    Maps distort our world. They elongate some areas and squish others. They emphasize one place at the expense of another. Even the very nature that north is up and south is down, is a myth perpetuated by the humble map. So how did we end up with maps that are so dang wrong all the time? In today's episode, we break down the history of maps, the most famous map, the Mercator, and a few other popular world maps and how each distorts the world. And why they kind of have to!

    I had a Peters Projection map on my wall when my kids were little. I always thought it would be better if it were stretched out sideways a bit more - making the region where distances across and up were equivalent, closer to the equator than it was.
    As it turned out, the other thing that would have made it better would be to be laminated so it wasn't so easy for an over-energetic toddler to tear apart. We live and learn!

    Great podcast. I love showing people Indonesia on that projection website, people are shocked when they see it layed out on top of Russia and its islands go from Murmansk to Yakutsk

    Fascinating history of projections. While listening, I did a search about the most "accurate" map projection. I was led to the Authagraph projection, which looks really interesting. It seemed to get a lot of criticism because it has been given too much credit by many sensational journalists. Also, though it seems that it is a projection that has had refinements made to it by others.

    I guess we can once again thank the British Empire for spreading this malady of a Mercator map.

    Hi Geoff! Antarctica is so much smaller! Is Africa the biggest continent?

    • @GeographyPod
      @GeographyPod  7 місяців тому +1

      It's surprisingly small! Asia would be the biggest continent overall but Africa is really huge and comes in at #2. Asia is roughly one a half Africa's by area size depending on how you cut up and divide Asia. Thanks for listening!

      That was a question my homeschooler asked. Thank you for responding. We absolutely love watching your videos. We are adding your videos to their homeschool eval notes at the end of the year! We are actually really interested in hearing more about Antarctica and why there is a collective agreement to block off the area. It seems like something is being hidden. Maybe habitable land? I believe, you dont block something off, like Antarctica , unless it has high value. Possibly a land full of precious material? We would love to see your input in a video.@@GeographyPod

      So are other planets flat as well? How do you map those planets on a sheet of paper?
