  • We're taking trips to the moon as we test different combos on a 331ci small Chevy. Starting with an excellent little combo good for 7K RPM, we step it up to show you how improved airflow on a small motor equals pure RPM. Best of all, we do it all with simple parts and a small budget.

    The first engine I built was a 331 in 1981. I used a 4 bolt 350 block with a forged 327 crank and stock rods. It saw 7,000 many times, but usually by accident. The heads were unported 1.94 valve double-hump fuelies with a comp cams 280 magnum. It seemed fast at the time but was probably not much over 300 hp. Fun for delivering pizzas though..

      I'd say it's nostalgia for the boomer generation rather than magic.
      Why build a 327 that revs to 8k when you can build a 372, 383 or 400 that does the same? So much have changed in terms of cams, lifters, heads, intakes and so on, so what is the point? Sure if revs are what you are into, why not take something that small to 9.5k?

      @@AB-80X Even with modern technology, you'll eventually struggle to feed the extra displacement with the constraints of the SBC cylinder head unless you go forced induction. When I see people building a SB 400 I always question why waste your time when a 396 will easily run circles around it? The 327 is the perfect small block. It's free revving, yet still makes decent torque and the SBC head design can feed it all of the air it needs.

      IMHO, the 283 and 327 were probably the best V8 engines GM ever built. They don't have the power of the LS engines, but can be built reliably to achieve the LS power levels. World Products makes a traditional SBC block that has the LS head bolt pattern cast on the deck surface, instead of the traditional SBC bolt pattern. IMHO, this is an awesome way to go.......

Hand ported 461X heads that had 167cc In. ports, No fancy aftermarket heads and a flat tappet cam. It made 450 Tq @4200 and 470 Hp @ 6500. That engine still holds the record for a 2 valve engine of the best spread between peak Tq and peak Hp in the history of the EMC. That same year Randy Malik entered a 331 sbc also, it made 444Tq @ 5200 and 507Hp @ 6500.

      @AB-80X 8 місяців тому +1

      You know what would be nice? If pwople would think before they post.
      Here's a question. Exactly what do you think would happen if you were driving at say 45 mph, at 2000 rpm and floor it? Will it stay at that rpm trying to lug itself up, or would it, as is always the case, kick down and flair straight up to 4500 rpm and run? Why is it so hard for people to understand that you don't run your engine at WOT @ 2000 rpm? I mean, are you going to use it to two a powerboat up through the Ike with a one speed gearbox?
      What this does at part throttle at 2000 rpm has nothing to do with what it would do at 2000 rpm on a dyno during a WOT pull.
      As for how easy it is to live with? If it's a manual with a highway gear, it will suck. If it's an automatic with a loose converter that has a lockup, then you're pretty good to go no matter the gear, unless you run some kind of 2.42 gear.
      In short, you're asking a pointless question because you will never run WOT at 2000 rpm, and because why would you build a 331 that revs to 8k if it should be easy to live with?
      Can't help but to wonder if you actually even wrench or race. Sorry, this is just so odd of a thing that most racers and wrenches would know.

    Ten years ago I bought a '69 Chevy C10 that barely ran, for about $500. When I took the valve covers off I found a broken pushrod, and RHS in big letters on the cylinder heads. I replaced the cam/lifters/pushrods with Comp pieces and I drove it until two years ago. I regularly shifted the 358ci at 6500rpm, but there were a few times I missed shifts and zinged it to 7500rpm. The person that built that smallblock knew what they were doing. Eventually the engine started burning too much oil(years of abuse and cam lobe metal from ten years before) so I pulled it and am now swapping in a 5.3 ls. The 350 is in my garage awaiting a rebuild to swap into my '82 Scottsdale shortbed 4x4

      @mikewillett5076 Рік тому +1

      Yeah that's an interesting topic. I would've liked to have seen more cam with the first combo. I think it could've made even more power without the much higher RPM. (Not more than the second combo to be clear).

    • @bradgriffith4231
      @bradgriffith4231 Рік тому +1

      Nobody runs single pattern cams anymore unless they run a Stock class & have to run a "stock" spec cam, although none are really stock spec, since "cheater" cams have quicker ramps which effectively simulates more cam with stock lift & duration.

      @@_TheBreaker_ . Nice! I'll own a big block some day. Something I've always wondered, why is it that with some cams that are really big, the exhaust duration might still be more than intake, but the exhaust lift is sometimes a little less than intake?

      These guys did a fuel test & octane made almost zero difference & the combo needed the same 29* of total timing & same jetting with 87, 93, 110, & 118 octane. The engine did make more power with E85 & wanted more timing & jetting. My 409ci SBC street motor runs the same with 87, 93 or pump gas mixed with a bit of unleaded race gas, but the race gas does smell cool! LOL

    I am a BIG fan of the Windsor. It's one of Ford's best engines, and it served the Blue Oval proudly (in the Mustang/Shelby GT350, in the Cobra, and in the Mk1 GT40). However, pound for pound, cubic inch for cubic inch, the small block Chevy is frustratingly good. It's just more powerful (per equivalent cam grinds, manifold efficiency, spark, and air/fuel volume), can turn higher RPMs more easily, and it doesn't require special reinforced gaskets for endurance racing (where a Windsor will eventually face seal failure/compression loss--just ask Ford at Le mans). I still think the Windsor SOUNDS better (especially with equal-length headers), but I am happy to acknowledge that the SBC is superior in most regards. But, the SBC forced Ford to create the Cleveland and the Modular (now Coyote/Voodoo), so I'm not too salty about it. ; ) Great episode!

    • @totensiebush
      @totensiebush Рік тому +6

      I think I'd take a nice Windsor over a pre-Coyote mod, given similar aspiration. It took them a *long* time to make any power.

      @@flyingphoenix113 I'm curious what would make more power looking at NA engines a year before the Coyote came out (2010 or so). A 427 Windsor I would expect to walk all over a 5.4 DOHC, you just didn't have the same degree of aftermarket parts. Not sure if anyone did much bore/stroke on the 5.4, google is claiming they can get to 6.2, still much smaller than a Windsor. Does anyone make heads for them?

      I've always been under the impression that a sbc will pop a head gasket before a sbf because of the hot spots in the center of the sbc heads due to the exhaust ports being right beside each other where as the sbf has equidistant exhaust ports, still like both honestly tho
