    As someone who also studied this whole post-Bretton Woods "financialisation" of capitalism, I gotta say, this topic is so f'ing important and it's amazing to hear it talked about here. Great job picking topics and asking the right questions, as always, Briahna. And, of course, great job Grace for the explanation.
    I think one of the most important points raised by Grace is the idea that this current form of capitalism is reliant on debt. It's *essential to the system* that people accumulate more and more debt (which, by itself, is f'd up). And yet we're running out of it, because people just can't stand to bear any more.

    One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with his friend. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonging to him and the other to his friend.
    When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.
    This really bothered him and he questioned his friend about it. "Burnie? Burnie, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."
    Burnie replied, "My precious, precious friend, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."
    I'm from the UK but if I was still living in NYC I would be shouting from the rooftop "VOTE BURNIE 4 2020 POTUS"👍

    "underselling competitors until they drop out" is literally the economic definition of monopolistic behaviour, supposedly to be "regulated" by anticompetition and antitrust laws. jeff bezos is basically an industrialisation era capitalist exploiting both workers and customers while avoiding taxes and socialising his costs (including the massive amount of pollution caused by his worldwide delivery infrastructure).
    our laws have failed to prevent, regulate, or prosecute these criminals who burden world economies to the tune of billions of dollars worth of unscrupulous business malpractice. these laws have remained outdated since the rise of the merchant class, who are effectively the new feudal lords but with much more far-reaching tendrils into every facet of modern society through tech and data. they've redefined "the king's heavy taxes" into "rat race consumer culture".

    • @billytheweasel
      @billytheweasel 4 роки тому +1

      There's a case to be made by the delivery trucks saving all the individual shopping trips in separate cars. All the other stuff is so true.

    • @alveolate
      @alveolate 4 роки тому +2

      @@billytheweasel it really depends... people usually don't make shopping trips to buy only 1 or 2 items. but some of the items you order on amazon are shipping in from all over the globe; often only starting the journey on order, so they're pretty much never going together in bulk. and after these items reach a nearby distribution centre, delivery guys still have to send them individually to each home... so those individual driving trips just get transferred to amazon drivers.
      the only "good" thing about amazon is convenience. but even at ridiculous discounts (which are pricing out competitors) they still cost the economy, society and most importantly, the environment quite a bit.
      now, it's not like the distribution infrastructure cannot be improved - amazon could revolutionise the corporate green movement by committing to emissions reductions and sustainable operations. but they show no sign of doing that at all... most likely because such an effort would cut into profits rather significantly. improving sustainability could simply mean increasing delivery times (so items are bulked up more per location before shipping) and innovation in logistics (such as labelling the origin of products so consumers are informed about the distance it has to travel to get to them). these are not exactly difficult optimisations, but they probably won't add to profits a single bit.

    Wealth inequality? Those people EARNED THAT MONEY! They worked more than you did. Went to school more than you did. They invented something that you didn’t. Why in the hell do you think you deserve the same income?

    • @nunyabusiness7278
      @nunyabusiness7278 4 роки тому

      We dont want everyone to have the same income as millionaires and billionaires. We just want everyone to have a living wage and the ability to live a good life. CEOs dont work 300 times harder than you, and nobody should have more than $1m a year in income, or $25m in wealth.
