I had never seen a fence stretcher until I started fencing with a master Amish fence builder. So after a couple of summers working with him I am building my own fence stretcher modeled after his.
In this video I basically walk you through the steps so you can make your own fence stretcher for your homestead. A great DIY project and a great way to add another tool to the homestead arsenal =)

quick tip: if you need to cut a threaded bolt, install a nut first. that way, if the saw messes up the threads, removing the the nut will fix it.
Those are the handiest tools on a working farm! If you gotta do fencing....that is what ya need! An old boyfriend..... :) from the 70's made one of those and I thought he was soooo smart! Turns out he really was! Thanks for sharing this! It will help so many people make fencing a lot easier!
Hey Douggie Fresh! Quick tip for you buddy... After you make your mark and draw your line with the speed square, slide the speed square down the board just a bit to line up your saw blade to where you want to make your cut then slide the speed square back up against the side of your saw so you have a nice straight edge to run the saw down. I know it's not super important to have a perfectly straight cut in this instance but it's a nice little trick to know. Thanks for the vid's man!
Hi Doug. Whenever you get in a situation where you have to cut a bolt, if you put the nut on first, cut the bolt and then remove the nut it helps to repair any damage done to the threads. Sometimes it is hard to start a nut on bolts that are cut. I have found that this helps. Great video! I love your channel.
have been a follower since 2019, today (4/29/23) find myself designing a fence to keep people out. These are crazy times. Sooo, here I am seeking among your videos how to stretch a wire fence alone, AND, then you even show this video on How to Build the Fence Stretcher. Amazing. I've seen my dad use one of those for many years, and I've made a couple over the years and use them myself. Had no idea we were using an Amish tool. Looking forward to the sequel.
Great video Doug. I have nothing but the greatest respect for the Amish people. If everyone would adopt their hard work ethic things wouldn't be as bad as they are in my honest opinion.

I've made these type of fence stretchers for years. I made mine using oak lumber, works great.

I have been using one of those for the whole 22 years I've started living on my homestead. I never knew they were called Amish fence stretchers though.There was lots of real 2X4's here from way back when they really were hard wood real 2x4's
I made mine with those.
They aren't a "stretcher", more of a spreader bar to distribute the load across the entire height of the wire. A "stretcher" would be something that pulls this and thus the rest of the fence. We would use a come-along that was hooked to the tow bar on a tractor since the wire would break before the tractor was pulled backwards. Then staple the wire to the fence posts, wrapping the wire around the end post as you stapled it. I clicked on this actually thinking he was showing how to build an actual stretcher out of wood.
If you look at the commercial products, this is sometimes sold as a "stretcher bar" to be used in combination with another device referred to as a "stretcher", so even they differentiate between the two. The stretcher bars usually consist of a metal bar with hooks on it to catch the wire of the fence netting.

Funny, I was planning on making one of those yesterday and happened across your video. The only thing I did different was I made the holes bigger on the 2X4 that you attach the nuts to, its easier to put that board on and off. Today is fence stretching day at our place in Maine, we have about 150 feet of woven sheep and goat fence to hang on our wooden posts. I really enjoy your videos Doug, good stuff here on your channel....!!!

I had no idea these were Amish. I think you made it way fancier than needed. I made mine out of leftover pieces of 4x2. Put eyebolts on the top and bottom (with regular carriage bolts in the middle). Only about 3.5 feet for mine. I used eyebolts so that I could run chain through the top and bottom and pull with come-along. Didn't do much measuring either. Just eyeballed it. No need as long as the tension is distributed and that is more a matter of having a straight line pull than the bolts. Mine is not as finished as this one but works just as well for the one or two times a year I use it. An even better option is to use wing nuts (the plastic wings if you can find them) that make taking on off the stretcher a cinch.

asked hubby how his Dad stretched fence and they took a bar welded hooks pulled it at the end of the fence line and hooked tractor up with come along and stretched it! neat how people do things 😎😀😋
I'm excited about this. I have very saggy fences. We are in the city with a good size garden that we have to keep chickens out of.

I live near Amish. Horse and buggy. But they buy gasoline. Hmmmm. Maybe they do have some power stuff????? Someone let me know where to an energy efficient self powered circular saw. I'm off the grid....solar, propane, gas generator when I need run tools or short energy needs. uses.

OCD here but how did you decide how far apart to drill the holes for the bolts?
I had one of those factory made, I bought at a sale. But it came to where I wa either using pallets for fence or later on cattlr or hog panels, and I havnt stretched a woven wire fence since around 85
Sears and Wards both had them in there catalogs for decades

You're going to put your fence post stretcher on the verticle right on the opposite side that you're pulling.

You want to clamp the wire around 2ft from the end of the wire. That gives you something to work with after the fence has been stretched to wrap around a post or steeple it onto a post.

Those Canadian two by fours are 1/1/2 thick so that makes three inches so 4 inch lag bolts would be plenty

that will work really good if you using hog wire or chicken wire if you have a chain link fence the bolts are too short

Those are NOT "lag bolts"! Lag bolts are more like giant wood screws with a hex head, and DO NOT use nuts. What you have are "fully threaded hex bolts"... Thought you should know the difference.
