Hi, I bought my first Pass colours after watching your review, and have just got 2 more tubes, making a set of fourteen. I have successfully dried these into pans, a couple did not look the way I expected, being rather thin and bubbly, but the rest are fine, so I guess I probably got the binder. I poured them in three goes as there is a fair amount of shrinkage away from the walls. Your paintings are really lovely, and gave a good idea of the versatility of the hybrid nature of these paints. I was trained decades ago in using gouache, when quite a lot of illustration was still being done by hand and digital illustration was unknown. I have a few examples from that time, they have weathered it pretty well. I used Talens gouache then and have a couple of boxes of pigment I decanted from these 35 years old tubes! All except one reconstituted well! The one that didn't grew a very hairy beard.... So Gouache can last a long time unchanged. There is a high reliance on exact colour mixes in use in order to colour match them. I was wary of using my old reconstituted ones on anything requiring a lot of time, so bought the Pass colours. The more than exceed expectations, and the better the paper the better they look. Am about to make up a second set for someone else, as they are so pigmented I may never get to completely use them, just as I never used my Talens set, which was purchased originally for doing airbrush pieces! I hope you are still enjoying yours as I think they give a very different effect to traditional watercolours while having all the advantages of being able to be used very diluted, which traditional gouache would not do if used with a standard brush, and did not tolerate layering at all.
I'm so glad to see you're enjoying your Pass paints! I have yet to play more with mine. I really want to but I'm bogged down by the fact that I don't know which palette I want to use for them. (Might've figured it out just now while typing this! Yay!) I sent the tubes from this video to Denise (In Liquid Color) so she might try them out, as I've got the set of 48 when it was on a pretty good sale some time ago. Gouache is a bit harder to find nowadays and the most available option (W&N) is not necessarily the most fun to use. I'm so excited to paint more with the Pass colors, I hope I can find the time for it soon! :)
I have shinhan watercolors and Holbein gouache and really think this is something I would love to try. Love their stuff, both companies. I like that lifting isn’t much of an issue. I really love your landscapes, so serene. :)
Thank you so much! :) I have yet to work with real gouache more. I only have an odd selection of gouache colors but painting with these hybrid paints made me curious. I hope you eventually get to try the PASS paints, they are very unique.
Thank you!! :3 I would agree, I also feel like these paints are a good match for my usual painting ways. I'm already excited to paint with them again, haha! I know there's a pile of watercolor palettes that are looking at me with big frowny eyes XD
Have not heard of these, so this was a bit of a surprise for me. As always, you bring something wholly unique to the community and for me, I've learned about so many new products and styles from you, for which I'm so grateful! Just received my DaVinci dot card palette and really enjoying it! ;) The company is fortunate to have you presenting their product, as you are so thorough in your reviews, and you produce such incredible work. Honestly, I believe you could take a bowl of mud and still produce ridiculously beautiful artwork from it. Seriously! lol! Thank you for another unique review/demo that really gets me thinking! Cheers, Eve! :)
Hi Mark! :) I'm just trying to share stuff so I can justify having so many supplies............. ahem. XD And as I keep telling Marty, mud is just raw pigment ;) Thank you so much for the kind and thoughtful words, I really appreciate it! Will you be sharing your thoughts about the DaVinci paints with us? I'm curious about them but can't easily find them here (and they are pricey in Canada, for some reason!) Have a great day! :)
I view coffee as a raw pigment, too! I just never get to paint with it because I drink it so much! As for the DaVinci paints, I was going to post a video but learned that my "on" was not recording. grrrr! So, I ended up using the dot card and making a wonderful mess of it! The paints are terrific and very smooth. They don't do what M. Graham does for me, but I could see looking into these after the holidays. I've ordered another DaVinci dot card, as it was a good deal, which I may use in an upcoming giveaway. More on that later! Cheers! :)
Darn it, yet another must-have product. 😉 I already love Shinhan watercolours and now these sound amazing too. Love your paintings too, the colours are wonderfully vivid!
