How two years could be so different. - 1935 & 1936 - what they didn't know at the time, who could have imagined it.

The musicianship in "Soon" is exquisite.

I thought Dan Donovan was _"Don_ Donovan" for longer than I care to admit! A lot of people probably did who never heard the band on radio.

This treatment of "Soon" -- the less famous Rodgers & Hart "Soon," rather than the Gershwin "Soon -- is indeed very lovely. "The Sidewalks of Cuba," in an entirely different mood, is nifty, as well.

_My Heart Was Sleeping_ might be called Tango Fox Trot.
_...Boots and Saddle_ seems to feature a quartet, rather than a full chorus.

I'm a fan of both Payne and Hall for different reasons. There was nothing for Payne to have gained by staying at the BBC any longer and when he ended his contract there it suited both him and the Corporation. It can be argued that Jack reached greater heights during his Imperial contract and he was able to have the size of band he really wanted. i wouldn't say that Payne was ahead of Hall; their styles and approach were completely different. Both employed excellent musicians and both delivered.

So true. Both had excellent groups of musicians, with talent coming out their lugs.

I've heard that the arranger Ben Frankel led an orchestra in 1937

l have often wondered what Jack Payne thought of Henry Hall's effort at the BBC..Payne was an aggressive, edgy individual, and it showed through his wonderful music.Hall was a slightly dour, conservative individual, and it showed though his music. As just wished Payne has stayed at the BBC a bit longer, as to my ears, he was light years ahead of Hall. However it does all boil down to personal opinion.

How can you know the exact day and date for the recordngs?

Recording dates, where known, are listed in British Dance Bands on Record 1911-1945 by Brian Rust and Sandy Forbes. I do my own research to find what day of the week it was.
