dislike them. The same is true of the run-flat tyres (tires). I've had run-flats for years on my BMWs and I like them, I trust that if I get a puncture when travelling at high speed that I'll be easily able to maintain control and won't have to stop on the side of a busy Motorway/Freeway to attend to a flat. Sure there's a little more road noise in the cabin and they're maybe 5% more expensive but I also get more luggage space. The additional weight of EVs and PHEVs does put extra stress on the tyres and they're more likely to suffer from flats making run-flats an even more logical choice I think. Looking forward to delivery of my 450h+ next month.

I have owned three Lexus vehicles over the years. Gone away to BMW then Volvo. But am going to go back to a Lexus NX 2022. I have tested the new car extensively and it is superbly refined to drive with a brilliant adaptive cruise system and the best heads up I have ever seen. The touch buttons on the steering wheel are overwhelming initially but once you have set up your favourites it's very easy to use. As for the doorhandles, yes they are a little strange but you get the collision avoidance as a real benefit. Progress I guess.
Thank you for a very detailed review. I have been driving the 450h+ for two weeks now and overall, I love it. The door handles are not such a bad thing - people will get used to it. The steering controls are something else. The touch controls (just the function display) show up on the HUD every time hands graze over them - especially while turning and is distracting. They also lack texture and force the driver to actually look at the HUD or the buttons, every time a button press is required. Perhaps a SW update will include an option to disable controls display on the HUD and include more customization of buttons.

This is a good in depth and honest review. The new doors are linked to a sensor that won't unlock if it detects a car or bicycle on the side. I think it is an unnecessary complication, but that is how Lexus justifies it. My only other complaint is that there is a lot of piano black plastic on the inside of a $60k+ car. It will look terrible with a few years of usage.
I dislike the piano black too..I did see a video where someone had the piano black near the center console “wrapped” with a mat finish vinyl…sorry no pic available I forgot to screen shot it:-(

I have the 350h and so far just loving it! It did take a bit but got used to HVAC settings. I'm a month and have learned how to set up shortcuts and other easier ways to automate stuff. The Lexus "Siri" is very accurate so don't really need the touch screen as much as you might think. It should be noted that the steering wheel controls are for the top level ONLY in Canada. Any other level there is no HUD or programmable buttons on steering wheel.
@The Car Care Nut I am a Master Certified Lexus Parts Specialist, I am pretty certain these new NXs do indeed have the new stem replaceable sensors. The new IS generation does. I will grab a 2022 NX VIN tomorrow and look it up to make sure.
I was actually shocked when I saw this and checked it on the repair manual and new car features it doesn’t list the separate type at least for the NX450h+ please do update if you find anything
Thanks for looking. I am hoping this is one of early pre-production cars that have been round for awhile. It has the Texas manufacture plates that I had seen on several of the first UT reviews and the car looked like it has seen a few miles by all the dirt on the underside. :-). Hopefully, yes, they will have it.
Just a comment re the new door system. The desire to avoid the so called “dooring” accidents is highly desirable. This type of accident is so prevalent that it has its own name and makes up 15-20% (or likely more) of all bicycle car accidents and car door openers are considered at fault in most states. It usually results in severe injuries to the cyclist, not to mention the costs and insurance issueS. As a cyclist who has had to avoid this more than once (never hit thank goodness) I am very happy to see Toyota/Lexus do something about this. This feature makes the NX more desirable to me.
Thanks for the review AMD. What should we do once the run flats wear out? Just get regular tires? How do we get around not having a spare tire? One big reason I don't want the plug in is that it doesn't come with Mark Levinson sound systemas an option. Also later on the range on on evs are going to be much greater than 40 miles. They will be in the 200-300s. 2022s will be stuck with 40 miles of ev range. As of yet the charging technology, where you can charge, how quick you can do it is not convenient and efficient.
Hi! I would get regular tire and have the inflate kit. Otherwise get a spare tire and leave it in the back for long trips. Not ideal but better than nothing
@@IftiIftiIfti I have CC2 on my 2017 CRV already. Thinking seriously about getting a NX 350h, so looked already to replace the run flats. Unfortunately, Michelin does not yet make the CC2 for the 235/50R20 wheels at this time-just the Michelin X-ICE, Pilot and the Primacy AS. The Fsport and Luxury trims levels all have the 20 in rims, I think I would rather have just the std 2335/60R18 wheels on the lower trim as an option just for the tire options.
@@xfirstxlast6502 So you are saying, if I wanted to replace the run flats, I would also need to replace the wheels as well? I'm thinking about getting the luxury package that comes with 20 inch wheels.