Thank you!! :) December is nearing; it's gonna be time to prepare another gift list! Maybe sneak in a few tubes of PASS paints..? I hope you get to try the paints, they are really fun! And yes, so vivid! :D
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault there are SO MANY wells!! I love it! And I love that it appears you used the large ones for the raw colors, and the smaller parts for mixes, which I think was genius! That's what I mean by out of control-it's so crazy that it's awesome!
Oh hey, I've heard of these! I think maybe Myriam did something with them? Not sure. But this is super cool! For a moment I was worried that you'd read into my brain again because I just got a bunch of shinhan paints for a review....but they're the watercolors so while this is different, it gives me a good idea of what to expect!
Myriam? These PASS paints are really fun and they deliver super vibrant results, I'm really happy with them. It's on my long-term plans list to try the watercolors, I'm looking forward to seeing just how they are compared to Holbein and other brands. Also looking forward to your video about them!! :D
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault I also just set up a Holbein palette today and will review them! Actually, I've got Holbein, shinhan, kuretake, koi, and mission gold....might want to do an Asian watercolor vs European watercolor showdown. I wish I remembered Miriam/myriam's name right now because I'd say more.....but I think I've also seen a video of someone making a sailor moon picture with these shinhan pass ones. We could always swap some paints! Since I've got a 33 color set in the shinhan watercolors, we could swap the same five colors and do a direct comparison between the shinhan WCs and the pass colors. I could then also give you those paints and pigments I've been threatening to send you for most of a year, now. =>.
Thank you for such a nice review!! I definitely have these on my wishlist now.😉😍 I've been eyeing them forever, but not many people had reviewed them so your video was very helpful!!! 😊👏👏💕💖
I'm not sure I'm happy about the lack of pigment information in this product. Also, if you will test them for lightfastness, I'd be most interested. Nice review! Lucille x
What do you mean, the lack of pigment information? All the paints have their pigments clearly labeled on them, and there's also in a nice chart on the brochure...?
ive seen these on jacksons before and um and ahd over them as I've never seen them used. was always worried that they'd be too good to be true. The paintings and paint look amazing.
They are pretty fun (though like I said, not the most lightfast). You can start with a tube or two to try out if you're really curious. They are also fairly interesting from a crafter's point of view, especially in how they dry :)
Thanks for this review. I did really enjoy it and love your little paintwork too! I'm looking for a first set of gouache paint at the moment. I actually already own Shinhans artist quality watercolour 24set which I do love.
Thank you! :) I wish there was a smaller set of PASS paints, but you can try a few tubes to see if you like them. Some basic colors like cyan, magenta or yellow can be good to try and not too expensive altogether :)
I love Jackson's. I've never purchased there, I live in Australia but I love their website . They are a fantastic choice for art supplies globally. I love that they have free postage for brushes over 20 pounds which is relatively easy to spend if you're buying quality or cheap but in abundance (more than like 3 brushes etc). I've been looking at purchasing their kolinsky's and proArte etc brushes. I think I did see these at their store awhile back when I was looking at Watercolours. I want so many things.. art is addictive. I think I spend more time looking at supplies than using them though... it's a good thing supplies are too expensive to just buy buy buy lol
I loved your little paintings. I can see this video was from last year, so I guess you have a good experience by now. I wonder if it was easy to go from dark to light? Thank you for sharing this great review.
thanks for the review eve... after playing with reeves for two years these will be my upgraded gouache paints and i just love the fact that i soon can play with a specialty palette, i orderd a mijello palette for myself and my cotman palette will be filled for marty to doodle with, im not sending a mijello palette to the us my postage cant handle that 😂 is my thank you for marty as he was so generous to sent me some really awesome colors to play with hehe. good to know it rewets fine.

I have a question! When using the Shinhan Pass "as watercolor", do you feel any difference between using this and just pure watercolor paints? Likewise with gouache, are there any difference you felt when using this and when using paint that's just purely for gouache? Do they act the same way? I hope the question's understandable T0T
As far as I can say, I tend to use the PASS colors more like I use gouache than watercolors. Since these are really a hybrid paint, I'm not sure yet what is the best method to use for them. Experimenting with the colors and the paints is probably the best way to figure it out (I need to do that more with these paints!)
