yep, those who preordered saved 30%, those that didn't saved 100% as I doubt many people will upgrade from 20 to 21 after seeing what the product actually is.
@@Sylvain_Hebon this is true! Maybe they won’t have enough people upgrade, and either give us an enticing feature upgrade or charge more for those that are coming from 20 to 22.
I've recently switched to Fuji and am definitely C1 curious. However. I am a fan of LR mobile. Could you please have a look at mobile phone based software that compliments C1? Love your work.
I also shoot Fuji (GFX): you will appreciate the image quality compared to Lightroom, especially on high iso and concerning noise. I went completely C1 because of this.
Nice additions that would be a sub release for a major version. But in todays age companies charge more for less. The keystone correction is still outdated when compared to LR one, Image import still can’t have multiple folders selected, but you need to go through the “exclude duplicates” with sub folders (yes this is not new, this exists since at least Version 7), no panorama stitching, no side panel for color selection for guidelines (like there is for grid), etc, etc, etc, etc, It costs here 18,000 yen upgrade, 2000 yen more than the last version that actually had some stuff worth to upgrade. What did C1 do the whole time? Add button overlays for tutorials?
Got a Leica Q2M and realised that Luminar does not support monochrome. As I have light room mobile only, I got noe Capture One, a bit tedious in the beginning, but man it is good
I just switched over to Capture One from Lightroom. For me it was important that I could buy the license outright, I didn’t want to do a subscription. Looking forward to learning more about the software!
I did that with 12. Then when 20 came out, they made me buy it. No free upgrade for the minor update. Same as 21. I bought DXO and love that program. Best color and noise reduction. I still have LR. You also get PS which has the most tools in the business for only 10 month. You can build custom ICC profiles to tweak any color for any camera. C1 is overpriced for what little you get. Dehaze new tool still needs work. I fell for the hype years ago.
Thank you for the great review. But the message from Phase One was: "Trust us and invest in the new version. You will not be disappointed." Oh, I am very disappointed. Trusted them and paid for the upgrade without knowing the new features and they pay back with an unjustified upgrade that took them a year to add a Dehaze tool and a couple of features!
I found your explanation for speed editing helpful. Thanks. I'm super excited about this feature since you can also adjust the sliders with the arrow keys which is helpful for me because I try to avoid using the mouse to mitigate wrist pain.
I moved to Capture 1 12. I have not touched another raw file editing system since. The degree of freedom in image adjustment on Capture 1 is excellent. I also agree that its colour management is outstanding.
Ted: You asked for ideas for your follow up video on your editing in C1. Here's one: Contrast: How to apply, how much, etc. and the difference in applying contrast via the various options, C1 is offering - i.e. Tone Curve, Contrast Slider, Levels tool, HDR sliders, color balance. Thanks!
The new dehaze filter is great - I already used it on some images and it's much faster than using previous methods to achieve the same results. I also love the speed edit (will have to get used to it and first of all remember to use it, though ...). It will make editing much faster indeed, especially when assigning the shortcuts to the knobs on a Wacom tablet. The price for the pre-order update was quite appropriate for the new features IMHO, less than a one-year subscription of LR.
I’m with you 100%. C1 is my favorite by a mile and I’ve tried just about everything. 21 gets it right - very useful upgrades without the program all of a sudden being something it wasn’t.
They are minor updates at the cost of a full program for 349. Way overpriced. DXO is a much better program. Better colors and best noise reduction in the business.
I've been on and off using C1 for a couple of years now. But this latest release, has me gravitating to perhaps full time. These new features are very welcomed additions to an already awesome software application. I just wish they had some level of cloud and mobile integration like Lr. Other than that its pretty perfect! I'm looking forward to editing my Sony files with the new ProStandard profiles. That could be a game changer for Sony users!
Hey, this was very much appreciated! Just upgraded yesterday so the color profile tips are very welcome :-) Indeed good news that the Leica SL2 is now supported for tethering: that's now looking a lot better as a second body option for my Leica M system. For your next video on C1: I'd love to see how you edit the skin tones, as I saw that's a separate tab now. I messed around with it but I could use some pointers!
I'm guessing Fujifilm won't get Pro Standard. I would think it's counter intuitive to the film simulations. C1 does a really good job with simulations, but one day I hope for a closer 1 to 1 copy of the Fujifilm X Raw Processer.
Good that you mentioned « paid product placement », because otherwise I would seriously have started to doubt your impartiality. This so-called « upgrade » brings nothing. Dehaze is hazardous at best, Quick Edit is just another keymapping...
