I sorted this by using the centre ring of the old black diaphragm washer from the fill valve

This is not the proper way, it has a button which goes with the washer to seal the water.

Yeah that button somehow got lost when the thing broke. It works like this since then but at this point it's better to replace the whole water inlet.
