You make a great point, yes if it is at all possible it is better to pre finish the boards & get at least one coat on all surfaces including end cuts if you have the patience, all the best MP
I hear you on the sprayer idea !!, the brush application really lets the stain penetrate though, spray applications tend to sit or float on the surface, plus this project is fairly small, borderline if i want to set up the sprayer for this one, hope this helps. MP
You did a great job of demonstrating your ability as a teacher and craftsman. You also have a great deal of patience as seen in your taking the pains to paint around the hardware instead of slopping paint all over it or even painting the hardware plus cleaning the paint out of the rim of the can. Painting brown with a white shirt would be disastrous for me. Would there be any advantage to painting all the boards before they were nailed on. It seems to me it would protect the overlaps.
Best info video on rough cedar staining I've found to date. Question, I'm replacing old cedar 10 inch thin to thick siding on the cottage but has many cracks showing now, What would you suggest for the brown color to cover water stain and the cracking effect? Haliburton ON. thanks.
So the stain can be used instead of say something like Thompson's Water Seal. Also could you water seal first and thin stain. Or would the water seal block the stain?
Hi, thanks for your question, the reason i like acrylics is because of their flexibility & breathability, what you have to keep in mind is the sun's effect on the earth is to draw moisture ( be it in the ground or in a substrate) up to itself, when you put a barrier between the sun & that moisture what happens ? in time something has to give, with acrylics you may find excessive fading of the pigments, but with alkyds you find a dramatic breakdown of the film ( cracking, bubbling ), regards. MP
Nice work. I have a question about acrylic vs oil - I live in the opposite climate as you guys up there North of the boarder. We migrated from Michigan, ending up in the desert of Southern Arizona. Growing up I used acrylics indoor and out, but now I'm not sure - the summer sun here is brutal and it is dry. Not sure if oil wouldn't be better but would rather work with acrylic. Any thoughts? In the cooler months we're putting up a wood shed. Thanks
Jessie Calvin....I'm not slamming any product ...but just use the exterior stain if your choice, Be it solid, transparent, or semi transparent ....water seal is basically just clear....don't mix the two
My goodness must have taken you days. Should have used an airless sprayer to get better coverage. Too many highlights left behind. A natural china bristle brush would give you better coverage too.
helpful video. I'm 47 and have painted several projects in my lifetime. Videos like this help us to think more like a pro. thanks.
Brilliant tuition on staining rough sawn timber , thank you " liked "
A lot of great information, Thank You!

Are paint shaking machines at paint stores good or not ?
Why you didn't use an electric drill paint mixing tool ?
I'm hope it helps you in your future projects.
use a 3/4" roller back brush twice as fast
good work

Thank you.
Thanks.
Thanks
My works too. Used woodprix handbooks and build it with no problems.
Sorry dude, but you're not actually "staining", you're just painting it all, by slopping it on.
