  • In 2012, Brooklyn MC Joey Bada$$ dropped his debut mixtape ‘1999’ at only 17 years old. At the time, free mixtape sites like DatPiff were a major distribution platform for hip-hop artists. Now, the music industry has moved on to streaming services and the Pro Era rapper recently celebrated the project’s six-year anniversary by bringing it to Spotify, Apple Music, TIDAL, and Google Play. To mark the occasion, Joey sat down with Rob Markman on the latest episode of Genius’ 'For The Record.'

What Joey has Accomplished by the Age of 23 is Insane for a Lyricist. Neither Kendrick or Cole had the Discography, Sales and Acclaim joey had at That Age. He has 1999 Summer Knights B4.DA.$$ And AABA already under his belt. Just imagine what he will have accomplished by the time he is Kendricks Age.

Revok Sixth Joey’s sound is nowhere near mainstream enough to reach the heights of Kendrick career, and he shows no intent of changing his sound to do it. The man is extremely talented but I don’t see him accomplishing much more than he already has if he doesn’t switch up soon

I think the biggest issue is that the lil pumps, yachty, uzi, etc. get so much more shine and views than people spitting the bars. There no issue with those dudes being around at all but i think it says a lot about us as listeners. Because that’s what everyone is eating up the most.

He's been saying it's coming for like 5 years. Foh. The boy STEEZ said it was nearly done on tumblr before he passed. Joey's just holding it up on account of some vague "business" shit, never getting into the details. Yeah, I'm bitter. It's always some fucking excuse. "The world ain't ready yet." Check the history. Dude barely spoke on it for years. Let the boy's project live. I have faith that the kid had the potential to make a timeless record, but I don't know. Every year that passes, it could be losing relevancy. Let the project live.

I feel like what Joey brought up in this about how in interviews where he brought pro era with him or had them tag along and was not letting them take the stage a lot was something that hurt STEEZ, I love joey and I’m happy that he said something about it finally for the record.

Boi, 1999 was streaming on Spotify back in 2014 and the pulled it from the platform for no reason!!!! I remember streaming it in 2014 right when Chance 3 rumors started pickin up. But glad it's back because 1999 is one of my favorites of all time.
