- Explore the relationship between the Amazon rainforest and the rest of the planet, and what would happen if it disappeared.
--
As of 2022, humans have deforested 17% of the Amazon, and scientists warn that we may be approaching a tipping point. It’s like removing bricks from a house: take a few and the house remains standing; remove too many and the whole thing will collapse. So, what would happen if the entire Amazon disappeared? Anna Rothschild explores the relationship between this ecosystem and the rest of the planet.

As a brazilian with an environmental conscience this is a daily terror. We monitor the Amazon's like hawks, and we are fighting all we can to stop it's deforestation. However, there are some who do not think like this and are actively working to its quick deforestation.
Hawk too, eh?

Short answer: Bad things
Long answer: VERY BAD THINGS
Edit: Since the title has been changed, this comment now makes no sense. Original title was: "What would happen if the Amazon Rainforest disappeared?"
Oh wow
Long Answer: Veryyyyyyyy Baaaaaaad Thiiiiiiings!
More concise and much more accurate answer, "There is no evidence that these models are even remotely accurate." There was a time when the Amazon rainforests didn't exist, and life on Earth still flourished.
But that must have been just to spite all of the present-day climate non-believers.
It is 100% going to disappear. I don't even have a doubt. That place is future savannah. Maybe desert, if bad winds prevail.
Just consider that Sahara was green not too long ago _(yes, during human civilization)._
@@VariantAEC Huh? Where'd you get that from? The last time the Amazon rainforest wasn't here was millions of years ago when the global ecosystem was vastly different to our own.
The wildfires smoke even reached the southmost state in Brazil where I do live on. For you to have a clue on the distance, that is farther than the northen part of Brazil is distant from Florida.

The good news is: According to NASA satellite data, there has been an increase in Global green leaf areas by roughly 5% (since the early 2000s, when Amazon deforestation peaked).
This equates to an area roughly the size of the Amazon rainforest!.
Oh and deforestation continues to decrease year after year (reported to be by nearly 50% in 2023).
Hope this helps some of y’all sleep a little easier at night
No we need to fight back and start afforestation
"increase in global green leaf areas" yeah a large part of those is most likely palm (oil) plantations in Indonesia and Malaysia, for which they deforested large parts of tropical rainforests in Borneo island and orphaned hundreds thousands of orangutans in the process.
@ The data suggests that the countries with the largest increase in global green areas (since the early 2000s) are primarily China and India largely due to ambitious tree planting programs and intensive agricultural practices (I.e “The Green Great Wall” initiative).
The Amazon is the planet's beating heart. 🌳 If it goes, the world faces chaos and loss. Protecting it means protecting our future. 🌍
It's also just a unique and wonderful place inherently. It's very much worth protecting for our children to see.

All forests around the world are important, not just the Amazon. Developed countries should take steps to have greener cities and sustainable forests in their own countries too.
All these environmentalists are totally ignoring your completely sensible comment. I suppose only the Amazon rainforest is remotely important, or maybe they think that it is the only rainforest on Earth?
@VariantAEC Well 70% of cancer medicine comes from the rainforest. If you know anyone that has cancer then yes it is the most important
@@Spratdragon
No, it really isn't, and that stat is an open lie. "About 70 percent of current cancer drugs are either natural products or derived from natural compounds, and the world's largest rain forest is a great cauldron of biodiversity that has already produced medicine for diseases such as malaria." - Reuters
Rainforest Trust mentions similarly depressing realities.
The people making claims that we will die because all medicines come from the rainforest have their hearts in the right place in saving biodiversity, but they are not being at all honest. A similar reality exists for the "20% of the world's O2 comes from the Amazon rainforest" stat. The rainforest uses more than 90% to as much as ~120% of the oxygen it makes. So where does our O2 really come from? The world's oceans. Oceans also have an abundance of natural compounds that, all of the sudden, are great for our health, which just so happens to have occurred after "saving the oceans" became a popular mantra in the early to mid 90s.
The reality is that most medicines are actually found around us or synthesized from animals, including humans themselves. I'm not saying that rainforests aren't important or not worth saving, I'm just setting the record straight.

