I wish more people would realize how short life is and that in the end all that matters is the adventures and memories you made along the way. I am happy for you guys, way to go!!!!
@Makai Threads I think that's one way to look at it but I think realizing that life is finite is what can actually push you to take necessary risks that you would otherwise procrastinate on if life was infinite, I mean can you imagine if life was infinite, what would stop you from procrastinating all the time, we all know what happens to most people when they are not given a deadline, they procrastinate day and night. Knowing that there is a deadline on life pushes you to experience as much of it as you possibly can while you still can.

Hi Sophie 🌸 Congratulations to you both on this exciting new adventure that awaits in Portugal 🎊🎉 In the meantime enjoy your time in San Francisco and other places you visit. Well Done to you both 📣👏🏾 And never apologise, you are practicing what you preach in that you are living life and being present, it is always a privilege to listen/watch the story and journey, even if you are sharing it weeks or months later. I just found your you tube channel. Maui has been my home since 1976. I just came back from a 3 week vacation in Portugal so I was pleasantly surprised to hear that this is where you will be moving to. I totally understand as I felt exactly the same way...I love it there for all the reasons you mentioned and more! I will be curious to see how you manage to do this as u.s. citizens. I didn't think it was an easy thing to do.🤔 If I were 30 years younger I would be doing the same thing! I love Maui but it feels so dull after experiencing the vibrant life in Portugal...the dining al fresco, the fascinating culture, architecture and people so full of life! Wishing you the best with your move. Aloha!🌈
It’s so cool to realize that Portugal is so appreciated, even by those already living in paradise. I’m very happy for you and hope you enjoy Portugal even more. The best way to practice your Portuguese is of course by talking to locals. But you’ll soon realise that everyone will want to speak English with you to make you feel more welcome 😅. Have a safe journey! Hugs from Portugal

Congratulations to your new chapter and on your journey, I look forwards to seeing how Portugal influences your growth 💚💚💚
Congratulations, and I think this is great! As a wise person once told me, "Life is happens for you, not to you," so pursuing this new opportunity will undoubtedly be a great experience. I have a selfish reason, also, for being excited for you, as I am considering retiring in Portugal, so I look forward to your experience in the country. I don't have a lot of money and have been researching countries that have a good quality of life where I can live on the amount of money I will have, and Portugal always comes on the top 10 lists of places to retire. So, good luck, enjoy each moment and I have no doubt that you and your husband will be glad that you made this choice!

Hi Sophie! I'm just a new fan of your minimalist lifestyle and Maui's beauty. Well, it makes a little shock to me. But it's okay. I hope you both get healthy, fortunate, and joyful in your new home
I have always longed to move far, far away from where I live. Portugal is the country my mom is from, so this really resonated with me. I wish you all the best with getting your visas approved. I can’t wait to hear where this all goes from here for you both.🌟
Oh wooow Sophie!! What an amazing news! You moving here to Europe from Maui....gosh that´s surely a huge change for you both, but I totally can relate with this new project of yours. I moved from Italy to the Netherlands more than 20 years ago (for love ;-)) and although it might not seen such a huge step, it kinda was at that time in my life. I have always liked travelling and discovering new cultures, since I can remember really....and after one year spent at an international college in LA, I got the chance to move again to another country. Anyway, I am sooo happy for you!!! Such a total change, but well I have been to Portugal a couple of times already and I love the country very much too. We´ll be travelling around Europe during our sabbatical year (starting from August) and we might end up again in sunny Portugal again. Is there a region/place of choice already? Allright, I wish you all the luck for this new adventure in our old continent. Greetings from NL xxx
You are so right about living light, gives you more room to add more important things and concentrate on them, less distracted. Materialism breaks down, rusts, unravels, wears. I like your idea of renting things, I do that with Good will, I buy things at cheep rate and give it back when Im done. :)
I am portuguese!! I have been your follower for a long time now and I am so happy that you have chosen our country to live in. It is really a beautiful country!! I am sure you will feel at home and that you will trully love it. 🤍
I lived on Maui for 23 yrs. it’s a beautiful place! That being said there are so many exciting places to see! I’ve been to Alaska and now Argentina. Enjoy your journey called life! Good luck 🍀
I left everything behind and I came to Portugal! It is the best country in the world! I am really happy for you and everything will work out and you will love living in PT 💚 Boa sorte 🍀
So happy to know that you are moving to Portugal!! I'm Portuguese, I live in Lisbon, and knowing that a person that I admire so much chose the same country as mine to live in and that feels like home to you, is something that makes me really happy! I hope that all goes well, and that you, your husband, and your cute dogs are very happy here! 🤗🥰
Felt a little emotional watching this because we're also moving away from our home. Thanks for sharing this. Though our reasons and plans are distinct from yours, your channel has been an inspiration for me to decide to finally move and live simpler. It's been a rollercoaster of emotions while i was deciding but when i finally did, i felt freed. Thanks again.