I now have a user style that just has the Base Characteristic checked and sets it to ProStandard and then I apply that user style on import = all pcitures comes in with ProStandard. Also, i like the Speed edit feature. I bought C1 20 recently enough to get 21 as a free upgrade, I'd struggle to justify forking out for just these new features as much as I enjoy them. Hopefully we get a bigger jump in features next year.
Great informative video. I started using Capture One about 6 months ago and absolutely love it. One problem. An update a few months ago totally broke the Edit With workflow (Capture One acknowledged this). I use this a lot, so had to roll back. Has this been fixed? I would like to upgrade but this is a deal breaker
I haven't upgraded yet, but the speed edit might just do it for me, plus I love how Capture One renders Fuji files, so much nicer than Lightroom. Nice Video
Nice round up of the new features, thanks. I think you made couple of small mistakes in your explanation though. 1. The ability to make additional back-up during import has been in CO at least from version 8. 2. Prostandard can be selected by default for the supported cameras, if you change some settings according to the people at Phase one. 3. Raw image is not really raw data. If it would be, there wouldn't be any discussion about "colour science" of different manufacturers (at least from those that use same sensors like Nikon and Sony). There are also some little things like the Sony "star eater" that are baked in the raw images and some manufacturers let you choose the size of the raw image which is not possible using only raw data. So basically you will never see the raw colour and tone data from the sensor. I know... I'm knit picking :)
Hello Ted, thanks for your tutorial about Capture One 21. Could you please tell us what gear (camera, lens) are you using for filming yourself in this one?
as just a hobbyist with no pretensions I hesitate to upgrade - I bought Lightroom twice before it became a mortgage contract. The Express version of C1 has all the basic edit and export functions and works quite well.
It seems like there is no info on importing images "from your Fujifilm camera to Capture One"... Software recognizing a Fuji camera is actually plugged into your Macbook?
Fantastic new features, many thanks. It is frustrating not to be able to use this powerful software with Nikon Z6ii RAW files. I wonder when they will add Z6ii and Z7ii to CO 21.
Love Capture 1 but this is so incremental that it does not seem worth the cost or the added effort of learning more. I would say the most compelling reason to upgrade is if Capture One added the ability to use my iPad to mirror my computer or have some form of editing from the iPad. I know they have the basic tools for rating photos which is helpful but adding some of the basic edits that you start out with would be great I spend a long day on a computer for other work so an alternative for editing would be a big sell. I also think selecting a slider and then moving over the image area and holding down a button and sliding left or right using that area as the basis would really be cool. A better form of cataloging would be great to. I also need to move files from one directory to another but the catalog loses them. Having the directory up in capture one and then another window for moving within capture one would be awesome as it would know where the files moved to. Right now I have to import all of the photos into a library and then move the files so that they do not get lost. Another great option would be able to use the Apple Photo as a library. I realize I only import photos from the iPhone to that library but being able to edit from Capture one would be a game changer and might bring in more users.
Dehaze tool needs a lot of work. Still way overpriced for a Canon user as they make you buy the whole camera package. Fuji, Sony, Nikon are half priced. Canon R6 colors are still far off. I use LR and DXO. Dxo is by far my favorite. Best colors and noise reduction by far!
@@ryanb8736 I see your point on pricing for Canon. I used to shoot Canon, but now mostly Fuji and Leica, so I need the full version anyway. Only use DXO's Nik collection, so I don't have any other experience with their SW. I believe we have slightly different workflows, but as long as we're all happy it's fine, right?
@Tom Geldon This is what most audio engineers do for their recording studios - dedicated computers that have stable hardware and software that never gets updated. These computers are never connected to the internet so security patches are never needed. With a business, you simply cannot risk being out of work because an update broke your ability to work, and OS updates notoriously cause audio software major compatibility issues. However, what this also means is that nothing can change in either hardware or software, which, for most digital photographers, isn’t something they can live with - no new cameras, a dedicated computer not connected to the internet, etc. The constant upgrade cycle in our lives, whether that be our cell phones, our computers, our cameras, our OS or editing software, is annoying. But, it’s impossible to avoid unless you are truly ok with working with outdated technology. Unlike Adobe however, at least C1 gives people choices. Don’t find enough that you need or want in the new update? Ok, don’t buy it. I do agree that C1 should have been up front about what was in 21 when asking people to make their buying decision to receive the preorder discount. As to whether the cost is worth it or not depends completely on the user and everyone has different things that are important to them. I couldn’t care less if it has a panorama stitcher or not, for example, as an individual above commented was very important to them. I’d love a ProStandard profile for the Ricoh GR III (and my Fuji cameras), but also accept that it isn’t important for Canon, Nikon, etc shooters and C1 has to prioritize what features will benefit most of its users first.