People need to start listening, especially the people on top, because this stuff is actually serious and can cost the lives of us, our friends, our families, and the earth itself. Please continue making videos with this kind of topic because if the minority wont listen, then the majority will take care of it for them.
You should focus on the cerrado the second largest biome in South America that is essential for Amazonian biome health.
Yes, the Rainforest is very important, but the Savannah right on its side is a big carbon sink, and agriculture in Brazil is destroying it. The Cerrado is also a water sponge, as the Amazon make the rains, the specialized flora helps to maintain the water in the soil and rivers, even on droughts.
10 years ago I quit eating cow meat. Back then, I felt so ashamed for the destruction of the forest in my country for the increase of cattle farms that I just needed to do something, even if just a tiny action.
Do people not make note of overconsumption? Like Im not the brightest match in the book, but even I know trees don't grow overnight. They take years, maybe even decades to regrow yet somehow people just chop entire forests down without thinking, "Oh man, it would take forever to grow trees to take the place of the ones that died here... maybe we should slow down a little." Can people who sell wood really need that many on the daily? It's scary to think about how much of a huge imbalance losing the rainforests would be.
The animation here reminds me of the show Scavengers Reign. Absolutely beautiful
Humanity's greed will be it's death.
I always think of Easter Island - a (sub?)tropical island loaded with huge palm trees until humans discovered it.
By the time it was discovered by Western explorers the natives were living impoverished lives and eventually it was used as a sheep farm by a Scottish company?

Amazing animation. Looks like Scavengers Reign
I was just thinking about that but couldn't remember the name of that series. It was pretty good, that weird creature that looked like a giant panda hippo was creepy!
The animation of this video is amazing! I truly think that one of the only ways to stop deforestation is to reduce meat consumption... We don't need to stop eating meat, but a slight reduction would help 🙏🏻 Also, we need to protect the indigenous communities here in Brazil! They are always under attack by ranchers, miners and hunters 😢
As a Brazilian, I'm sorry that my country is unable/unwilling to protect the Amazon. 😢
Awesome as always thanks ❤
Many unicorn companies are destroying Amazon without understanding the impact on the ecology and environment. However on a good note there are people who are doing all they can to save Amazon.
I loved this video!! 🌳🌱🌿
The legend of the "pink dolphin", or Boto cor-de-rosa, as we call them, is one of my favourites from Brasil folklore. They're kind of mermaids and transform into a handsome guy to seduce women.
We have similar stories of water-fairies and spirits in Scotland. Like Selkies, seals who can shed their coats to walk as humans.
this made me cry
So sad to see this forest gone in the future. Most of the forest is cut down to grow soy to feed cattle and to make place for cattle to graze
I would say that the Amazon Rainforest must be preserved because it's forest help control the climate and it's majestic animals must saved from extinction.
The Amazon rainforest is something that benefits the whole world, and it's loss will be felt by the whole world.
Yet the countries with it's stewardship, have a lot to gain in the short term by destroying it.
And politicians, with their short sightedness have accelerated it's decline.
Ah, yes, we are one of the first to watch this new Ted-ed video, which in my screen is literally only minutes old.

I am a first year college student studying Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, and although young, I am shouting to everyone, please take the climate emergency seriously.

Wow, learning that deforestation could affect rainfall thousands of kilometers away is eye-opening. I never realized how interconnected our planet really is! 🌍🌀
'Amazon desert' had a sinister ring to it.
Interesting how these kinds of videos are never about "What happened when the Hercynian Forest disappeared" which was deforestated by europeans or "What happened when the Eastern Temperate Forest disappeared" which was deforestated by the U.S.
I feel like this channel should be watched by everyone who has any political power whatsoever.
What a fascinating topic! It’s incredible to think about how interconnected the Amazon rainforest is with the rest of our planet. Losing such a vital ecosystem would have profound effects on climate, biodiversity, and even our own livelihoods. What are your thoughts on the ways we can help protect it?
Protecting indigenous groups who are masters of sustainability and forest preservation. Shout out to Txai Surui, Ailton Krenak, Davi Kopenawa, Sonia Guajajara and many others.
I wish humans would understand that we only have this planet and we need to care for it. It's so sad what we are doing to our home, lucky I hope I'm long gone when the repercussions occur.

I had the pleasure to visit what's knows as "The Amazonic Caribbean: Alter do Chão" and despite seeing the most beautiful animals and mindblowing landscapes, eveything said in the video IT'S ALREADY HAPPENING..
I fear our grandchildren will only hear of the existence on the books. Go visit there while still stands up, that won't take long!
Everyone can make a difference. Dont buy tropical timber, eat less meat and dairy products, and dont buy gold. The Amazon is so precious for the world, many areas are still unknown and on a daily basis species are still discovered there, so we have to do all we can to protect it. Also products like the Brazil nut and Tonka bean can be harvested from wild forest without cutting 1 tree and generatr income. Together with ecotourism this could generate enough income as an alternative for deforestation.
The Amazon are the lungs of the Planet. It'd be catastrophic if it was destroyed.
Nice explaintion in environment and birds and animal etc.
The Amazon should be a world wide do not touch area. If we don’t we will destroy the earth for everyone

there was a time when i kept wondering why some people seemed to naturally draw others in while i was just…there. no matter what i tried, i couldn’t figure out how they did it. then someone mentioned the book Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki, and i decided to check it out. the way it explains how your aura affects everything around you? it blew me away. it’s like having a secret code to unlock your magnetic energy. this book is a game-changer.

