Went to this show in my home town. Queued outside for 12 hours free to get in as long as you wore a smiths t shirt. Absolute carnage inside when moz came on. No chance of getting anywhere near the front. Many people seemed to cry all the way through it. 35 years ago still remember it very well. Without doubt the most memorable music event I've ever attended.
Wow, seen moz loads of times but this must be a special memory for you. I always wanted to see him sing disappointed after many gigs I finally did. It was so good I bought ticket of a dodgy tout and saw it again the next night!
The guy at 01:15 cracks me up every time, saying, "I love you" to Morrissey and looking at the security guard like, "It's all good, mate, I'm going". So chill lol
I love this. All the people hugging him is so cool...the energy is intense. And I disagree with everyone saying Moz is fat,he still looks fantastic for his age.
You were the best fan, haha! You were like "I just want to give you pat", and when security came you were like "That's ok, no need to kick my ass, I'll leave."
I was at this performance at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall. December 22nd, 1988 is a day that this Yank will never forget until the day he dies. Moz's first performance without Johnny Marr. Joyce and Rourke were still with him at this point, and Craig Gannon from Aztec Camera took the place of Marr for this ONE performance. After that Morrissey fell out with Rourke and Joyce, and the rest is history.
It's great how he just sort of oozes people off him like he's slippery....it must really be maddening to have all these sweaty strangers hugging you while trying to sing...he's a saint!
I heard this gig was for free, all you had to do enter was wearing a Smiths/Moz T-shirt, damn, wish I were at this concert, too bad I was only 5 at that time...
Very true about the security. It's sad, really. Morrissey enjoys the contact, in fact encourages it, pulling fans onstage on occasion. As long as people are respectful and gentle with him, it shouldn't be hindered. haha, it's great that he can keep singing with people hanging off of him.
The reference to a Citreon van could be Morrissey's take on your typical Scaffolder/Bricklayer's mode of transportation. Fantastic song! The funny thing was that at this point Rouke, Joyce and Gannon were in the process of taking Morrissey to court
"Sister I'm A Poet" (lyrics) All over this town Yes, a low wind may blow And I can see through everybo... With no reason To hide these words I feel And no reason To talk about the books I read But still I do That's 'cause I'm a ... Sister I'm a ... All over this town Along this way Outside the prison gates I love the romance of crime And I wonder Does anybody feel the way I do? And is evil just something you are Or something you do? Sister I'm a ... Sister I'm a ... All over this town, All over this town They pull over In their Citroen vans Not to shake your hand With meths on their breaths And you with youth on your side A plastic bag stranded at the lights This once was me ... But now I'm a ... Sister I'm a ... All over this town ... Oh, oh, oh All over this town, All over this town, Oh ... I still cannot speak French ... I am very lazy
I remember seeing MORRISSEY in 1998 at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, California. After about 20 mins of playing a fan rushed him on stage and he said some choice words and left! I guessed it startled him, as we were leaving some people in the crowd were saying that he did that on purpose, and was known to do that from time to time. I was sooo upset as a young 18yr old fan of The Smiths and MOZ. He didn't even play any of his popular classics. Saw him several years later I think it was in 2002 in Las Vegas, now that was a better and fun show!
I seen him in 1995 at Newcastle City Hall U.K the place was jam packed full of Morrissey lookalikes, Seen one of my old school teachers i went over to talk to him and he didn’t remember me.😂
Moz is my greatest hero ever!!!!! I absolutely looooooove him! For me he is the best singer and poet of all times. My is heart is totally of him. Moz I love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the fans.... it scares me to think of how morrissey really had/has complete control over these people, and that they would do whatever he tells them at the drop of a hat. (i still love him, though!)
@420megadeth he left at this point, so technically it was still 'The Smiths' plus playing Morrissey's songs but they'd decided to split, but decided to do a farewell gig - except marr.
Marr is a deity in my eyes, but I'll happily admit that Gannon does a great job here on his own! Must have been intimidating for him. Greatly prefer this version to the single.

Heh, no shit!
Very luck son you are. 😀
CLASS MATE PURE CLASS !
The guy at 01:15 cracks me up every time, saying, "I love you" to Morrissey and looking at the security guard like, "It's all good, mate, I'm going". So chill lol
Same
This fan did the same in the Sweet and Tender Hooligan performance, lol.
is it real or is it staged. He seems completely unfazed by it
Mom AND brothers im a poet
I love this. All the people hugging him is so cool...the energy is intense.
And I disagree with everyone saying Moz is fat,he still looks fantastic for his age.
I was there. Go me. I love the chap at 1:15. Poise.
You were the best fan, haha! You were like "I just want to give you pat", and when security came you were like "That's ok, no need to kick my ass, I'll leave."
That wasn't me.
Sorry. I read that wrong. Anyway, good on you for being there! I'm jealous.
The good times, when a b-side was better that A.
Absolutely! Such an underrated song.
Best b side ever!
Reminds me of the late 80's great time for music. The Smiths were huge
True, but this is Moz without Marr. Gannon is good but not great. Marr is great.
I was at this performance at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

"Sister I'm a poet" and "Come Back to Camden"... Two reasons to be faithful to Morrissey forever...