I wish Lexus would make a compartment that we could put into the back in place of what is there to hold a spare tire. Will go to regular long lasting Michelins once the run flats wear out. Worried about how they will do in New England winters
I’ve been debating which one I should get as my own car between UX and NX so thanks so much for your in-depth, no bs, and honest videos! Keep up the great work!! 😊😎👍
Hi, AMD in regards to the why are there are 3 hood latch on the new 2022 NX. this is the answer that I found in a article. "The engine hood uses a twin-lock structure, a first for Lexus, to suppress engine hood vibration caused by air turbulence, contributing to improved quietness." Also, is the new engine T24A-FTS a good engine. Thank you for your great videos.
As much as I don't like the grilles on Lexus, the 450 grille looks very good with the rest of the front end. It just seems to blend in better with the angular design. I'm with you on the door handles. That's an unnecessary gimmick. I know this is an apples to oranges (or lemons) comparison, but Lincoln used those on the Continental. They are great when they work properly, disastrous when they don't. The infotainment system looks nice and modern and not like 2002 graphics that Toyota/Lexus seem to be stuck on. I still prefer actual buttons and dials for the HVAC controls. Thank you for showing us the new Lexus. It really looks like they did a good job with it. I have a lot more faith in Toyota/Lexus refining the hybrid models than the twin-turbo introduction in the Tundra.
I recently was given a 2022 Outback (while my wife's car was in the shop) with the touch screen only HVAC controls and found out how dangerous they are to use while traveling on a highway at upper speed limits as well as on an unfamiliar road or in heavy stop and go traffic. If a driver traveling alone needs to take their eyes off the road to put on the defrost, it could be exceptionally dangerous or even fatal. Thank-you for pointing out this flaw in the Lexus 450+ design.
Love the video! In your opinion, is the 350h use a reliable engine and transmission? I can't find a good video (like yours!) that goes over what the engine and transmission that is in the 350h (the one I bought). Amazing video! Thank you!
@@TheCarCareNut Thanks! I was talking about the NX 350h. But, from what I read, it's basically the EXACT same car as the NX450h+, just with a bigger battery. I could be mistaken, but the Engine (A25A-FXS) and the transmission, as well as the motors are the same. Thank you though! Love your videos!
Thanks for mentioning the backup camera - that’s something which no other car reviewer has touched on, but as a Toyota customer, has been annoying on my 2019 RAV4. I’m glad to hear that the NX has fixed this.
There is also a backup camera washer on the NX. If you live in the north where there is snow and a dirty camera in the winter. The camera washer is a great plus.
The new door "handles" - I think that implementing the auto-locking feature (to prevent opening when other cars approach) would have been complex with a fully mechanical system: you will either constantly lock/unlock the door (noise, wear) or would have to add a secondary solenoid to disable opening (noise, more complexity). Seems to me the fully electronic solution is simpler (although having a secondary mechanical system as back-up may nullify what I said).
I think the outer handle is the compromise and "price" of the price of the NX. It's a "simulation" of the good old inductive door handle of the prius and later cars of Toyota. The inner handle is a very good idea, I think. One can prevent an accident and pushing is better than pulling I think. The only thing I don't understand is, why there is a manual mode and a automatic mode. There has to be a better solution.
OH! The Proximity Warning Speaker.... My 2022 Hylander Hybrid makes that same sound. Once I was backing out of a parking space and this older woman was loading her groceries and she gave me the thumbs up and waved. I rolled down the window and she said "Having a hybrid makes the angels sing and your car is singing! God Bless You!" It was sweet, but yes, it is an annoying noise.
They lost me with that complicated button to get out of the car. To me, that's a huge safety issue. If you ever find yourself in floodwaters (common here in the northeast) or God forbid in a lake, you're dead. Also, if somehow the car loses all electrical power, and the doors are locked in the hot sun. You can't improve upon a simple manual latch to get in and out of a car. Simple as that. AMD, gotta say you do a great job on these videos. As an owner of 2 Toyota's, I look forward to every video you make. God bless.
Here I am again at 3am watching my favorite channel and master mechanic. I just traded my wifes 2015 Rav4 XLE for a new 2024 NX250 (retirement present). I bought the base model to avoid turbos, CVTs and excessive electronics and my wife loves the car, Not a fan of the electronic shifter or the run flat tires but overall the quality level is high and drives and handles well. I chose the NX because the 2024 Rav4 XLE model had very limited color choices and didnt like the excessive black body and fender cladding. The NX is far more attractive. Last year I bought a new 4 Runner so now our transformation from Honda to Toyota/Lexus is complete and look forward to our retirement years to be trouble free with help from the car care nut!
Hi AMD, I was looking at used 2016 Lexus RX450h AWD, it has 64K miles on it and asking price is $36K. Is this a good buy? What are the things that I need to look at when I go to see the car? I know you had a video of good used Lexus cars and RX350 is one of them, does that applies to RX450h too? Please reply, your input will help me a lot to decide. Thanks
AMD, Best of all, most NX models are now made in Canada as the RX has been for years. The 450h is a little too complicated for my tastes, a simple 350h would be fine for me.
