      @@alexpalmer776 Part of it is because if the government workers do do their jobs then people will attack them saying they are taking the kids away from the parents as they did with the stolen generation. Where the shelters are? well there is substantial free/cheap government housing in Alice, but never enough because they get trashed and it takes months to fix them up again, so effectively they are homeless for much of the year. And if they try prevent them from being trashed by clamping down on booze/drugs, again they get accused of being racist. As for the police they can't really do much, most of the crimes are being committed by underage kids where you can't even take them to juvy, so they get released and keep doing it. Then at some point they inevitably get knocked up and the cycle continues.

    It's admirable the way Avi and Rukshan collaborated on this assignment. At first I thought they would do a hit and run piece just to score brownie points as most news crews do. Except Avi and Rukshan stuck around to give everyone a fair go of having their say. Having lived in Aboriginal communities for over thirty years their approach is so refreshing.
    Maybe Townsville which has a massive crime problem along the same lines as the Alice, would benefit greatly from their work ethics with which they approach journalism with. The crime rate is due to too many kids, insufficient parenting supervision, issues in sentencing along with a highly trouble juvenile Detention Centres and of course the Policing element. Everything they have covered in the Alice, is alive and thriving in Townsville.
    It doesn't matter how much the people try getting the problems sorted, all that is achieved is a period of a slightly lower crime rate as a result of the repercussions from the last Police Operation. Once those arrests have been processed the same vicious cycle starts all over again.
    Watching their reports on the troubles in Alice Springs highlights that something is a miss as Townsville has the same problems and we are a much larger community. Both the Territory and Queensland has Labour in power currently but not always and it appears at least in Townsville that its not solely the reason behind the problem of which Party is in power.
    That leads me to agree with others that the problem is generated by the Courts and Sentencing combined with Detention, which then flows into the custody component that is doing nothing to resolve the issues while in custody. It's a never ending cycle that appears to be doing nothing towards breaking the crimes/arrest/court/detention cycle. As an Australian born caucasian who first started living in Aboriginal laced communities, I have watched this issue bubbling away since 1974. Nothing has changed over this period of time, except the addictions of choice, is that the problem? Will we ever be able too improve and stop this never ending cycle?

    • @joshuadalton6063
      @joshuadalton6063 Рік тому +3

      Sociologists the world over have been grappling with this problem for a long time, and especially in the US which has the same cycle. All sorts of interventions have been tried and nothing works because none of them address the underlying issue which is the breakdown of the family and the community. I don't see anything working apart from what works in general for addiction, that is: you remove the addict from the environment, you treat the addiction, you teach the skills to cope with the urge, then you put them back into a new environment. We do the same with criminal offenders, or at least in theory it should be a pattern of remove from society, rehabilitate them, then put them back in a new environment where they don't reoffend.
      I don't see anything working short of taking all the Aboriginals and putting them in a controlled community to recover from the addictions and rebuild their community and educate and instill virtues and then put them back in the wider community. It isn't even about race, you can see the same problems in the US with "white trash" trailer parks or in the UK with white football gang communities, its all just fatherless homes, addictions, violence and crime and prison in a cycle that never ends.

    • @Lyn4817
      @Lyn4817 Рік тому +2

      @@joshuadalton6063 You have a valid point. After rehabilitation you return them to a new (meaning different) community. That is the element that isn't happening because our criminals are kids, all under age. They know their rights and that the law can't really harm them in any way. In Detention they are simply learning how to improve their criminal skills and broadening their network contacts. I do feel the issue in Norther Australia is different to the southern state and in particular too America BLM issues.
      Their latest crime for kicks is using a stolen vehicle to then go up against a couple of Police vehicles and side swiping them. They very carefully ensured they were only doing body panel harm to the vehicles. The Police Officers chose or were ordered (?) to withdraw as they didn't want the offenders to get hurt and the damage in dollar value to their vehicles was escalating. I am just hoping the kids don't know why the Police withdrew as it will become their next nightly ritual for entertainment. Our criminals start at about ten years old and up too just before they turn 18, which is the legal age of having adult rights. Meaning being charged as adults with harsher penalties with less cushy benefits.

    If we are gonna be a unified people, free of racism, then we need to treat everyone EQUALLY. No special legal protections, no additional welfare, no social protections. If you play up and break the law, you gotta be punished equally as to the severity of the crime, not given a free pass because of skin colour...