wow - that is a real piece of musical history to cherish - i was 18 and would have loved to have been there .
Very true about the security. It's sad, really. Morrissey enjoys the contact, in fact encourages it, pulling fans onstage on occasion. As long as people are respectful and gentle with him, it shouldn't be hindered.
haha, it's great that he can keep singing with people hanging off of him.
Utterly fucking glorious.
Back in past from much better times.
It's ALWAYS about the possibility of tragedy and death.....the artistry is everp-resent to remind us of why art exists in the first place....
Love this version of the song.
A F’n Thousand Times better.....🌾🌾🌾
I absolutely agree! I love the sound of that guitar! I miss the Rockabilly Morrissey.
this makes me feel old as that is me reading the news paper when the classical music is playing.what a gig.
The reference to a Citreon van could be Morrissey's take on your typical Scaffolder/Bricklayer's mode of transportation. Fantastic song! The funny thing was that at this point Rouke, Joyce and Gannon were in the process of taking Morrissey to court
One of his best lyrics.
This was his first solo gig , at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
Morrissey has such an amazing, unique voice.
Sir Gannon🙌
Free entry if you wore a Smiths T Shirt(and camped there for three days!!).
I bought that video back in the late 80`s, and I haven´t seen it since then. Great!
''along this way, outside the prison gates, i love the romance of crime''.
My favorite line ♥️
morrissey's stage presence is divine .
Absolutely brilliant. Moz is more than a genius! He is certainly my greatest hero.
Yes, it's out on DVD now as well!
A citroen van, a French make of vehicle. I love this song too.
"Sister I'm A Poet" (lyrics)
All over this town
Yes, a low wind may blow
And I can see through everybo...
With no reason
To hide these words I feel
And no reason

All over this town
Along this way
Outside the prison gates
I love the romance of crime
And I wonder
Does anybody feel the way I do?
And is evil just something you are
Or something you do?
Sister I'm a ... Sister I'm a ...
All over this town,
All over this town
They pull over
In their Citroen vans
Not to shake your hand
With meths on their breaths
And you with youth on your side
A plastic bag stranded at the lights
This once was me ...
But now I'm a ... Sister I'm a ...
All over this town ... Oh, oh, oh
All over this town, All over this town, Oh ...
I still cannot speak French ... I am very lazy
And I can see through everybody's clothes with no reason
..with MINTS on their breaths. Crazy good lyrics.
Thank Mikey
Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce and Craig Gannon all played with morrissey in his early solo career.
Rock! !
I love how Morrissey doesn't give a shit even though the people running on the stage are messing up his singing :D
0:40 He's in heaven ♥
He is. I'm so happy for him.
thanks mikey
damn i couldn't have said it any better.

Hey bro I was there .. Yeah that really sucked ..
I seen him in 1995 at Newcastle City Hall U.K the place was jam packed full of Morrissey lookalikes, Seen one of my old school teachers i went over to talk to him and he didn’t remember me.😂

The man is flawless, physically
Moz is my greatest hero ever!!!!! I absolutely looooooove him! For me he is the best singer and poet of all times. My is heart is totally of him. Moz I love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@theaceofspades56 Wolverhampton Civic Hall. IIRC you had to wear either a Smiths or Morrissey T-Shirt to gain entrance..
@blprrt No it's Morrissey's first solo gig with Craig Gannon AKA the 5th Smith playing guitar.
That is a brilliant video.
MORRISSEY YOUR THE BEST!
Moz at his best! ❤
Thanks Mikey
Surely someone should release this on DVD? Rather than yet another 'Best of'
omg! I LOVE that part of the video, such a fantastic image. Lucky guy! (as are you!!)
lol at how this is apparently normal crowd behaviour. Nice one Mikey i finally get Venom (shamefully i suppose)
cant wait to see him in concert tomarow in pomona fox.
the devotion is awesome
last second: everyday is like sunday video beginning
Great performance! I always thought the last Smiths gig was on 12-12-86? Marr had left the group by this this show.
Awesome, glad you all like it.
the fans....
it scares me to think of how morrissey really had/has complete control over these people, and that they would do whatever he tells them at the drop of a hat.
(i still love him, though!)
Moz, I love you!!!!!!!!!
Hulmerist !
Morrisey.... :) FTW
Stuff of legends!
@420megadeth he left at this point, so technically it was still 'The Smiths' plus playing Morrissey's songs but they'd decided to split, but decided to do a farewell gig - except marr.
Back to the days when he was the messiah!
So, could they have carried on as The Smiths with Gannon as the sole guitarist and composer?
Wait..... Is that Andy Rourke on bass? I swear he wasn't part of Morrissey's solo setup
Mike
Joyce on drums as well 👍
Andy and Mike played and recorded with Moz a lot in the early days.
hello, does anyone know the source of this Carmen opera recording? i've heard it sung before but not this perfect. thanks : )
I'm going, too!
The guy at 1.16 has my respect did it in a great manner.
Love this so much
Me encanta, que sensualidad..
I could be wrong but I think Stephen Street did the bass in the studio version. Although I agree.
I love you Moz
Love is a canary without a cause 🤗
I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE HIM A HUG TOO ^^
he loves it really :-)
I had the VHS of this
Grandeeee Morrissey
Marr is a deity in my eyes, but I'll happily admit that Gannon does a great job here on his own! Must have been intimidating for him. Greatly prefer this version to the single.
観る度に思うけど、凄すぎる。
モリッシー愛されてるなぁ。
I've been tricked again into being somewhere I wasn't meant to be, (although I was), at the right time in the right place 😊
is evil just something u r? or something you do?
L'amour est enfant de boheme qui n'a jamais connu de loi...
I would give anything to hang from Mozzer in concert
He had to wrestle a few of those guys of him LOL
apparently it's about the play / film - "The Glass Menagerie" by tennessee wiliams
21 years ago today.
so very old now.
Guitar work here is better than the most recent version with Boz or Alain respectively.
Moz is like a gay fly trap lol
i will be on the balcony rails.
1:50 - 1:53. amazing.
OH MY GOD.
I totally just saw my gay uncle hug morrisseyin this, wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwtf
