I had this epiphany last month and wrote it to my friend:
"Most Christians claim to love everyone just the way they are. But that's not true. They love you and they want you to change. They want to fix you. That's literally not loving someone for who they are. They love you for what they want you to be."

The fact that her book proceeds go to fight human trafficking reminds me of a phenomenon i uncovered a couple years ago when i was looking for a new job. I was in marketing and i hated what i did. I had worked in Amnesty International before and loved it, so i wanted to return to that type of work. Human trafficking is an area that i've always been very passionate about; it's a worldwide phenomenon that impacts hundreds of millions of people (either directly or indirectly). So, i started searching. This is something not talked about often, but the CHRISTIANS HAVE TAKEN OVER THE ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKING INDUSTRY. Like no joke, if you wanted to apply to a job, they ask if you are "a member of X Church" and then you need a letter from your priest/pastor/church. 9 out of 10 organizations (not an actual number but i'm sure it's close to accurate) are associated with a church. And if you do not belong to one of those denominations, THEY DO NOT WANT YOU! It's such a weird reality. I was dumbfounded. I think I found like 3-4 secular organizations during my entire search. Nothing wrong with a church wanting to fight against human trafficking, but when did Christians become the gatekeepers of this fight? SMH!

Yes!! I have also noticed this!! And they focus so much of their energy on things like outlawing porn, or like running Christian-specific halfway houses for victims of trafficking that tell them that it’s ok, Jesus forgives them for their trauma.

    • @angelawossname

And yet they actively fight to make sure any kind of sex work is illegal, making it 10 times harder for victims to come forward in fear of prosecution. They also fear deportation which far right Christians are very much in favour of, so they fear either being locked up because of sex work or locked up because they are illegal.

Can’t help but wonder if it’s because they want to be able to convert those that they help if they aren’t already their particular brand of Christianity? Or even more insidious then that, only helping those that are their brand of Christianity? Seems odd that they only want people that subscribe to their religion working for them otherwise.

    • @nicholewarren4229

I used to work in violence prevention in the southeast and its basically a way to divert funding from secular community orgs because "there is already an organization getting funding from the state/federal govt in your local area" and they get to control the narrative. The non-religious-based research suggests that MOST human trafficking is for other forms of labor (farm work, domestic service work, construction) and is not just pretty white girls getting sexually exploited. (Not to say that sex trafficking is not an issue!! It just (more commonly in the US) looks like underage marriage (hi fundies!!) and contract violations and wage theft (hi andrew tate!!).)

Also, I didn't know that the "gay bad" part was in Leviticus and I am dying. Not only is there a whole thing later on in the Bible that tells you to disregard Leviticus, that book/chapter is home to such goldies as: eating fat bad, touching unclean animals bad, ripping your clothes bad, drinking in church bad, eating pig/rabbit bad, eating or touching a whole list of bad stuff, going to church within 33/66 days after giving birth to a boy/girl bad, having period sex bad mixing fabrics bad....just so much. Thought that might give you a chuckle. You're great 💜

52:43 - this triggered such a vivid memory for me, jfc.
I also grew up in an evangelical family (and was homeschooled on top of that, so it took a lot longer to realize how fucked everything was), and this reminded me of a messed up incident that happened when I went to a fundie summer camp.
The camp counselors and organizers thought that all the campers - *children* ranging from 8-13 - needed to learn what it felt like to be "religiously persecuted" for being Christian, and we needed to learn how to always "stand up for god". They devised this game that was held at night, with all the outdoor lights turned off across the whole property (and it was a massive compound in the middle of nowhere Canada), and we had to pretend we were in ancient Rome. The camp counselors were Roman soldiers and the kids were all "Christians on the run". We all had to hide and try not to get caught by the counselors (who had massive flashlights while we had nothing), and if we were caught we either had to denounce god or be subject to a "punishment" that could be whatever the counselor decided. And if you put up a lot of resistance, like they encouraged us to, then you'd be dragged to the mess hall where half a dozen counselors would scream about how worthless you are and that you need to give up god, all that jazz. If you didn't, one of the things they did was throw flour in your face. This ended up happening to me and I got flour directly on my eyeball and scratched my cornea. I had to walk myself to the nurse station (alone) and found a bunch of other sobbing kids there and a very pissed off nurse who looked like she regretted taking the job.
The self-righteousness and audacity of people like this author lol. They literally care about nothing other than control and their own inflated egos.

