    I don’t own a Gewehr 98 Myself but I own a Persian Mauser 98/29, which is basically the exact same thing besides just two changes that I can think of, such as the sights and the Slack Take-up sling swivel. other than that, I have the full experience with this rifle as you do your own. I absolutely love the Mauser 98 system and especially in its full length design because you better high velocity’s and better pin point accuracy with the sights.
    What I personally know about the Mauser 98 bolt system is that everything’s was insanely well thought out and it didn’t come without a motive. Men were getting seriously hurt or straight up dying over catastrophic failures that had nothing to do with the shooter but rather the design of their weapons or their ammunition but regardless, Paul Mauser innovated ways to protect the shooter from either problem by improving his own weapons. There are so many changed to the rifle than what you described and believe me, none of them are for decoration.
    The third locking lug in the back doesn’t support the locking system itself but what it does prevent the bolt from flying back at the shooters face in case the front lugs sheer and fail. there’s also gas ports in the bolt that direct the hot gases from the event of a casing failure. if you noticed between the Gewehr 98 and your Swedish Mauser, there’s a shield in front of the bolt sleeve (the part that holds the firing pin assembly) that directs hot gases straight upwards in case of a breach failure. Lastly, there’s the reinforced locking Collar where the bolt closes, nobody explained why Mauser reinforced the Collar even though the system is already strong enough but I believe I know why. they reinforced the Collar to ensure that if anything incredibly catastrophic happened like a over charged round or a squib accident, that the whole system would be able to do its job without having a standard Collar blow up or grenade on the shooter.
    The Mauser 98 system is beyond genius and it’s too bad that most of its safety features were forgotten because gun companies get over competent that their weapons won’t fail on their consumers. I’ve seen a couple shooters get hurt (Kentucky Ballistics is one of them) by weapons that didn’t have even half the safety systems that the Mauser has and it annoys me that we repeat history again.

    I think probably the most realistic depiction of the gewehr 98 and WW1 in general is Verdun. I’ve played that game a lot and I’m amazed at how close to history and accurate that game is. It even got the sights on the Gewehr 98 right unlike battlefield. It’s a shame it’s a very underrated game especially since it’s very well made.

    The only thing I think you missed, is about two different bayonets of this rifle.
    One of them is a wide, but shorter one (butcher blade) which has a story behind it. Paul Baumer (Erich Maria Remarque) says if the allies were able to capture a german soldier with butcher blade bayonet, they were going to cut his nose and ears and blinding him with his own bayonet. And then, they fill his mouth and nose with mud, grass and etc, only for him to be choked and killed painfully😢😢😥😥😨😨

  • @brandonmorel2658
    @brandonmorel2658 3 роки тому +1

    The Gewehr 98 in this game is really a work of art. I have 8000 kills with the infantry variant and its really damn good, it just goes to show how much though DICE put for players in this game, and they ruined all of this in BFV with small ass and accurate renditions of iron sights, which is stupid, try to shoot with small iron sights that blend in with the background, its impossible. I deleted BFV yesterday because of how much nostalgia of better times the game was giving me. I dont know if BF2042 is going to be better, the matter with the specialists and cosmetic shit is so unbecoming of what Battlefield really is and I'm getting worried about that but maybe it is the Battlefield game fans have been waiting for, I don't know. What do you think, Echidna?

    • @geoechidna
      @geoechidna  3 роки тому

      BFV was pretty much equally inaccurate regarding representation of iron sights tbh. I think what makes BFV's aiming harder is restricting your zoom with irons to like 1.5 or so; in BF1 you can have 2x zoom.
      Honestly I'm pretty stoked about BF 2042. BFV was pretty much 50/50 disappointing/awesome and I was never as hostile towards it as some people in the fanbase were despite its glaring issues. I'm not even a big "modern war" game guy but the trailer for 2042 looks totally sick.
      I have faith this one will be good. DICE had more time to work on it and its avoiding needless dumb controversies this time around. It's pretty much #1 on my most hyped-for games list.

    • @brandonmorel2658
      @brandonmorel2658 3 роки тому

      @@geoechidna I'm kind of hyped for 2042, DICE ditching the semi serious feel of the last 2 games and embracing the Michael Bay antics is a fresh move and pairs well with the the Only In Battlefield moments the franchise known for. It will possibly be good and all, there are this things that sound really bad, like seasons and battle passes, which is just another excuse for them to not release substantial content like maps for long periods of time, like in BFV, and monetize a 60 dollar while exploiting the guys that buy it. The other thing that sounds weird to me is how they are taking out the class system and replacing it with specialist who have perks that make specific gadgets more viable, I dont know about that. We will see when the game releases.

    • @geoechidna
      @geoechidna  3 роки тому

      Yeah I’m not too hot on the class system either, but maybe it’ll be fine.

    I’m curious if you would prefer a more realistic kind of game. That is, one with crappy sights on a rifle like this, that gets caught up easily, recoils like a mule kick and can’t be shot with any sort of accuracy from a standing position.
    Part of my brain likes the idea but I can’t help but think it would be unbearable unless it was literally the next Soulsborne game.

    • @geoechidna
      @geoechidna  4 роки тому +3

      Haha I might complain a lot but I already know I wouldn't enjoy a "realistic" game more than BF1.
      I've seen footage of Verdun and have played Hell Let Loose, and while I won't knock the quality of that game I personally find it to be infuriatingly fucking hard. I can only die so many times in 30 minutes before I leave the game in frustration.
      I personally really, REALLY like the semi-realistic mechanics in BF1. They're like the perfect mix of arcadey fun and realistic. Even BFV didn't get it quite right IMO.

    The roller coaster sight is good looking and unique for Gew 98 but a downside for the real combat use. The Verdun/Tannenberg Gew 98 is more realistic. I personally hate the rear sight of the Gew 98, Although it is really beautifully made.
    I have a Danzig Gew 98 in collection. It is one of my best looking and well made Mil Surplus.
    But If I have to pick up a bolt action to WW1 battlefield. My first choice would still be the SMLE, and then the Arisaka T38, after that would be Springfield. The Gew 98 would only be lying in front of the Mosin and Lebel.

    • @geoechidna
      @geoechidna  5 місяців тому

      Yeah the 98 pattern sights tend to be mediocre. Even a U-notch with post is a thousand times better than the V-notch and front blade.

    As a gun nut ;) . 6:51 The animations are not that good and accurate. If you go to 6:51 slow the video at 0.25 speed. Crearly you can see when chycling the bolt he does not pull the bolt all the way backwards. Irl. if you do that empty caseing will not eject and new round cant be picked up. Even that you can see at the animation he pulls the bolt backwards but he doesn't pull it all the way and you can se the round not ejecting,and he rechambers that same not ejected round in the barrel. Thats for bolt cycle animation. For empty reload 7:07 animation he pulls the bolt all the way back thanks to god. But when entering the clip with 5 rounds you can see the 6th round poping out the magazine of the gun. And he puts a clip of 5 rounds over that 6rh round. Animation according to me is bad made i more like to use m1903 in the game becouse it haves better animations.
