    Get a live narrator. The way the names are butchered is ludicrous.

      There are more variants on pronouncing "Ebert" then Benedict Cumberbatch has for "penguin."

      My goodness, can’t humans read aloud anymore? Can’t they just hire someone from a radio station?

      Agreed. The first E in Roger's name is a long E, like the first syllable in seagull. How could he not know that?

    Destry rides again (1939 original).. is my favourite western.. although I admit "The Searchers" is dam good on a big cinema screen..

    #1: Once Upon a Time In the West

    Good choices. Let me add She Wore a Yellow Ribbon with its GORGEOUS COLOR, Wagon Master, Fort Apache, Two Rode Together, Rancho Notorious, Forty Guns, The Naked Spur, Winchester 73, Bend of the River, Man of the West . All of Budd Boetticher's westerns may not be masterpieces but they are ALL excellent. Have not seen Fuller's Run of the Arrow in too long a time to have an opinion.

      Unlike the Dude in Liberty Valance, Jimmy Stewart was great on horseback! And with his gunplay - also totally believable!
      Probably the most experienced horseman to reach star status was Gary Cooper from Helena, Montana. He actually began in silent films as a cowboy extra and stunt rider. Watching him ride at full gallop is like art in motion.

    Seen all of them. All great. No DEI. No Hollywood agenda pushing. Just great acting, great plots, great directing and great production values.

    Ebb-ert? Boggert? Thanks to AI people too young to know Ebert and Bogart will absorb misinformation and pass it on--- like the newsman in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance says: ¨When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.¨ Ergo, when AI ¨speaks¨ the ignorant and the stupid get more ignorant and more stupid. Ebert was extremely insightful and well educated. That´s why his critiques were meaningful.

    3 that SHOULD be on this list, at the expense of 3 others here that have no business being there, IMO are: THE WILD BUNCH, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (with the greatest opening of them all), & RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY. So it goes.

  • @gustavotoro7938
    @gustavotoro7938 9 днів тому +3

    Roger Ebert was one of the critics that hailed "The Wild Bunch" as a masterpiece when it came out, and received terrible reviews from other critics. So, that western should be on this list.

    • @johnnyelizabethton
      @johnnyelizabethton 8 днів тому

      Similarly, he nailed 2004's _The Alamo_ while other critics were falling all over themselves trying clever variants of "forget the Alamo."

    Happy to say I have six of the movies on this list in my collection, and I'm very pleased that Mr. Ebert agrees with my choices. "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence", "The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre", "The Searchers", "Stagecoach", "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" and "Unforgiven" are all in rotation when I'm in the mood to go out West.

    I think The Outlaw Josey Wales should be on this list. El Topo?? Who ever heard of it?
    Johnny Guitar? NIX. Once Upon a Time in the West I would rate as #1, certainly better than Red River.

  • @FrankOBrien-ti7ny
    @FrankOBrien-ti7ny 10 днів тому +4

    "Red River" is possibly the best. If it weren't for the hysterical female who appears
    in the last scenes it would be my no. 1.
    "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." Hard to fault it.

    I’m thankful a lot of folks like all these movies no movie can compare to the Searchers and yes every western has the true story
    of the west his reviews were terrible he picked a-lot of John Ford picks he was a the greatest director in western history but The outlaw JOSEY Wells was a great western and tombstone is a top ten . He left out at least 15 on his picks . Critics suck .

    SHANE should replace CLEMENTIINE and RIO BRAVO should replace EL TOPO. Another unsung western is RIDE LONESOME. Maybe it should replace SIERRA MADRE, which is not a typical western genre piece.

    In the title it says "Classic" Westerns. As much as I think the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly might be the "best" western (depends on mood but it's always in the top 5) it certainly isn't a "Classic Western" and neither is "El Topo", great westerns yes, great classic westerns no.

    Where is "High Noon"? John Wayne objected to this movie because Cooper throws his badge in the dirt at the end which Wayne felt was unamerican. This was at the height of red scare and John Wayne was very right wing. This western was much better than "The Greatest Show on Earth" that won the OSCAR for best picture of 1952 but the Academy wouldn't vote for it.

      I know, but if I recall correctly, Ebert admitted he must have missed something because it was so well loved by audiences, myself included. I lost count of how may times I´ve seen it----well over 100. For my money, it has two out of the three best gunfights in cinema. The third is the final shoot out in Hombre: ¨Well now. Whatta you suppose Hell is gonna look like?¨ (The best lines ever spoken in a movie.) And the fourth best is the stage coach shoot out----¨Kid. Get down from there.¨ I know everyone likes the final shootout in The Good The Bad and the Ugly but I like mine to be swift, realistic and brutal----just like real violence actually is---not the melodramatic, the drawn out and the ludicrous. 😉

    A lot left off but then if you narrow yourself down to 10, well...but Johnny Guitar does not belong on this list, if only because as Crawford said afterwards, she wished they had told her ahead of time it was a comedy (or farce)...she played it straight and ended up looking foolish.

    the author of RED RIVER was not happy with the movie ending, which was quite different from the movie ending. Nor a real big fan of it, and actally the same I feel for SEARCHERS. I have MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALLANCE as my number two best, followwed by HIGH NOON. My favorite is ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST.