I think I'll see my dogs there." But somehow letting in a gay person is inconceivable?? (I'm not trying to make comparisons between animals and people, and I don't believe in heaven, so to me the admittance qualifications are moot. But even reading it in the early 2000s, I felt Susie's was an incomplete answer.)

I will say (as a queer disabled person) that (at least here in the Netherlands, I can't speak on accessibility in the US) the whole "well there are only so few wheelchair users" is absolutely a thing. There has been some improvement with public spaces lately, but there is still a lot to be done, and when it comes to housing, those on lower incomes can get a benefits supplement, according to your rent and income, which doesn't cover service costs, which includes a lift, making a €800 flat without a lift more affordable than a €500 flat and having to pay €100 for a lift, which is just wild. And you can only get a semi-adapted flat on social housing if you're elderly and fully adapted flats are way too scarce. Anyway, side tangent aside, wow that's fucked up, thank you for putting in this work.

Something that has struck me between this video and the previous videos about Jessie Minassian is her insistence that feminists hate all men, and being raised fundie, I definitely heard constant talk about how I should fear and hate (non-fundie) men. More Christians have told me men are dangerous in my life than anyone else. Growing up, I wasn't allowed to listen to Britney or Christina or any woman expressing her own sexuality, but I was allowed to watch SVU with my parents at age 8 so I could "understand how the world really is."

When you mentioned columbine and Rachel it made me realize something about something that happened in middle school. We had “Rachel’s Story” come to our school and something always really bothered me about them coming to a public school. They traumatized pretty much everyone there and were basically shoving beliefs onto students attending a public school. This was like rural public school in the south. They really had no right to force students to listen to all they said and showed.

So random memory while watching this video.
My mom and I watched dancing with the stars for a brief period of time, and one this I remember DISTINCTLY is how Sadie Robertson was framed on that show (obviously at the direction of her parents) vs how other teens were framed/featured.
Sadie was 17 when she was on the show and they could not stop constantly mentioning her purity/virginity/modesty, all that shit. It was fucking weird and kinda gross and like WHY!?!?
When Bindi Irwin was on as a 17 yr old, none of that was mentioned, ever at all. No mention of sex or sexualizes or rather *not* sexualizing her. 14 year old actress from the hunger games was on, again no mention about what she was or wasn’t doing with her no-no parts. 15 yr old boy? Nope Nothing.
Why is it only the girl from the fundy family is the only one who can’t go an episode without someone (her parents) talking about how she isn’t having sex and has to be modest and don’t sexualize her. I think the hosts would only comment about things like the routine or her outfit being approved by her dad.
I don’t think I’ve ever been more uncomfortable about how a teen girl was being featured in my life. (Except looking back at the way Britney Spears was being treated by the media, but that’s I’m retrospect, this was happening fucking live.)

New sub here and boy does all this raise my hackles, especially "James Dobson." I remember when I was 7 or 8 I found my parents' copy of "Dare to Discipline" and I was fascinated. We were not a fundie family but this was in the early 80s when Focus on the Family had pushed into mainstream spaces, hiding their cultishness behind the popular genres of self-help and family discipline. See, I was a very advanced reader for my age, so I read, and re-read, different parts of that book. Even at such a young age I could tell something was very wrong about advice telling parents to LIE to their child and refuse to have conversations about WHY certain decisions were made, as well as disagreeing with "corporal punishment" aka abuse. I was also insightful enough to recognize my parents might try some of this stuff, so I was going to fight knowledge with knowledge. Whatever they attempted based on Doboson's advice did not last long, at all, which thank all the gods big and little because I'm ADHD and autistic - something not confirmed until I was well into my 30s.
Many thanks to you from a fellow Floridian for speaking out about not just bad authors but about the deep harm fundies do. I can't imagine what it's like knowing you come from experience and I'm sorry you lived that, but I'm grateful for your willingness to tell the truth and speak up about this systemic abuse that goes all the up into the highest branches of power (as we sure know in this state!). All the best to you and yours!

