I’ve played Beacon Park many, many times and still play it now so I’ve seen the devastation unfold in real time. The bit where Liam steps over the mud with the metal fences either side is actually the fairway of the first hole! It’s a cracking course too, really tricky and strategic. My course Swinton Park, was closed in September due to some very greedy people who got control of the club, through very devious means, ran it down despite it being a viable club, only yesterday they sold all the greens equipment, if you Google Swinton Park G C, you could read about the Saga the members have gone through, who knows Liam? You could do a vlog on our course, which hasn’t yet deteriorated to this extent, we have fought off Belway homes and another housing company, our fight to get our club back goes on, come on you white men!!

      I can't see why this would be a story. Its public land, the council has an obligation to the tax payers to get the most out of this asset as possible and that is not offering a subsidised golf course for £230 membership per year. Its very sad for the members that have lost out but what about the tens of thousands of other residents in this area who have no interest in golf but are paying for subsidised golf membership not to mention the opportunity cost of such a huge piece of land.

    • @zedzeduk
      @zedzeduk 3 роки тому +1

      @@henrickemmerson4140 I understand the point. But surely in that situation just tell everyone the club is being closed, list the reasons, and move on. Dodgy as **** I'd say.

    • @henrickemmerson4140
      @henrickemmerson4140 3 роки тому

      @@zedzeduk It doesn't seem great but if the council said they were closing down the golf course then there would have been just as much uproar. Unfortunately the council took the £4m for landfill because how could they refuse it when they've got a golf course costing them money and taking up and that could be used more efficiently. Its also a Labour run council in a Labour voting area so they can pretty much do what they want without recourse. I'm not saying any of this is great but the members were getting something for nothing and are now unhappy that this has been taken away. There are separate issues at play

    • @ukgroucho
      @ukgroucho 3 роки тому +6

      @@henrickemmerson4140 A couple of points, well 3
      1) No, councils are not in place to ensure that every asset that is publicly owned delivers the best financial return. They are there to work to deliver quality services and an environment that supports a positive community. In doing that they have to balance the books - it's not a purely hard commercial driven process. Anyone that becomes a councillor with that view of 'working the assets ruthlessly' is in the wrong vocation.
      2) Where does it end in your 'commercial returns' view of the world? Every park, children's playground, school playing field could get cut in half.... converted to landfill, parking that councils love to get revenue from etc. etc. These are assets that are owned by the community and under the caretaking of the council. Greedy eyed councillors wanting to fill the council coffers so they seem to have done a good job are working to serve themselves today rather than serve the community in the long run.
      3) Did anyone ask the local residents if they wanted a landfill on their doorstep... with the associated smell, traffic etc.? I know which I'd rather have near to me.

    later the chap at the bar asked me how it was. Told him and he allowed as how it was not a great course. in the wind the ball has to land more than 10 yards before the greens just to stop on them.

    Great video Liam, highlighting corrupt and dubious practices. Our course, Cob Tree Manor in Maidstone, Kent, is facing the same situation. The Maidstone Borough Council has approved plans to dump landfill on the course, meaning the front 9 will be taken out of play for several years. The property was donated to the Council years ago and was meant to be for the benefit of all. Sadly, the Council have other ideas, likely to ruin the area. Mytime Active has the lease on the property and they have a track record of destroying golf courses. Promises of new clubhouse, driving range, academy course etc sound all too familiar, although Mytime are already backing out of several of their commitments. Sadly, the people in power have no interest in the golf course - short-sighted, narrow-minded, bureaucratic plonkers. Give a cheer to Maidstone Borough Council and Mytime Active for their shining example of greed and incompetence!

    I would think it goes something like this....
    “They” ultimately want the course gone and redeveloped. However to get the change of use on the land is difficult because it’s (was) a thriving and viable business. So they put in to redevelop some areas ( amenity based still) such the academy and driving range which allows the tipping right to be granted. The key to everything’s to keep it officially open but run it into the ground. Once it become unviable it will close, change of use will be granted and houses or similar will go in.

