Most SG demos I've seen are overly-distorted, AC/DC cover, Black Sabbath, blah blah..which is where I thought this guy was going at first. Sure it's known as a rock guitar, but I think that unique sound of a clean SG through a tube amp is underrated--tons of midrange punch and this guy displayed it with some SOUL and great feel! Kudos
My SG does great jazz and fusion. Of course, it's a fantastic rock and metal guitar. This and the Les Paul is one of the most versatile guitars on the planet.
+Ben Randolph I'm a big Gibson fan and own 3 SG's and had a Les Paul for a short time. Great instruments. But I have to say, in my opinion, that the Telecaster is a much more versatile guitar. I have 2, and put an out of phase switch on one of them. A Tele can approach Gibson warmth, but I've never played a Gibson that can get as bright, clear and sparkly as a Tele. So clear, a lot of bite and spank, and built like a tank.
never found myself ever really revisiting guitar demos but this one makes me come back every other week just for that incredible tone, house of cards and for clair de lune
Every couple years I come back back to this video. First time I saw it I was a teen.. Something so inspiring about it. Idk what Joel is up to these days but I hope he’s well! Best sounding SG I’ve heard. They way it pairs with that tone king! Been chasing that clean Gibson sound since.
Thanks for the nice demo of rock to mellow. This really Shows everyone what the SG sounds like without distortion. Thanks for NOT turning up the volume to 10 and shredding out scales.
Back in the day, I bought a new 1969, that looked exactly like this one. They pretty much all had this look from 1964-69 as I recall, when using the Lyre cover plate whammy/vibrola. I think these were simply the best looking and most elegant looking SG Standards ever made. The chrome Lyre plate, the metal pup covers, the pearl handle whammy bar, and the pearl trapezoidal inlays on the beautiful dark cherry are just a beauty to the eyes, as you can see in this video. And they had a very sweet tone, but could rock out also on a good tube amp. Sold mine in 1972 to a HS classmate after playing about 90 or so paid gigs with it. He recently brought it to a class reunion to show me after 46 years of not seeing it, and it was so amazing to see it, hold it and play and sing with it again for a while after so many years, like a dream come true. It had been through heck and high water and a bad break in two/good repair where the neck joined the body, was later stolen and returned, and prior to the break had endured a lot of spilt beer on it at parties my bud had said, etc., but it still felt so solid to hold and play, and still gave a great tonal response. These are classics. Don't hesitate to buy one if you can afford to do so, just take good care of it, ha.
Joel, I just melted with your Debussy's rendition. Congratulations for inspiring me to rethink my boundaries and to keep on exploring the endless possibilities that I can achieve on my SG (an Epiphone SG Special model - not an Gibson w/ Vibrola)
Took youtube 9 years to show me this awesome sounding SG. The clean stuff was excellent. If I didn't already own a couple SGs I'd go buy a couple more. Nice demo.
I had one of those that I bought in 1969...one of the many guitars that I regret selling...I wish I had it back again. I do have a '95 reissue of it. It does not have the vibrato lyre tail piece, but it's a great guitar. I took the ice pick in the forehead pickups out and put a set of 67 (real) pick ups in it and my GAWD it sounds good.
I'm CRYING!!! My first REAL GUITAR was a 67 SG Jr. Its Long Gone. This Guitar is KILLER ( Standard). I am partial to P90s pick-ups, but I'm so in LOVE with this Guitar. Love Joel's Playing, and putting her through her paces. Anyways Thank you so much for posting this GEM 🎸💚
Thanks man, I appreciate that someone agrees with me. Paul from Guitar World plays the exact same notes and chords that drives me away from watching the product demo.
Maximiliano Martinez Not to mention, Joel is a pretty awesome dude. I've met/worked with him a couple times. He was my go to dude when I had CME order me a custom amp from PRS. Either way, any of the guys at CME are really nice guys if you ever get the chance to meet them, and chat with them about gear they offer very wise advice.
The Les Paul has a mahogany body with an arched maple slab on top. I believe that some models may share the same pickups and electronics - not entirely certain. The SG, on the other hand, has a mahogany body without the maple cap. Usually. In recent years the Gibson Custom Shop has offered SGs with a maple slab laminated to the mahogany body ( not arched, I believe) and even with 24 frets - as opposed to the customary 22 found on both the SG and the Les Paul.
10 years later and I still watch this several times a year. Joel has that effortless talent that we all envy. And the transition from House of Cards to Claire is just goosebumps.
3:49 finally someone figures out what an SG can do (other than hard rock). Never forget that Thom Yorke is an user of this thing playing lovely cleans with it

7 years later and still one of my fave guitar shop demos of all time.