    The thing I find from visiting a lot of these places and I've travelled far and wide to some of Australia's most remote places and communities and I deal with not only elders, members of community and government / organisation staff is: the problem most people find with regional police forces is police in these places are inexperienced, they're sent out these spots as like a field trip at the start of their career. So a lot of them are actually inexperienced / have never actually been to remote or regional towns before they're sent there. And this creates a lot of problems with them not understanding the cultural differences between big cities and smaller towns. I personally find from my travels, there is a huge divide not only with the working class and the indigenous, there is a lot of frustration where they don't seem to understand each other and that comes down to education / learning about each others origins. And this is a huge factor with organisations who take money from the government, employ people who don't understand anything about indigenous culture and think they're making a difference by going out there but come to realise they aren't. The issue just from explaining this, personal politics and mindsight play a huge factor, people on the left and right are constantly thinking they all know better but at the end of the day, the community can only change and grow if they're willing and able to, and I know for sure with a lot of the setbacks in place it's hard for people on either side of the fence to even know what's right, so it's tough for all involved. I don't know if heavy policing or relaxation is the answer myself, but I definitely do know 1 thing - while they left keep bringing up the division between black and white, there will be no peace. It starts with everyone not pushing agenda's and just respecting everyone's journey and their backgrounds. The word racism is being over used as a tool to make everyone feel like they're too different to be united, but we know as as a nation coming from all sorts of different backrgounds who can thrive with the right amount of respect and love, it's all possible.

    • @OldAussieAds
      @OldAussieAds Рік тому +1

      I agree with you. But just to give you another point of view, the police definitely do profile groups of people. And it's all fine until they're profiling you. As an example, when I was a teenager, I grew up in an area of Sydney that was pretty safe (It could be a bit rough, but nothing I couldn't handle). I had no negative experience with the police (or any experience really). One day I visited a friend in an area of Sydney that was a whole different ball game - streets and streets of public housing and generational poverty (You could probably guess where I'm talking about). As there was a pretty good shopping centre there, I took the opportunity to buy a school bag that I hadn't seen for sale in my own area. Then we walked to my friend's house about a kilometre away. En route, a police car stopped us and wanted to see the receipt for the bag. I was flustered and couldn't find it. They were pushing us around and swearing. I never knew police to be so mean spirited.
      Now this wasn't race related as I have an anglo background. It was just that the police saw a couple of teens, walking around the streets of this public housing suburb with a brand new Billabong backpack and applied their profiling pattern on us. And because many teens in that area were likely hard to deal with, they asserted a great deal of their power onto me. If I lived there and that became a common occurrence, I'd have probably ended up resenting them. Perhaps police profile kids in a town like Alice with a similar attitude? You're correct - We've witnessed many Aboriginal kids running amok, causing damage to property and making people feel unsafe. But could it be possible that a group of Aboriginal children who are just living their life be painted with the same brush? That's not a rhetorical question - I don't live in Alice and I don't have the answers. But perhaps it's plausible given my experience as a kid.

    On my travels around Oz, I witnessed racism at first hand when I stopped at a "dry zone" motel and rest for the night. When I went to the restaurant to eat, requested a beer, I was told it was a "dry zone" politely then told, "see what I can do" with a smile. Not long after I ate and went back to my room someone knocked on my door holding a six pack of beer telling me that they will just added on my bill. I had never heard of the dry zone before but was explained to me very briefly by staff earlier when booking in as I asked where can I get a cold beer. The offer by the motel actually made me frustrated and angry, and I refused firmly, reminding them that it would be hypocritical of me to accept. This was only one example of many I witnessed in NT,WA, QLD throughout my travels.

      @@DM-ur8vc They breached a regulation imposed on the area which applies to all. So if outlets use their discretion and served under age minors alchahol, thats ok with you? I suggest you take tour of Australia yourself and then talk, because what ever I say will not change your judgement imo.

      @@DM-ur8vc When comparing laws of Islam of the middle east to a democratic Australia, is no comparison at all. Instead of regulating areas to ban alcohol with legislation,providing appropriate service to our first nation people would be a great start after what they have been put through since the first fleet is the subject here that has caused this issue due to neglect of their culture, tradition and way of life and tortured to assimilate to our ways is my point.

      @@DM-ur8vc Dry zone means no body can consume alcohol in the designated area and no alcohol to be passing in to it making it a contra band.
      Ys it is a draconian method in taking away the choices from others, I agree with you there, and im saying instead of declaring areas as dry zones, they must research why alcohol has become the problem and provide services any level necessary to solve issues would be a better solution imo. It may not make a change overnight, but certainly would in the long run for all of us to benefit from is what im trying to project.

      @@DM-ur8vc I understand what you are saying, the publican has the discretion to serve or refuse alcohol for "our safety" or liability concerned on their behalf, and that is all about litigation.
      When alcohol is deemed illegal in an area, the motel keeper MUST adhere by those rules as well, Im not saying that is very democratic to totally ban it, because it takes away the rights of others to responsibly consume alcohol.
      Offering contra ban to a white person from Asgard is an offence they are partaking awarely is double standards.
      You must be from the legal fraternity only looking at it from the legal aspect where a very sensitive and an exceptional situation has developed that includes cultural,traditional and way of life changes were imposed upon our indigenous population for over 200 in torturous ways to assimilate that has come to this point that needs immediate addressing, why they are abusing alcohol rather than declaring dry zones in a very undemocratic way and poring all necessary services to find a solution is what you are refusing to see or accept.
