I'm actually American and the Dutch practice survived here in some communities, my father's mother's side have been doing it ever since they got here in the late 1700's

@@victorkreig6089Traditions seem funny , exciting or strange now,but If you see every historic custom in their historical context they make sense. Breaking old dishes in new year exists in other non-european cultures and this made me wonder when i saw this video.I think they wanted to have an excuse to get rid of their chipped and worn out dishes.