Don't diss sabbath man
+Tyler Bone Do you know how to read?
+Zachary Kelley they do sound amazing clean through a good tube amp. if i can figure out how to properly record, ill put a video up of mine

I owned that guitar in Savannah GA in 1971, and I loved it. I always wondered what happened to it.
never found myself ever really revisiting guitar demos but this one makes me come back every other week just for that incredible tone, house of cards and for clair de lune
I have noticed that every vintage guitar they demo is the best one they have ever seen.
I love the fact that you played more than rock tunes. You showed exactly how beautiful the instrument can sound, lovely piece at the end.
That House of Cards tone is EXCELLENT!
Well, it's been years but I still have to hear this every once in a while. It's like a tonal landmark for me. Love it!
Your version of Clair De Lune makes my heart ache. So damn beautiful. Thank you.
This is probably the best sounding demo I've ever heard on UA-cam. Wow.
I had no idea that SGs could sound so beautiful clean.
around 2 grand for that amp lol
actually $3000
1954telecaster Yeah I could never hope to afford a tone king amp.
At least 50% of the tone is coming from that amp...unfortunately they're out of my price range too
I always play my SG clean actually
sg = so gorgeous.
That's the best sounding Gibson I've ever heard. This guy is pretty dang good too. How could 12 people dislike this?
5:12 Claude Debussy's Clair de Lune. Amazing!
It's cool he plays that because my name is Claire!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍
@@officialclairegmusician Lovely name.
@@pedropontes4762 Thanks a lot!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍
Holy mother of tone
Clair De Lune on this guitar just made me cry, awesome stuff, congratulations
Damn this guy can play.
Might be the sweetest sound my ears have ever had the pleasure of discerning.

Awesome demo and video. It's great to see a guy who's genuinely passionate about the gear he's playing and not just trying to sell stuff ;-)
The best guitar demo of all time right here. Makes me a proud SG owner!
That clean sound when you played House Of Cards is just too sweet. Love it!
the clean sound at the end was very good, so relaxing. that tone...
Claire De Lune tone was absolutely luscious. And I'm an overdrive guy.
Thanks for the nice demo of rock to mellow. This really
Shows everyone what the SG sounds like without distortion. Thanks for NOT turning up the volume to 10

Wow, best player, from an actual shop, I have seen in a long time. Bravo!
Thank you, sir.
this guy is everything i want to be in a guitar player. he is amazing. so much control and power, yet so calm. every note is nice and so many styles.
I've never heard an SG like this before. Thank you

Lol, I just watched it again. This is one of my favorite videos on UA-cam of all time. Thank you to all who were involved in making it happen.
Our pleasure!!
wow...that was the most solid demo i've ever heard. that guitar sounds amazing.
Realizing that you were playing one of my favorite compositions by Claude Debussy on the electric guitar made my classical heart soar
Watching this video cost me $1700.
+Joel Tunnah The amp or a gibson sg?
+Voxboy876 '61 "Tribute" reissue.
Sweet my brother....very sweet.
worth it? or better to buy a sg standard? you can grab a standard for about 900 bucks used..
buy a standard. I just bought a b-stcoked 2015 standard with fireburst finish. One of the best guitars ever, Costed 1000bucks.
Best SG standard i´ve ever heard. Amazing sound and clarity.
I think I've only watched this about two dozen times. Next SG I get will have a Maestro tremolo with a Lyre tailpiece.
One of my favorite classical pieces! Beautifully played ~
I would also like to add that you guys have the BEST demos/videos on the net. Period. Not up for debate.
Took youtube 9 years to show me this awesome sounding SG. The clean stuff was excellent. If I didn't already own a couple SGs I'd go buy a couple more. Nice demo.
Right on, thanks for watching! Subscribe for more!!
This has to be the prettiest SG I have ever seen, just how the cherry finish has aged. Just amazing. Not to mention the clean tones on this guitar.
Best guitar review I've ever seen before, fantastic microphones positioning, playing and instruments.
Clair de lune on an SG NAILED IT!
Even though basically every other comment mentions your playing... Great feel and tone man, really great and the guitar of course is a stunner.
Beautiful playing and what an amazing sound! Clair De Lune gorgeous! thanks for posting
I bought a 68' SG Standard after watching this video...I am still watching the video because Joel's playing is just so damn good.
Sublime clean tones... woody, vocal, just sweet as can be! Amazing playing too!
Last bit was super cool. Master lesson in how a vibrola should be used. Loved it.
this tone is pure bliss
Amazing demo. I loved the fact you didn't even touch the vibrola on a Vibrola SG!
Andy what
Sparkly, Chimey, Vibrola goodness. I love that amp with that guitar.

