I’m afraid your hierarchy of leverage points is backward. To take the example you gave: the Enlightenment arose from structural and economic changes, not the other way around! Women’s lib and the spread of gender egalitarianism also arose structural and economic changes. The idea of gender equality had been around for millennia (Plato, Aristotle, etc.), but it was only when economic constraints pushed women into the workforce that it became possible for it to spread and become the dominant mental model. Now, it is true that in an absolute, totalitarian dictatorship a single’s person’s mental models can cause profound changes. But in oligarchies (like the U.S.) and democracies, it takes communal shifts in mental models to cause changes, and most of the time communal changes are the products of structural, demographic, technological, and economic changes.
Oops, I wrote “Plato, Aristotle, ...” but I meant “Plato, Averroes, ...”. Aristotle thought women were lower beings. Plato and Averroes (a Muslim jurist and philosopher) believed women were intellectually and spiritually the same as men.
@@tantzer6113 If you could dig deeper still into the structural changes allowing for changes in mental models, you might find that the system of credit/debt laden with usury is the ontological restriction to embarking on new models of social relations. If we are always bound by our creditors to follow the dictates of maximizing an inherently scarce token-reward system, then all other choices will be constrained by this fundamental authoritarian value. If our means of cooperating are almost always (in the formal economy, anyway) mediated through a scarce token-reward system, then the modes of cooperating will also be self-limiting, and a series of poor choices to maximize those token rewards will lead us to exploit one another and slowly destroy our ecosystem as we continue to monetize everything. It's a self-reinforcing feedback loop. Usury must end.