This is definitely not a new medium but just gouache. I use gouache for my watercolour works, just like these I use more water for watercolour effect. But colours look vibrant I dont think shinhan would produce a bad quality paint. I have my markers for years they are perfect and even thought I dont use them a lot they havent dried in 6 years.
Great video Eve! 😁 I have heard of the brand, but not of this type of paint. I definitely see how these would be useful for people who do more types of illustrations. Is it the added ingredient for opacity that interferes with lightfastness? I'm just curious as to why gouache tends to have lightfastness issues. I love that forest painting!! 🤗

Hi Eve, I was under the impression that Mijello Mission White is also a gouache which, with the addition of water, becomes a watercolor. Could you have a look into that, please?
Hi Christiane! I just looked into the Mission White paints and they look very much like the Shinhan PASS paints, in concept. I haven't tried Mijello's version, so I can't really talk from experience at this point. Seems like a very similar idea, so I'd expect them to work the same. Funny that both Korean brands came up with that kind of product before anyone else... Thanks for mentioning these paints, I had never heard of them before :)
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault Thanks Eve. The Mission White paints are on my wishlist. So, I was very excited about your review. BTW, I like your painting style. 👍
These always seemed a little gimicky to me. I'm glad you enjoyed these though! I'm curious if some kids may find this a decent "step" between their silly tempera and real watercolor. (Toxicity unknown though). Hmm...
I remember seeing your bright green Shinhan PASS paint! They are really fun colors! And the holidays are coming, is the set on your gift list already? ;)
You could definitely try a few tubes of these (primaries + white, or the 6 colors I got are quite good to start) and see if you like them! They are probably your most affordable option at this point, too ;)
I am very interested in these hybrid paints. I know Mijello makes a white class which is a watercolor/gouache hybrid as well. Have you tried these as well. I’m looking for any opinions on differences or quality before I decide which ones to get. Thank you for your video, very informative, a cute little painting. Thanks.
Thank you! :) I have not yet tried the Mijello white class line, I'll see if I can get some of it to eventually compare. With the fact that I haven't tried those in mind, I can still say that the PASS paints are good and not very hard to get, as Jackson's sells them. Thank you for the feedback! I'll see what I can do! :)
am getting some acrylic gouache at the end of the month from jacksons and the work like a mat acrylic that you can add other media to, turners acrylic gouache
You used distilled water to rewet the paints, is there a particular reason for that or is tap water not so great for paint ? I'm adding this to my must try list, now I hesitate between holbein, winsor&newton and these ahhh... :)
The main reason is that it's what I have easily accessible on my desk, but there can be issues with water hardness and paints (if you're curious, check this article by Lee Angold : leeangold.com/2017/04/26/effects-of-water-hardness-on-watercolour-paints/ ). Is there one of the brands that are more affordable or easier to find for you?
Thanks for the link! Holbein is easily accessible through amazon, 30 tubes for 68 € -used to be 50 though-, Shinhan I can only get 48 tubes for 179 € -no way for now- and Winsor&Newton's kit of 10 tubes (14 mL) is 27 € but I can get it open stock easily. Which is probably what I'm going to do !
I'm pretty sure that around this time that this video was made; the mijello mission white, which is a gouache watercolour hybrid as well and they're also a Korean brand! But it isn't very well known..
@@EveBolt Wow! I'm surprised that an artist I admire responded to me! I haven't seen much of mijello mission white on youtube and they're really expensive on Amazon, at least where I live.
Too bad you can only buy them in a huge set for mucho $$$$... I found one place in Florida that sells individual tubes but most of the common colors are out of stock.
Guess I can just bite the bullet and order from Jacksons.. will take a bit to get to US but the prices aren't bad. How do these compare to W&N pro gouache? I can get a 6 intro set for $29...