@@renoallstate4573 I don't care about that. It's just your mentality. In fact, there is no survey telling you that. I have been driving Lexus made in Canada without any quality issue at all. On the other hand one of my friend ordered a car from Japan shipped over Canada. A few year later, his car was cover with rust. Because the car made for Japanese or asian market don't have the same level of rust prevention as the car made for Canada. I know what you going to say. The vehicles made in Japan for North America market will have different quality control compare to the vehicles for Japan's market. Well, that maybe true. But I rather buy Lexus made in Canada, because I know for sure, they are made for Canadian environment.
Took over a year before I had my NX delivered but it was worth the wait. Was not sure about the electric door latches but it is alright. Everthing else is fantastic
Sometimes there is too much "gimmicktry." I bought a new 18 RAV4 hybrid XLE because I liked the old school, notch shifter and the manuel emergency brake. and didn't want the newer 19 and on with the electronic parking brake, and the new shifter. I guess it is just me but some old school stuff is better. Oh yeah I like my nav/info screen built in. Just a neater look.
Fantastic review if I were looking at the NX I would have to say the doorhandles probably be a dealbreaker for me I would hate to have to get out of there in a hurry or emergency situation thanks CCN….
Ahmed, how many computers, microprocessors and sensors does this car have? Did Toyota capture the chip market to make these cars? Another excellent car review!
AMD has done a wonderful job of extolling the virtues of this car, but I have a few complaints that I feel compelled to add. 1) I just can't support the use of touchscreen controls for HVAC. Knobs and sliders are best; buttons are a decent equivalent. But touchscreens and menus? As a Canadian who lives out on the prairies, I can very easily imagine a day when I head out to my car at -20 Fahrenheit; the screens tend to be slow and non-responsive, and my hands tend to be covered in thick gloves. Capacitors? Forget it. 2) 100% agreed with you - what in heaven's name are they thinking with those ridiculous doors? Much easier to be able to grab a whole handle while wearing gloves than it is to try to hit a button on the back. 3) In addition to the run-flat tires, what is the deal with those gigantic rims? That tiny brake rotor marooned in the middle of that huge empty space looks ridiculous! Big rims are heavier, are much more expensive, require much more expensive tires, and lead to a less comfortable ride. It's a plug-in hybrid! They could probably have grabbed some more range with a more reasonable tire/wheel combination. 4) SUVs have apparently given up completely on the pretense of off-road capabilities; the lack of a spare tire is a shocking oversight. (Though everyone deserves criticism for this now. That's hardly just a Toyota thing. I blame BMW for the trend.)
The new doors are linked to a safety feature where they will not unlock if the sensor detects a car or bicycle on the side. I think this is a dumb idea and unnecessary but that is the justification.
I am in Sask and have had a RAV4 Prime for a year, you would like it. Real door handle, physical HVAC knobs, spare tire no runflats. Handles -40 just fine.
Just a thought without having seen the door switch mechanism.. perhaps it’s more “complicated” but also reduces parts and therefore cost. I imagine there’s no cable and other associated physical bits. Toyota is very very big on saving costs.
Like my AWD Prius, the muffler hangs a few inches lower. I was concerned mine was a defect compared to our non-AWD Prius but learned it’s because of the rear motor…don’t want it getting heated from it.
I notice on some Lexus models they are also getting rid of the cruise-control arm system on the steering wheel column. Is Toyota moving away from that? Personally, I think it is the most intuitive cruise-control of any vehicle. Also, I love your videos and appreciate the honest analysis! Thank You!!!

They will be in the 200-300s. 2022s will be stuck with 40 miles of ev range. As of yet the charging technology, where you can charge, how quick you can do it is not convenient and efficient.
Michelin cross climate 2
Another fantastic review! You really have the talent to reveal what a buyer is interested in!
I soo agree that the run flat tires are loud and expensive to replace!!
Great video as always. Love this compact suv. Have a hard time find this suv right now.
I’ve been debating which one I should get as my own car between UX and NX so thanks so much for your in-depth, no bs, and honest videos! Keep up the great work!! 😊😎👍
Another awesome video AMD 👍👍
Another informative video. Thank you again. This is helping me make an informed decision on buying my next vehicle.
Hi AMD,Your reviews are the best.
Love the video! In your opinion, is the 350h use a reliable engine and transmission? I can't find a good video (like yours!) that goes over what the engine and transmission that is in the 350h (the one I bought). Amazing video! Thank you!
Hi! Honestly we don’t have the hybrid IS in the US so I am not very familiar with their exact setup
This NX model looks really nice, high end premium. I love the back with LEXUS letters
So the doors, the (run flat)tires, and the steering wheel controls are the downsides.
