No one can do Shades like the Kirov.SUPERB! I went to Russia in 1975, and saw several performances by the Kirov and The Bolshoi. This brought back many sweet memories for me, thank you Lou Lins for posting this.
this is such an amazing recording of Bayadere, Komleva is incredible as Nikiya but my favorite ballerina in her best role Gamzatti is what inspired me to dance.
La Bayadere will forever be my favourite ballet by a long shot. La Bayadere is the definition of ethereal, unlike any other ballet it’s biblical and never fails to bring me to tears, It’s almost like the epitome of what heaven would look like
Actually, there is very little heaven and mostly betrayal, jealousy and murder, high price to pay for that "heaven", don't forget in original version everybody dies in a temple collapse, nothing heavenly about it but that is why I love this ballet, for it's drama and the true love of Solor and Nikiya because his betrayal was forced by the father of Nikiya's rival.
In 1977, the Kirov Ballet's 1941 Ponomarev/Chabukiani production of La Bayadère was filmed and later released onto DVD/video with Gabriella Komleva as Nikiya, Tatiana Terekhova as Gamzatti, and Rejen Abdeyev as Solor.
Somebody did a really BRUTAL job of editing this!! Evidently the music of this ballet isn't even important enough to let each episode come to its complete cadence. Not that it's very good music, but it should all be included.
really, only the russians have drama..... and this is so much better than today's kirov even.. have not seen this for years.... what a relief from all those flinging arms and legs of today
Did yo see Nikolai Tsiskaridze as Solor? He was fantastic. Not today's high jumping machines with no feelings but a sensitive and dramatic, lyrical, confused Solor with beautifl technique and passion .
@@BytomGirl Being the principal of Vaganova Academy, he seems to have a different approach now, because most students that have graduated in recent years resemble more of a gymnast than a ballet dancer. They lack proper turnout, not strong enough, but are insanely flexible. The arms and extensions are nice, but ballet is not all about that.
@@BytomGirl Why? Do you think it’s a put down at gymnastics? They are amazing in their own ways, but ballet is ballet. Yes of course I have seen, and it’s disappointing because the focus has shifted. Soviet dancers, Kirov stars came out of school already strong and stable on stage. Students now have a very different mindset. They seem to be really into developing flexibility and not turnout, which is vital for stage performance. You can take a look at any of these resent graduating exams and tell me that you don’t see students sitting back in plié and closing tendu with soft legs? It’s not about how high you kick your legs. The higher the easier, for flexible dancers. I don’t think that you understand what I mean. You seem to spend all your time on UA-cam.
Interesting fact: they are dancing to recorded music. The footage of the orchestra was edited in. And for whatever reason they used a different backdrop for the Shades scene.
oldoperafan Nikiya's dance, the asp's bite and her death is LEFT OUT. I am grateful to see the great Terekhova and disappointed not to see Komleva's moving portrayal of Nikiya's death.
Can anyone explain to me what is that scene starting at 33:41? Why is Nikia again in the scene? Who is she dancing with? In every plot I read there is no mention to this part, there is only the first scene, the dance by the fire and the encounter with Solor and then scene 2 where Gamzati confronts Nikia and Nikia tries to kill Gamzati. What is this dance inbetween?
Kaleria Fedicheva was a totally unremarkable Kirov dancer of the day who, at the late age of 26 somehow got promoted to soloist, and then principal dancer. Undeservedly, some said. She would speak of of her peer and rival of her time as "that frog, Komleva". Fedicheva was not a very kind person, it would seem.
The name of this dance is Danse Jampé. The dance with the scarf (or rather "veil") is the one daced by Nikya as part of the Pas de Deux in the Scene of "The Shadows"
Why do ballet audiences have to engage in so much interrupting applause? It is very harmful to the flow of the music. Sometimes they even applaud during the dance--that is so annoying. Why can't the audience let the performance continue and applaud at the next curtain? (And as for European rhythmic clapping...that alone would justify Brexit.)

One of the most beautiful Ballets. Thanks for sharing.

Gabriela Komleva = goddess! The most amazing balerina ever to dance at the Kirovs stage.

Not that it's very good music? Really? Music is great as all music of Minkus
This score has cuts and later additions. Minkus' intentions are not always as heard here. The final act also is missing.
Very ,very nice ballet it is pleasure to see it.

BytomGirl Couldn’t agree more, there will never be anything that could compare to Kirovs dancers during this time

I never saw the 1. variation with such speed! Great performance Terekhova🤩and Komleva😍!💥👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼
Why is Nikiya's death left out??
wish someone make that grainy vid into HD digital remaster!
This is extremely classy! With both expression and dance. Too bad that there's not a Nikya's death solo, wtf is up with that?
Where is the whole scene of Nikiya's death?
Interesting fact: they are dancing to recorded music. The footage of the orchestra was edited in. And for whatever reason they used a different backdrop for the Shades scene.
recently l was reading one old italian ballet magazine and there was a report about a SPB mez nikya ,this very serious italian critic was amazed
I ❤️❤️❤️ it
I had to put together three videos to upload it. But I missed one. Soon I´m going to upload fully.
PLEASE EITHER RESTORE THE ENTIRE NIKIYA DANCE BEFORE HER DEATH OR REMOVE THIS VIDEO SO AS NOT TO LURE US HERE EACH TIME.
What I believe is the full one is up today 7 Feb 2014. Be grateful.

My guess this is a 70's movie version from USSR, it is precious to see it although it missed about 8 minutes Nikya dances.
Here's the full version with Nikia's dance ua-cam.com/video/V70luV3RCNU/v-deo.html
excellent performance

Thanks for uploading this masterpiece. Does anyone know the names of the Three Shades?

+Joana Amoroso I think this is the blessing of the veil, a veil for Gamzatti's wedding. I've seen it in other renditions, though it's usually omitted

Questa musica e leggiadra mi commuovono!
el solo de la muerte de Nikiya? 😢
The shades are not together at the entrance.
Terekhova jumps higher than her partner! She hangs in the air longer too.

1:39:24 does anybody hear Grieg's Piano Concerto here?:>
This is sooo funny, just as I read this, there is a Grieg concerto on TV (I love it by the way)
It's Minkus but a couple of notes match up Grieg :)
Regularly. It a classic and one of the best piano works.
who is this abomination Solor?
La musique est stupide , dommage