Nice video
Just got back from a trip in Belize. I made a joke that I wanted to see its rainforests and coral reefs (second largest reef in the world) before climate change, pollution, and deforestation diminish them… not sure if I was completely joking 🙃
Okay this just made me sadder.
What a great bedtime story !!
The same thing would happen as when North Africa turned into a desert that created the Amazon forest.
Please explain how scientists evaluate the image of dinosaurs based on bones ❤
First time here 😂 this early. I am ideally years and months later 😂
Now make a video on "What if Amazon AWS disappeared"
It's funny that all the developed countries destroyed almost completely their forests, and now they are blaming the countries that are part of the Amazon for doing the same they did (?)
some think that if the Amazon disappeared the Sahara desert would become the next tropical forestm
We forget that we are just a part of the global ecosystem, and as everything in it, we aren't meant to be here forever. Not even mountains and oceans are forever. Land is constantly moving, in a constant cycle of being swallowed by magma and being born from it at the borders of the tectonic plates. Seas, forests, desserts, they are all temporal. And even after the harsher event, life comes back. "Life finds a way". The amazon rainforest is not older than us, it was born after the last ice age, after the jungle and ocean that was the sahara dried up and became a dessert. There are climate changes happening now, but the world will adapt. Lives will be lost, species will become extinct, but new others will appear. And we can't pretend to be unaffected, living in a comfortable way with things not changing, even after we are destroying things. We as creatures part of this world, we need a humbling from nature. Too much hyubris.
I love this animation! The natural imagery is similar to the TV show, Scavengers Reign. And the information was so good (as always) :))
Cmon guys do our part to protect the mother nature, even if its little

Amazon Rainforest may be causing natural disasters like hurricanes
I just find it amusing when somebody says that individual actions like conscious water usage or recycling matters to the environment crisis, when the root of the problem is wealth accumulation without purpose by a tiny group of people and the governments of every country in the world who act as an instrument for these people.
i used to think being magnetic was just about looks or confidence, but i couldn’t have been more wrong. i read this book called Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki, and it totally changed my perspective. it breaks down the energy and mindset behind true attraction in a way that just makes sense. once i started applying what it taught, i noticed people reacting to me differently almost instantly. it’s seriously worth a read.
What does this have to do with the video
@lambacrown Nothing, they are either grifters or spambots.
Beyond reforestation, (and if that indigenous knowledge could be explained), there is also the science I have grown increasingly aware of general, ecological, balance, and succession between differing ecosystems. Indeed, there may be the science of the water cycle with trees, yet ironically, (even if it might have historically been part of the Amazon), there is a neighboring grassland Savannah habitat that can also be a seasonal carbon sink with the migrating, and feeding patterns of grazing herbivores of which cattle are such.
Either way, well I’m definitely empathetic to how much the Amazon needs protection on top of the other wild places of Brazil I am yet to witness myself; let’s learn what are the exact details of said, indigenous knowledge, how do the South American ecosystem cycle all the natural processes, adapt agriculture, and other human needs for our future.
May we all learn from the holistic balance of healthy ecosystems across the globe, and our own indigenous ancestry, regardless of our ethnicities across the globe. There is at least a time frame of the indigenous roots for all cultures between the Ice Age, the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago, and European conquests.
Is there a list of companies that don't source from deforesters?
Higher birth rates mean more forests will be cut down to clear land for agriculture, livestock grazing, timber, charcoal production, tree plantation establishments and human settlements. Unfortunately, territorial, cultural and racial conflicts have been encouraging population growth race
The population of brazil is pretty low. The pr9blem is capitalism
@@nicocola284 Brazil has more than 200 million people

Af course finding this kind of forests is difficult. We must protect them, if we don't save them, our childs collide big health and environmental problems. I wish I have a lot of money in the future, I will invest to protect natural forests.
Doesn't feel like if anymore, feels more like when it disappeares.
i remember this one time i felt like no matter what i did, people just didn’t notice me. i tried everything-confidence boosters, social tips, you name it-but nothing seemed to work. then i found this book, Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki, and it completely shifted how i saw myself. it’s not just about being noticed; it’s about understanding the energy you project. honestly, this book made all the difference for me. if you’ve ever felt invisible, you need to read it.