WOW!!! What a surprise! I'm ready for your new adventure 😁 that's so great that you have your husband whose also down to move. Pls don't stop posting on either channels. You're one of my favs 🌸💕
You are always an inspiration. I’ve always wanted to live abroad. For now my home is Oahu. May your adventure bring so many memories of love and laughter.
I was in Portugal for one month last year. I fell in love with the beautiful country and friendliness of the people. I would love to be able to live there one day.
I thought at first that the video is going to be sad, but it's the opposite actually. I love traveling with my hubby and we've lived in a couple of different countries. So I know this feeling, it's an exciting journey!
Honestly i wasn't expecting to see my country in here and i was =O I'm portuguese born and raise and it's so beautifull the way you talk about our country, how you descrube us and the way you want to learn more about it! I hope you get your visa and enjoy Portugal!
I wish you the best on your move to Portugal ! I look forward to more Vlogs from you and your experiences there. Thank you for posting this week. Take care.
I already missed you . Nice to hear about your new adventure . Yes Portugal is a nice country . You did the only right thing to go where you want to go . We all should do so ! Including myself .
Feeling very excited with your new moving , same time missing beautiful calm island life videos. Wish you and your hubby all the very best and much love to your lovly doggy friends ❤️
So exciting, what a great adventure! All the best to you guys in your move. Portugal is a great place to live, so beautiful and diverse! I’ve been living in Lisbon for almost 2 years now and it’s just amazing. I hope you don’t mind me giving some (unsolicited) advice that I wish I had known before moving. Before you pick an apartment to live, please be aware of the moist issues in most Portuguese houses. Homes were built without insulation (thermal & acoustic) and central heating, so most bathrooms tend to get moldy, it gets pretty cold in winter, and if you have neighbors living above you, you can hear them walking (stomping, lol) and sometimes even talking. I’d recommend to get a broker on your side to help you find a suitable place, because the broker for the seller or landlord side won’t tell you the real ins & outs that you really want to know :)
I was really wondering and very worried since it's been almost 3 weeks ever since you uploaded your last video and checked your IG but no update of yours. Yet, when I saw this video, I was so happy and didn't expect you leaving Maui. Truly inspired by you to take risks and live the life that you truly wanted. 🙏❤️
How exciting, congrats! We spent 20 years as a military family…my husband almost died a few times while at war and I almost died from a pulmonary embolism….life is short and we would love to do the same…travel, meet new people, have amazing experiences. We’ve been working on it and are close. I’m thinking of offering being house/pet sitters around the world while people go on vacation.
That's an amazing idea! We are always looking for good reliable pet sitter as we travel and I'm sure there are many others who would appreciate it too. Wish you the best
OMG! So so happy for you , happy because you are following what makes you happy! You are going to live close where I am from, Galicia, when you will be there you need to visit Spain and of course visit Galicia you are going to love it , the Atlantic Ocean is waiting for you guys! You will enjoy this weather and people , bem-vindos! Wishing you all the best in your new chapter. Hugs and love
Wow!!! I’m shocked and was wondering what you were up to when your channel went quiet! So exciting! Thank you for continuing to share your inspirational videos with us on this journey! I look forward to your videos every week!
Hi Malama! I was born a raised in the Azores, Portugal! I'm so happy that you love my country. It is definitely a beautiful place to live. There are many Portuguese in Hawaii. The Ukulele is actually a Portuguese instrument. Best of luck on your new journey! 🌺
Actually, more people leaving then moving. Life there ain't what it seems to be. New Jersey is to New York, what Portugal is to Italy. Second rate in every way - architecture, food, quality of life, efficiency, language - Visit yes, live? No way. It is backward, primitive and one of the worst countries in the world for animal abuse. I hope Sophie visits the Azores, and Madeira. The only really beautiful places there.