    Whilst it is really sad for those that used to enjoy this course I've just checked the membership prices and 7 day membership is £230 per year which doesn't really strike me as a sustainable business model. I also assume that it is a council run course which means that for membership to be that cheap it is subsidised by the taxpayer so this is not just a clear case of a golf club being mismanaged. I'm also guessing that the local council is a Labour run one and I'm guessing that the local people would not dream of voting for anyone but Labour so we again have a bigger picture than just golf club mismanagement.
    A golf course utilises a lot of land for not that many people and if it is a private business or a golf club owned by the members then all decisions would be made by a board for the good of the business or by a committee for the good of the golf club. If the business makes bad decisions like allowing the course to go into disrepair then their business will go under and a committee has an obligation to make decisions that keep the members happy so both of these forms of golf course have checks and balances to keep them afloat.
    A council run golf course is very different though. The land is owned by all of the people, not just the golfers, and if this land is being seen to generate an income that the council can use elsewhere to benefit its residents that have no care for golf then that may be a sustainable model. However, charging £230 per year for membership will clearly not generate any income at all and will likely also cost the council money. How do the other residents in the area feel about their money being spent to subsidise a golf course? Would they rather it spent on local play parks, youth centres or just get a reduction in their council tax?
    We also have the issue of golf being far less popular (until 2020 as golf has seen a spike this year) than in 2011 on every metric that you want to look at. So you could argue that in 2011 when golf was popular the plans for expansion were a decent business decision but by 2013/14 the numbers would have looked awful because less people were playing golf. Again, given this is tax payer money being spent, would the residents in that area want their money spent in an industry that is seeing less participation or maybe spending it on a cycle park would be a better decision because cycling numbers were going up when golfing participants were going down.
    Given the choice, surely every golfer in the UK would want their club to be subsidised by the taxpayer, especially if you could get membership for less than £20 per month (I can't even get a round of golf for £20 near me!?!). But can you honestly tell me that this would be a good use of government money and if not then why do the members of this particular golf club warrant such privilege?

    Very fond memories of the Beac! It was a fine course and supplied the locality with an endless quantity of Black and White garden canes and bunker rakes. Most locals couldn't care less about the pleasures of the "privileged" and what now remains is Beacon Beirut : the ravaged battlefield of a lost class warfare. The feral locals made the premises uninsurable, and isolated golfers unsafe. The Driving Range was arson attacked and re-built, but it could never survive financially. Vandals come in all shapes, sizes and tax brackets and the real world has seen the people who talk about rights shirk their responsibilities. We are all responsible for this shame through our actions, inactions and apathy. But - true to form it is far easier for us to blame others - the corrupt and the criminal - than for us to confess that WE allowed this to happen on our watch. WE sat there and tended to our own selfish priorities and this mess is now our legacy and our shame... A local saying is "You make your own Midden". And where there's muck there's Brass.

    Hi Liam, My old golf club, Ifield Golf Club, was founded in 1927 and was owned by a limited company, which was originally made up of local companies. The golf club leased the land from the limited company. The lease runs out in 2022 and the limited company has now sold the course to Homes England. Most of the limited company share holders are not members and are not interested in golf at all, the are mercenaries who sold out for the money involved. The club now has two years to run on its existing lease after which the club can stay on they land at an increase in rent ? Until homes England are given the go ahead to start building on the land at which point I believe the club will be given six months notice to vacate the land, with no where to go. Steve P

    I couldn't thumbs up because it is so sad. I couldn't thumbs down because it was such a good video. I am glad this is out so it can hopefully be dealt with properly. I know of a course in Southern California that got closed. the course was on a Air Force base. Great little par 3 course. when the base was closed the course remained open. After a couple of years the nearby city decided that it needed to be closed. It wasn't a drain to the city. the course was very popular. the problem was it was taking away from the city's long standing course. Now the course stands barren. No grass. It's all dirt. So sad. Completely abandoned.