Overall it looks like a very good car! Thank you for this video.
Don't forget the wheel studs instead of lug nuts
Doors are fine, he’s just a boomer. Steering wheel controls, aren’t bad on non luxury trim versions(no heads up display)
Quite agree about run-flats after a 328i which had them... a pain in the rear.
I would go with the gas models after watching. Toooo many things to go wrong down the road unless you get rid of them after the warranty.
Great video. I love Lexus and I hope to afford to buy one someday.
I have a 3rd gen Prius with no noise maker and I surprise people in parking lots a lot. Happened today, and that’s not good.
God bless.
Have not yet taken delivery but my understanding is that there is a manual override for just those reasons. There is a door handle you pull twice.
Last year I bought a new 4 Runner so now our transformation from Honda to Toyota/Lexus is complete and look forward to our retirement years to be trouble free with help from the car care nut!
i agree with you, Lexus has gone frivolous. That's the reason I am buying a Toyota instead of a Lexus.
Toyota is so cheaply made all plastic but I hate both brands
Grecian Water is best color
Very good review of the vehicle and loved the way of total explanation and tempted to buy the vehicle.....
NICE CAMERA BROTHER! IMAGES JUST POP!
Superb content as always AMD. Love your channel, please keep up the great work! Thank You!
AMD. Please get a hold of the new 2023 Sequoia when you can. We are planning on buying one. We want your opinions and in depth review like this!!!
Pretty sure it has the same drive train as the new tundra so just watch that video
@@ericchen776 the Sequoia is hybrid only for 2023.
An excellent review. I really enjoyed the very sensible and practical advice and opinions.
Very informative video as usual, I’ve been watching your videos in while. Keep up the good work.
Thanks
Please do a review of the NX with the new turbo engine. Keep it up Car Nut
Is this the same engine as the Camry you showed in your videos a few days ago minus the hybrid system.?
AMD, Best of all, most NX models are now made in Canada as the RX has been for years. The 450h is a little too complicated for my tastes, a simple 350h would be fine for me.
The 350h imo is at odds. It gets near 40mpg but it requires premium fuel
Why not just get a venza limited that gets the same mpg on regular gas?
IMO I would rather have the J at the beginning of my VIN
@@renoallstate4573 Venza is manufactured in Japan
@@renoallstate4573 We Canadian taxpayers had to give Toyota a 'gift' of around $250,000,000 to get the super profitable NX made in Canada. 😒
Very interesting video. Never saw such a detailed review. Thank you.
Excellent review as always.
This is what a proper car review should be like.
I wish one day you would show a Lexus LM 350 but I guess that not for the American market
Great review extremely helpful! Deciding between this and the acura rdx could you possibly make a video on that? Thanks stay blessed
Not a fan of the massive grill but overall that car looks sweet. I like how you can get a 4cyl version.
The grill now looks acceptable . It has changed
Ahmed, how many computers, microprocessors and sensors does this car have? Did Toyota capture the chip market to make these cars? Another excellent car review!
Innumerable
Too many! Couldn’t hook up a scan tool to this one to find out
Great review! love the channel
This was the video I was waiting for. Thank you.
excellent work i like your way of reviewing the car.
God bless you.
Wow thats a great color and good looking car
I wish you can present us other Japanese cars like this perfect presentation, thank you.
I wish I could get a NX 450h. My dealer told me I may not able to get an allocation after August or September. It ends up to get a NX 350H instead
As a Canadian who lives in Ontario, I would just buy the more practical RAV4 Hybrid.
@@InternetDude Sounds like, overall, a better choice - and at some $20,000 less than a fully-loaded NX, a pretty compelling deal.
@@MTerrence yes and there is instant $5,000 federal rebate for the EV ness of it (not on NX due to vehicle price).
Just a thought without having seen the door switch mechanism.. perhaps it’s more “complicated” but also reduces parts and therefore cost. I imagine there’s no cable and other associated physical bits. Toyota is very very big on saving costs.
Have you thought of switching over to sales? Your knowledge and passion puts 99% of new car sales to shame...
He’s too honest.
Like my AWD Prius, the muffler hangs a few inches lower. I was concerned mine was a defect compared to our non-AWD Prius but learned it’s because of the rear motor…don’t want it getting heated from it.
Quick question. Now that I’m retired, I only drive my Prius c 4 or 5 miles each week. Should I add a fuel stabilizer?
I notice on some Lexus models they are also getting rid of the cruise-control arm system on the steering wheel column. Is Toyota moving away from that? Personally, I think it is the most intuitive cruise-control of any vehicle. Also, I love your videos and appreciate the honest analysis! Thank You!!!
It seems like they’re moving away from it slowly. I agree I really liked the stalk