Capture One missed the boat here. Yes, the upgrades are nice, but the items that would make it "perfect" are missing. These include: (1) a more seamless upgrade rather than acting as a new install: (2) Focus stacking. There is a 3rd party plugin for this, but why not include it? (3) The ability to do panoramas. The easiest fix is to use Affinity Photo - which is relatively inexpensive - for items 2 and 3.
When creating your notes on your image to send to a retoucher are you able to use the keyboard to type or do you still have to hand write on the image with a mouse or tablet stylus?
After the latest patches in Photoshop and Lightroom that made CameraRaw unusable, I decided to give C1 a try, and oh my god it blows LR out of the water. The color handling is simply superior, no ifs and buts. I was able to get better results from my editing in 2 weeks than what I got from LR in 2 years.
I just noticed that the Nikon D800 isn't listed. The D810 is, but not the D800, which I'm still using. I guess I'll not be using Capture One for awhile, unfortunately.
I can't even get my trial key to validate. C1's automatic validation system fails due to DNS error. The Knowledge Base links C1 direct you to are broken. C1's laggard tech support, the main reason I gave up on C1 before, still still fails.
Ironically the main reason to upgrade from 20 to 21 is to get round the disastrous clone and stamp crash issues. Lost so much time in the last few months when all the thumbnails refused to load in focus having to restart the whole program, I won’t miss that. 😏
Sounds like 21 is evolution rather than revolution, but some pleasing updates - I use Capture One exclusively for it's RAW capabilities as it's just so superior in my opinion (I shoot fuji). I also use Lightroom, their bundle with Photoshop & other Creative Cloud software is hard to resist, plus I like their cloud storage - must say that editing an image in lightroom is (again, in my opinion) a more intuitive and pleasant experience - however - image quality is the most important thing, so I will keep my clunky workflow between the two. I would not be mad if Adobe acquired Capture One... ! Thanks for the tour!
I'm guessing things have changed since my Nikon D2X and Nikon software Capture NX2 and Nikon Capture 4 and Lightroom, version 2, I think were new. Still have the software and Adobe Creative Suite 4, but not the camera. Gave it to a relative. Don't do much photography now, but every now and then I think I would like to build on my knowledge base. I am wondering if you give training lessons on site. I live in the local area and would love to learn more about photography. Maybe after the virus is dead, we can explore the possibility. In the meantime, you produce excellent videos and your knowledge base is phenomenal.
I have not been able to even use it due to terrible or rather no support. They say they have sent an email, but I never get. The one time I did get a response, it was absolutely worthless. I see I am not the only one who has experienced this from reviews.
New feature review could fit in a 2 min video. Capture One is great, I'd recommend it to new users. These new features for Capture One 20 owners are a nice addition, but the upgrade price is simply out of line with reality. Speed edit is a good idea but with the shortcuts that are pretty standard stuff, it feels like a minor update allowing the flexibility to adjust with the mouse or other modifier key which should have been integrated a long time ago. I was already adapting a MIDI controller and some "middleware" software to get some of that loupedeck kind of functionality out if it that C1 didn't think to do themself....until now and they are charging an arm and a leg for current users to get it. Best RAW software on the market, they just need to treat current customers better with the upgrade pricing model. I can either buy an upgrade to C1 or buy the flagship program of basically all the competitors (and pocket some money).
Not trolling. Just not the “upgrade” I expect from Capture One. I’m guessing they needed money to cover for the covid year. Still a good product. Just wished I wouldn’t have been suckered into pre-upgrading. My loyalty cost me.
Almost all are convenience upgrades, not image upgrades. Exactly one new feature (Dehaze) that enables a person to make better pictures. And Capture One already taught its customers how to do Dehaze manually, so even that's only a convenience upgrade. I'm very disappointed.

As I have light room mobile only, I got noe Capture One, a bit tedious in the beginning, but man it is good
Thanks Ted. Really excited for the dehaze feature. I often battled doing this manually. Which was good, cause it forced me to learn.
Love your tutorial on C1, please keep them coming, C1 RULES!
DXO is much better. At half the price.
Not to much changed compared to C1 20.
HAZE should be a standard lol very poor update
@@FitzMichael yea this us is not worth licence upgrade. Overall LR cought up with colorgrade changes this year.
@@FitzMichael Capture one has always been focused on studio work but us landscape photographers want a landscape editor in Capture Ones workflow.