These are not exactly like gouache, as they are meant to be more of a hybrid gouache/watercolor. I tend to use my gouache like watercolor as well, so I'm not sure how helpful I can be here.

Shinhan market these as a "hybrid", but yeah. Using them feels like using gouache and watercolor, depending on the color. They are indeed quite nice!
Hi Val, thank you!! :D
For these, a few of the chosen pigments are less lightfast (like the beautiful PG8 in that Sap Green), but there has to be something in the formula that affects other usually-stable pigments. Or perhaps there are some dyes added in that are not named but will indeed never be lightfast.
Regular, standard gouache paintings are hard to keep in the long-term less because of lightfastness, more because it tends to dry really dry and crack and peel off its support. Not all the time, but that can happen. Also, to get vibrant gouache colors, they often use less lightfast pigments in regular gouache too. Since gouache was often used by designers to paint illustrations for ads and the like, it only had to be pretty for the time it took to scan/photograph it. After that, it was either tossed or stored away.

Thank you! :D I'll keep an eye out for the Mission paints, see if I can find out more about them eventually!
Question, is the only set size they sell 48? I see you had six colors in the video. Did you buy them individually?
Some places sell the tubes open stock. I know Jackson's has them! (here @jackson's: bit.ly/2wHhn1Y )
@@EveBolt Thank you for your help! Great vid btw.
These always seemed a little gimicky to me. I'm glad you enjoyed these though!
I'm curious if some kids may find this a decent "step" between their silly tempera and real watercolor. (Toxicity unknown though). Hmm...
It's possible! They are bit pricey though, so I think it would a case-by-case thing XD
I have one tube of shinhan pass, I don't remember name of the color, but it is bright green xD I have been wanting the whole set for long time.
I remember seeing your bright green Shinhan PASS paint! They are really fun colors!
And the holidays are coming, is the set on your gift list already? ;)
It is actually waiting me on my Jackson's art shopping cart xD
have put a order in for a shinhan aluminium pallet
Oh, sounds neat! I hope you'll like it! :D
I loved it! I've been meaning to buy a good gouache basic set to try out. Maybe this is a good option!
You could definitely try a few tubes of these (primaries + white, or the 6 colors I got are quite good to start) and see if you like them! They are probably your most affordable option at this point, too ;)
Do you think they are more expensive by purchasing them individually than purchasing the 48-set?
Yes, I think the set is possibly a better value per tube. It would depend on the price of each and if there's any sales on at that moment :)
I am very interested in these hybrid paints. I know Mijello makes a white class which is a watercolor/gouache hybrid as well. Have you tried these as well. Yes, they are unique and interesting! There are quite a few gouache hybrid products, hehe
am getting some acrylic gouache at the end of the month from jacksons and the work like a mat acrylic that you can add other media to, turners acrylic gouache
I'm used them a bit, they are really good! :)
cool I will be giving the a good look and trying toget a watercolour fell out of the on watercolour paper
There are about 4 major painting companies making the product Acrygouache. I haven't tried them though.
Acrylic gouache is not the same as this hybrid product, though.
True! I learned of the Mijello one right after I posted this video! They are not as easy to find, tough...
@@EveBolt Wow! I'm surprised that an artist I admire responded to me! I haven't seen much of mijello mission white on youtube and they're really expensive on Amazon, at least where I live.
They are super pricey where I live too, I have to get them from sellers on Amazon or Ebay.
How's the drying shift on this paint?
Too bad you can only buy them in a huge set for mucho $$$$... I found one place in Florida that sells individual tubes but most of the common colors are out of stock.
That's a bummer! Jackson's has the sets and the individual tubes, that's where I bought my set :)
Darn.. guess I'm going to have to order the big set.. Jacksons is out of most of the standard colors until September!!
Enable away! Lol
Hahaha! Alright then! ;)
This wasnt the only product like this in the world... mission gold has hybrid paints and has they are awesome check them out
The Mission White paints, their similar hybrid product, came out after the PASS paints, and after I made this video.
