Many years ago, probably nearer 40 than 30 when we used to fish for flounders at Newhaven and Shoreham. We used to roll a cigarette and light it from the first sign of a flounder bite until we wound into it. Maddies were always the bait of choice as we could dig them as the tides were pushing up river. We also used a cut down float or a shaped piece of polystyrene to keep the bait slightly of the bottom away from the crabs. This also gave it more movement which the flounders love. I now use the same sort of tricks here in Oregon when I'm fishing for California halibut from the shore. A moving bait is a must, there are flotation beads now to keep the bait of the deck. Still the same principles we used in the early 70's, although the gear we use now is much lighter . Nice video but still the same type of fishing we did when we were young and single.

Super video, the underwater shots are amazing, best ones I've seen.Sadly around the IOW and South coast in general our flounders vanished almost over night 4-5 years ago.Nobody seems to know why.

Nice vid but where are all the fish boys ? It’s been many years since I was back home but mid 70’s and into the late 80’s there wasn’t much difficulty in getting 20 flounder on a tide, especially in the Kingsbridge river, the Yealm and Tamar. We fished Puslinch Bridge on the Yealm and I had fish to 2.15 and St Johns on the Tamar was heaving with fish. Have they been targeted by netters for pot bait or have they just moved on ? I don’t know but it certainly doesn’t seem to be what it was.