@@humansrants1694 In landscape photography, I do most (90%+) of the work in C1. For the rest I use Affinity Photo.
Thanks!
Thank you Ted for sharing this information and your insights about this new release. Best wishes Stephen
So many good quality of life updates! Love it!
You need to add a radious slider to the clarity slider in order to avoid only having 3 types from where to select to.
Will you be doing a Capture One 22 video this year as the release is next week (Dec. 9, 2021)?
I’m with you 100%. C1 is my favorite by a mile and I’ve tried just about everything. 21 gets it right - very useful upgrades without the program all of a sudden being something it wasn’t.
They are minor updates at the cost of a full program for 349. Way overpriced.
DXO is a much better program. Better colors and best noise reduction in the business.
@@ryanb8736 I have DXO, but prefer C1. DXO is useless if the cameras you shoot include Fuji.
EXCELLENT TEACHING SKILLS! BRAVO!!
Great info, I got a lot out of this video, thank you!
all that for that price?
Good that you mentioned « paid product placement », because otherwise I would seriously have started to doubt your impartiality. This so-called « upgrade » brings nothing. Dehaze is hazardous at best, Quick Edit is just another keymapping...
Has CO21 addressed any of the problems with using plugins? I would prefer they fixed existing issues before introducing new features.
You knew C21 would be shit when they were asking for preorders without announcing any new features
Is it possible to merge 'n' different images? To do things like multiple exposures or exposure blending?
Capture One is a Raw image processor, what you’re talking about would be more suited to Photoshop or some other related image editing software
as just a hobbyist with no pretensions I hesitate to upgrade - I bought Lightroom twice before it became a mortgage contract. The Express version of C1 has all the basic edit and export functions and works quite well.
If you’re looking for a budget editor get ACDSEE. Many more tools at a fraction of the cost.
As a left-handed person I'd have to re-assign all these shortcuts or do that weird reach across the keyboard maneuver
How about geo-tagging, an auto straighten tool would have been nice. Thanks for the Dehaze finally.
Thanks Ted. Since you called out the duplicate removal in import, has that been improved? It's been there for ages but was so slow it was unusable.
Minor changes. Will stick with C1 20.
Great video Ted!
Sorry, this is a joke, a bad one, from Capture one.
How so? I really like the improvements so far....
@@Joamonica Well, I'm quite happy with this version, but obviously your mileage varies.
Is this app alternative to Lightroom and Photoshop ?
Or only Lightroom?
Will C1 21 support the new Apple Raw? I sure hope so. Obviously 14.3 isn’t out yet. Maybe when it comes out Capture One will have an announcement too.
Just watching this and directly below the video TRY LIGHTROOM FREE TRIAL it remaids me of Windows Explorer beging me can I be your default browser?
Do you use C1 only or do you have a lightroom to c1 workflow?
Thank you for the update Ted! Slight typo where you have the link for the *trial version.
Can we create profile from xrite color checker passport? Also, are there any cons switching from adobe lightroom+photoshop?
I just noticed that the Nikon D800 isn't listed. The D810 is, but not the D800, which I'm still using. I guess I'll not be using Capture One for awhile, unfortunately.
I can't even get my trial key to validate. C1's automatic validation system fails due to DNS error. The Knowledge Base links C1 direct you to are broken. C1's laggard tech support, the main reason I gave up on C1 before, still still fails.
What the point supporting import of HEIF without supporting export? Plus only 8 bit. Yet another version missing customers requests
Great review. Thank you.
Exactly what I needed to see
very good video , thanks
Five new features for 169 EUR here. The greates rip off in Software history. :D
How do you get the tool panels so small? I’ve got a 27” 4K monitor and I can barely get 3 or 4 tools to show without scrolling
How come the dehaze tool is not available for mine? I've updated to 14.0., but I can't find the dehaze tool. weird
My issue with capture one is why there is no text. Cannot add any writing on the image.
Pro standard colors are not good. Still need work.
Ironically the main reason to upgrade from 20 to 21 is to get round the disastrous clone and stamp crash issues.
Lost so much time in the last few months when all the thumbnails refused to load in focus having to restart the whole program, I won’t miss that.
😏
Ted, in the latest version of capture one is there a facility to introduce a watermark when exporting photo to a jpeg file?
hi all! any thoughts and feedback on the combo macbook pro m1 16 gb and capture one pro?
Hopefully not.
In the meantime, you produce excellent videos and your knowledge base is phenomenal.
why they took away sony a7riv tethering feature on capture one pro21,
I have not been able to even use it due to terrible or rather no support.