@@jasminealixandranorth well the great thing about Europe is you can be an hour on a plane or a couple hours on a train and be in a completely different country/ language/ culture/ cuisine. It’s easy to travel and dip in and out. Portugal is cheap compared to most of other Western Europe so I guess that’s the trade-off! (I’ve been living in Amsterdam for 12 years now and loving the EU experience).
@@jaimetan - I live in the Swiss Alps outside of Gstaad. Its the most beautiful place in the world imho.But. I agree with what you say regarding being close to so many countries and cultures - which is why I moved to Switzerland (born in California) but travelled all over in my 20s, 30s, 40s. Unfortunately, PORTUGAL (like most of europe) is in a downward spiral. And its only going to get worse. The war is only a tiny fraction of the problem. Yes, Portugal is cheap and there are pretty parts - but its really so incredibly backward and primitive compared to the rest of europe, including parts of Eastern Europe. One of the worst global records on Animal Abuse. Good luck trying to find a health food store or organic food. Virtually impossible. There are more Portuguese in Switzerland than Swiss it seems. They all come here to do the jobs the Swiss refuse to do - work in restaurants, cleaners in hotels etc. They cannot make a living in Portugal. It is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Sophie is still young, and I think its great that she has put her foot somewhere else for awhile - and hopefully can experience other more interesting, and more beautiful places - like Italy, France, Greece, Scandinavia. I'm a member of 'Medium' and all I read about is people's horror experiences in Portugal and why they are leaving or left. I truly hope Sophie is happy there but man oh man - moving from Maui to Portugal? I can't think of anything worse.🥲 She was living in paradise, in an idyllic home at peace with her dogs. Move to Portugal? Travel there yes, travel the world of course, but stay somewhere peaceful and safe. No one leaves an island!! Actually, with Europe going to pot, and almost 30 years here, I'm considering a move to Kauai - far far away from the global psychoses gripping the world. Take a look at a map of where Portugal will be in the next 5-10 years as far as 'global warming' goes. Good luck getting drinking water! Final thought a positive one - I wish Sophie and her family the best! Looking forward to see where she goes from here - and especially feel so much love for her dogs.I hope she can find decent Veterinarian care for them. I hear it's difficult.
Good luck on your journey! I loved Portugal, specifically Lisbon! My husband and I moved from California to Munich during the pandemic and it’s been a tough transition with language, integrating, homesickness and not having much diversity. (wish Portugal was the first place we thought of because they had similar California/Hawaii vibes haha) But we have been enjoying how central our location is and traveling through the schengen area! Can’t wait to see more vids about the journey!
So happy for you and your husband! I appreciate you and your videos. They are meaningful and I use them to contemplate my own life and how I live it. Thank you Sophie. With deep gratitude ❤️
I totally get what you mean! We packed up our entire life in Singapore and moved to Tasmania. Our family and friends thought we were very brave, or some thought that we were mad, to leave our comfortable and familiar life to a foreign place with no one we knew. Well, looking bad, I cannot say if we are having a better life or not (for everyone has their own definition of “better”), but it is definitely a decision we did not regret. LIFE is too short to be wasted on thinking about “what ifs”.
What an exciting time for you guys! So many new experiences are in your future! Portugal is an incredible country that we hope to live in one day. My wife and I followed a similar path to yours….sold everything, traveled the world, and found a new home in countryside Japan. We’ve been here 13 years and have been living a wonderfully relaxing and rewarding life. I just recently subscribed and love your ideas and approach. I’m looking forward to following your new beginning and thank you so much for sharing your life’s journey!🙏❤️
I've followed you for almost a year. Haven't been up to date in the recent months, though. My jaw dropped when you said: Portugal. "Wow!" I couldn't help but ponder what this could mean in the grand scheme of things when people find themselves in a similar situation. It's beautiful, inspiring, and amazing. All at once. Keep up the good life! The Malama life!
I'm so happy for you, Sophie! But, kinda sad for me. My husband and I (along with our baby) were planning a trip to the Hawaiian islands soon and I was going to try to meet you for an autograph. Maybe, that will happen if someday you move back to Maui. Safe and fun travels!