I've been going through all your fundie related videos and it's crazy to see how fundie beliefs/rhetoric is so commonplace for too many Christians. It's really showing me how invasive a lot of it is. My mom forced my sister and I to convert to Catholocism when I was 8 or so, and I slowly watched her, especially as an adult, get more and more fundie-like in her beliefs, which was ironic since a lot of fundies hate on Catholics 😂
She made me read "She Said Yes" about Columbine. She encouraged me to go to Catholic sex education classes, which were very male centric and extremely anti-LGBTQ+ without explicitly supporting conversion therapy (but certainly skirting it). Needless to say, the Catholic faith for me was super traumatic. Toxic in similar and different ways from a lot of fundie faiths.
Authors like this one need a reality check and to stop playing "victim". Christianity has historically been one with a high body count, so like...no. You're not under attack.

The thing that this article prove is how in our society some people, who have privileges, feels entitle to their voices being heard, how they assume that their opinion and belief should be imposed in every spaces, and give that for granted. While other need to beg to exist, let alone have a voice, or a platform to spread it.

Actually protected class status is something that is and should be wanted for the LGBT+ community and is what they have in Canada. The term itself "protected class" might sound weird to an American audience because it's been slandered for 20+ years by conservatives in media, but all it means is a group of people with a demographical identity that requires specific legislation placed into the legal system to prevent their systemic discrimination. The same is true of people with disabilities, discrimination based on race, religion etc. These are all protected classes. CHRISTIANS themselves fall into a protected class status as no one can legally discriminate against them based upon their religion.

So, missionaries, please, stop coming to the Amazon rainforest and leave our Indigenous peoples alone! They are already going through enough with all the illegal miners who are poisoning their water thanks to that Bozo of a president I didn't vote for. If you want to help them, donate money to the many organizations trying to bring them stuff they need, like FOOD.

As if it were a contest, as if Jewish holidays (I know that's not the world but I'm seriously too dumb right now) weren't centered around remembering horrible things that happened, as if no other religion was persecuted, as if no *people* weren't persecuted, the gay (I'm a lesbian) and people of color communities were as "persecuted as them". There's a lot of overlap, but they're not synonymous. Mormons have some pretty specific beliefs. A year old but one of the points made me think about my past self
I used to think that particularly modern feminism was about hating men and all men bad. (I really liked older, usually long dead feminists and would read their stuff) The reason why I thought this was because (1) I was chronically online (2) The people who I saw call themselves feminists, where only ever about hating men and painting all men as monsters
I'm not talking about acknowledging how men hold up patriarchy. It was legit equating rapist as a synonym to men. It was also common for them to argue that men can't be raped or SA'd in any way (even if it's anal) and that it was a woman-specific struggle. (They were also pretty transphobic now that I'm looking back) I watched one use a male commenter's rape story against him (It was child rape btw. They found it by digging through his comment history) and a bunch of other stuff. They would weaponize feminist arguments to defend their misandry. I have no idea if they genuinely thought they were feminists or if they were just using it as a cover
Then I grew up and realized that I was just watching a bunch of arm chair activists weaponize feminism to protect their prejudice. I'm not saying this is her. I was a minor. She's a whole ass adult. There is a good chance she's purposefully misrepresenting it, but that part just made me think of it
So all this to say: If you, fellow viewer, think that feminism is men bad and just about hating men, think about who represents feminism for you and ask yourself if they are really feminists (But doing this honestly also requires not being misogynistic, or at the very least, be willing to see it, acknowledge it, and account for where it might fog your view) Also maybe get off the internet for a bit and watch real life feminists advocating for real change. See what they say and how they act. Don't go in trying to disagree

A quick note: LGBT people do want to be a protected class. The term "protected class" is a legal/constitutional term that is relevant in hate crime and equal employment cases. If you are part of a protected class, it means you can't be fired for that reason. Like you can't be fired for your race, religion, or gender. Sexuality should also be a protected class so that people can't be fired for being queer. "Protected class" doesn't mean special treatment, it just means explicitly identifying a characteristic as something that someone cannot be discriminated against for.
