Raila Odinga threatens to drop AUC chairman bid

Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Sunday threatened to drop his African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson bid.
He said earlier on Sunday that should the quest to gain political stability in Kenya not be fruitful, he would drop out of the race to chair the continental body.
This as the country is reels from recent protests that resulted in more than 50 deaths since mid-June and left the country's President William Ruto caught between pressure from lenders to pay down high debts and a public reeling from high living costs.
The protest led to a subsequent mass firing of some cabinet ministers, some of whom were later reinstated.
The mass firing last week was a concession to demands from youth-led protests that had already forced him to withdraw $2.7 billion in proposed tax hikes.