Thank^s for giving news. I'm very glad Portugal is a beautiful place , very hot but you know what it is and not problem for both of you , I wish you all the best in your new life
Congratulations Sophie. Wish you all the best. My wife and I are doing the exact thing. We are headed to Madeira to start our new chapter. We also fell in love with Portugal on our first trip. So excited for you both. God bless

Thank you Linda ❤️
Oh wow! I really hope you can come to Portugal, you will love it here ☺️💕
I came across this page by looking up self love videos on UA-cam and I found this page.. I am a new subscriber and I so far I have been loving the content!! It has inspired me to live more intentionally ❤️
I'm from Portugal and I follow your channel for quite a while and was fairly surprised when you said you were coming here! Great choice - 35oC degrees and sunny here today!
Welcome to my beautiful and cozy Portugal! Hope you will love it as much as we do. I’ll keep following your journey here.
How exciting! And very inspiring! There are so many things I want to do in life and I fear that I’m starting to tie myself down. But if you can do it, so can I! Thank you, Sophie! I’m excited to see where our adventures take us!
Much love! 🙏🏼💕
Yes! I hope that in some small way, this will encourage you to go after what you want as well :)
Hi Sophie! I'm just a new fan of your minimalist lifestyle and Maui's beauty.
Well, it makes a little shock to me. But it's okay.
I hope you both get healthy, fortunate, and joyful in your new home
In the book of life, we all must be willing to turn the pages of time and experiences and step into the next chapter. Godspeed!
❤️ love this
I have always longed to move far, far away from where I live.
Happy new Chapter 🥰
Wish you all the best 💞
❤️ thank you so much! so sweet
This is so exciting!! I just came back from a trip to Portugal. Can't wait to see your new video content
I love Portugal so much ❤️ thank you so much. Can't wait to share
❤️ thank you!
Honestly i wasn't expecting to see my country in here and i was =O
I'm portuguese born and raise and it's so beautifull the way you talk about our country, how you descrube us and the way you want to learn more about it!
I hope you get your visa and enjoy Portugal!
Looking forward to showing us your journey in Portugal!

Dear Malama!I’ m from Portugal ,I live in Coimbra!I hope you came soon! You are going to love Portugal!
it's really touching as a Portuguese to hear this 😀hope you love your new life here
So exciting, what a great adventure!
Always listen to your heart.
Thank you soo much :) I'll be posting regularly now. Thanks for waiting
OMG!!! Sophie!!! What an exciting news and new chapter!!! I’m so happy for you guys!!!
Hi Sophie!! thank you so much :) we are so excited for the journey ahead. I hope you're doing well
Hi Malama! I was born a raised in the Azores, Portugal! I'm so happy that you love my country. It is definitely a beautiful place to live. There are many Portuguese in Hawaii. The Ukulele is actually a Portuguese instrument.
Best of luck on your new journey! 🌺
I'm so excited to explore Portugal :) truly a beautiful culture and country. Thanks for the sweet message
How EXCITING!!! Everyone is moving to Portugal, it seems. Can’t wait to see more videos from you and all the best with the move! ❤️🙌❤️
Congratulations 🎉 I’m actually flying to Portugal tomorrow! Wishing you all the best in this new adventure, safe travels!
How exciting!! Have the best time
Good luck on your journey!
It's a very good decision...Sophie...all the very very best for ur new journey ...lots of love to u....take care ...❤️❣️😘😘
I honestly have been waiting for you to post a new video... missed you so much Sophie and I wish you the very best in this new phase!
You're so sweet! Thank you for waiting. I'll be posting regularly now :)
P.S: I think I will miss the Hawaiian bird singing. Please consider it in your editing. ;)
I'm very glad Portugal is a beautiful place , very hot but you know what it is and not problem for both of you , I wish you all the best in your new life
Thank you! Yes we love the hot weather :)
I will surely miss Maui--the beautiful view huhu but wish you all the best for your new journey!🥺🤍✨

0:12 turtles!!! 🐢 🐢🐢 congratulations on your new adventure in Portugal Sophie! 😊
Thanks for uploading this.. I am in the midst of a stressful situation wherein I have to decide on giving up something, to give way to a something.. This video of yours is so timely..
Go girl...lots of wisdom and self actualisation...
Congratulations on an exciting adventure. I went to Portugal for two weeks and loved it very much.
Wow, great move to Portugal and enjoy and love your “new life” .
Paused to acknowledge how much Maui will miss you and how much we will miss sharing your life there. But! The story and the lessons continues and I can't wait to see what happens next! Happy for you both. Xx