love this guitar 2 times and more
Joel you're a great and inspirational player! Thx
love to hear you play joel. im 65 remind me of my playing. back in the day. had 66 fender mustang then 70 black beauty les paul. thnks joel
Your'e quite welcome! Glad you enjoy it. Check out my band (thebandroyale.com) if you want to hear what I actually do.
Glad you showed up on here...That take on Clair de Lune was stunning...I hope you record that somewhere.
Superb sound and playing
Joel Playing Clair De Lune at 5:10 just made my night haha. One of my favorite songs of all time.
Nailed Clair De Lune!!!!!, great rendition buddy.
Men....nice chords¡¡ high quality video, nice drive and clean tone
now this is a true musical demo.
Must be one of the best sounding guitars I've ever heard
My God, that guitar is out of this world! It sounds like the actual Back in black recording! Awesome!!!
Hey Joel, loving your clean sound and style. Keep going and us posted. thanks!
why I love sg's so much they are so versitable in everyway as far as a quality guitar.
Beautiful, beautiful Clair de Lune on guitar!
Clare De Lune. I love that piece. It's my favorite.
Any chance you have a reliable tab for that Claire de lune ending? That was really fantastic bud
that was truly beautiful. gorgeous playing.
I may sound like a dick, but, this guy should replace the guy in Guitar World. This guy puts a soul in guitars!
like a dick? more like a wiseman. the guy from GW is annoying and doesn't do proper demos. This guy, above, knows how to do a great demo
Thanks man, I appreciate that someone agrees with me. Paul from Guitar World plays the exact same notes and chords that drives me away from watching the product demo.
Maximiliano Martinez Not to mention, Joel is a pretty awesome dude. I've met/worked with him a couple times. He was my go to dude when I had CME order me a custom amp from PRS. my dream guitar :( full pickguard and tremolo
House of cards....perfect... Amazing guitar.
I love the clean tone on these sg guitars they where made to play on crunch but , the clean is so awesome.
FANTASTIC SOUND & TONE. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nice playing man, best demo of any guitar i've ever seen
Never knew how versatile an SG was until I watched this Video - Thanks Joel!
awesome video, one of the best i have seen to show the powerful capacity of a guitar
I'm one of those weirdos who prefer the sound of an SG over a LP any day.
I thought the SG and LP were basically the same just different bodies.
therefore different tone
The Les Paul has a mahogany body with an arched maple slab on top. I believe that some models may share the same pickups and electronics - not entirely certain.
The SG, on the other hand, has a mahogany body without the maple cap. Usually. In recent years the Gibson Custom Shop has offered SGs with a maple slab laminated to the mahogany body ( not arched, I believe) and even with 24 frets - as opposed to the customary 22 found on both the SG and the Les Paul.
And the pickups are moved towards the bridge on an SG, which makes it more ,,clearer" sounding
+A Keeper Of Odd Knowledge As do I. It has that crunch that the Les Paul lacks.
Nice demo - thanks for not just blaring out distorted leads, you truly showed the beauty of tone here! Thanks Joel
Glad you liked it!
Excellent demo. You were able to capture not only that perfect tone, but the playability and vibe as well. Great fucking job!!!
Joel is just plainly an awesome guitarist, period.
what a tasty demo! really showing that this guit is more than just what we usually link it to! lovely sounds!
10 years later and I still watch this several times a year. Joel has that effortless talent that we all envy. And the transition from House of Cards to Claire is just goosebumps.
A beautiful demonstration of both the guitar and amp sir! Fantastic playing, great tone, I had to watch several times I enjoyed it so much haha!
The greatest of all times combination: This SG! + Joe! + ToneKing Metro!!! Absolute Delight.
Man! that's a beautiful sounding guitar! never heard an SG so clean beofre!
just WOW - great guitar / amp / and the guitarist - good work
enjoying Van Persie play with his SG
LOL
The notes at 6:10....heaven. Well done sir.
Please please show us a full version of Clair de lune.
Best SG demo I've ever seen. Thanks
3:49 finally someone figures out what an SG can do (other than hard rock). Never forget that Thom Yorke is an user of this thing playing lovely cleans with it
The Doors, Radiohead, Debussy, AC/DC... My favorite bands. Thank you.
That thing is amazing the clean and the dirty sound. I am sold on that sound. And your playing is nice also.
Fabulous guitar. Thanks!
Such a lovely video and excellent demo of the how an SG can do it all.
Best CME demo so far, very nice.
Beautiful and clear sound. what a masterpiece!
This Guy plays incredibly well and the SG sounds really awesome.
Nicely done!
Best Sg demo ive seen so far
I enjoyed all of this video, but from 5:12 is some of the most beautiful sounding guitar playing I've ever heard.
