"Alright, we're here, just sitting in the car. I want you to show me if you can get far...STEP ON THE GAS....step on the gas.....STEP ON THE BRAKE....step on the brake!!."
I'm in a computer lab writing a term paper. Thought I would listen to some CAN while I worked (just discovered the band a few months ago.) I just now stumbled across this song and I have now listened to it at least ten times in a row. Jesus, I need to get back to work.
❤ your comment, but check this out when I started listening to Ken there wasn’t a single home with a computer in it the handheld calculator was not even available for less than yeah several hundred dollars
@jackamo23 Thanks, I actually was the one who edited it. I felt this song deserved a video, especially since it does seem like at an attempt to sneak into the charts.
@2:46, when the lead guitar pops in and the bassline immediately starts moving around in unpredictable ways as it all hits the fadeout - that's gotta be one of the most perplexingly moving and joyous moments I've ever heard on a record, up there with Exile On Main St's best moments!
This is the music to Stage 2 of PaRappa the Rapper, where Instructor Mooselini teaches PaRappa how to drive to get his driver’s license. The backing beat of the song has been noted to have a stark resemblance to German/Japanese krautrock band Can’s “Turtles Have Short Legs”, released in 1971. It could serve as either inspiration or a homage to the song.
proves again that great bands need great clubhouses/hangouts/rehearsal space. i blieve this is their cologne castle set up. like the Band '69 digs or The Clash's in '79 this was a major music commune. kinda of poppy,1st time i heard it. luv em.
@kristoscan Actually this video has both of their hangouts/studio spaces. Most of it was in the castle, although some of the in studio footage (the scenes where the studio is soundproofed by old mattresses on the walls) was in their second hangout/studio in a converted cinema in Weilerswist that they moved to in late 1971.
yeah... in the late '60s, stereo equipment was a novelty and most home systems were small so the novelty of having a voice coming entirely from one channel was hip. In the 70s it started getting into really imaging a soundfield more.

If you can find on original vinyl with grooves still intact, listen to Sgt Pepper, Ummagumma, Bookends, Abbey Road - good examples of late 60s stereo recording. Shame that Hendrix wasn't engineered better in the studio.
It's 1971, that's the way things were mixed back then. It was even worse on 60's recordings. I wouldn't really call in mono, though. It was pretty common on rock and jazz albums in those days to have certain instruments, if not all of them relegated to one channel or the other. By '71 is was becoming more common to have full stereo centered recordings, although there were still a few tracks out there mixed this way.
the 50th anniversary stereo mix of ‘whiter shade of pale’ blew my mind... there was a piano there? funny thing is, i prefer the mono am mix as that’s the one i’ve always known...
