Coming back to this video after finally playing it myself. Part of everyone's problem was not knowing that he HAS TO SEE YOU pointing toward the direction you are wanting. I quickly figured this out while playing and it's a shame many didn't learn this

man I had a complete different experience. this game worked so well for me, trico always listened to what I told it to do and I actually bonded with this virtual ai bird dog thing. the ending had me tearing up and shit.

No he doesn’t, I pet him all the time and he sucked when I played acted exactly how he did with dunkey. It took his stupid AI four tries to catch me on the falling part.

Dunkey obviously exaggerated his experiences with the AI, but yeah it's weird that so many reviewers are saying the AI doesn't work. I played the entire game and never had any huge issues with it. Worst case scenario, Trico might have taken like 20 seconds to figure out what to do. It makes me wonder if Trico's responsiveness depends on how you treat him, because I would always pet him after he obeyed my commands or helped me.
Me too. After everything he did right, I would pet him and try to find all the barrels for him to eat. So I guess it has something to do with him listening to the point where later in the game he would respond very quickly to the commands.
Jonathan Guzman its supposed to be like raising a dog. It takes patience, and it also proves it isn't just q robot or an AI, its supposed to be cared for as a companion or pet.
Reviewers are retarded and do shit like riding and giving out orders from his head most of the time, and that supposedly really confuses AI, also many people don't get the mechanics and the experience of interacting and teaching shit to a living animal. Also, everyone calls Trico a dog, like what?

I'm on the fence whether it's terrible or good. It's possibly the least responsive game ever created, but it's also really unique and has some incredible moments. The visuals are amazing but the PS4 can barely run it. I think people who have the patience for it, who are fans of Team Ico's other stuff will love it. On the other hand, large segments of the game are built on these really unreliable mechanics or mechanics that are just flat out boring.
It's a 10/10 game in my opinion. The dogggo doesn't listen to at the starting 2.5 or 3 hrs but after that it gets better and the bond u make with this dog is something I have never felt before in any game
The game has some moment but it's not as frustrating as dunkey made it seem. Once you finish the game you will mesmerized by the journey you just took the bond with the beast is very real it's something I wish everyone would play.
I mean, he briefly mentioned it in his Best Games video, though that was probably a joke as well. As far as I'm concerned, I bought the game for my girlfriend and plan on playing it myself. I've probably played games with worser controls.

I had this exact experience, i got to a part where i required him to put his front paws up somewhere so i could climb onto a ledge, and he just refused to do it, im talking 40 mins plus of trying. which broke me into googling a youtube walkthrough to see if what im missing something, and nope, i was doing the right thing, he just wouldnt do it. upon googling, many got stuck in the same place as me and there were suggestions like reset, reload, try a new save, all this stuff, i ended up giving up and so ive never played it since (and i got it on launch)

Wiss Miss Yeah, Dunky confused the AI by spamming commands, but let's not talk about the slow, horrible fighting where you don't have to do anything, and the few times you do, Trico kills it for you. Story was okay, but gameplay was meh, puzzles were garbage that if you took to long to do, the game deemed you as too stupid and showed you the answer. Good story game, ruined by incompotence. It's not bad, but it sure as hell isn't good. It's mediocre, at best.
Waly Waly Yep. On an interview, the creators said that there's a care meter that will determine if Trico will listen to you. But, they make the ingenious idea to hide it from the player and make it that the AI will follow orders at random times just to confuse you even more.
Ya I didn’t have any problems with it. I don’t think a visible care meter is needed. It should be pretty natural that you wanna take care of it, that’s the whole point of the game. I don’t see how anybody who bought this game and played it first time would have any trouble taking care of Trico unless they really didn’t like dogs or birds. But that’s just my experience, which was a pretty good one.
UncomfortablyClose The only problem is that Trico, on a low care meter, keeps following orders at random which: A) Makes people think that the care meter doesn't exist and that's it's the AI fault. And B) Kind of kill off the pet care aspect of this game since the following and disobeying the order happens at random. I'd say most people who play and then quit the game could have a better experience if only they had make Trico to not execute the orders rather than doing it at random.

This video pretty much sums up my experience. It was unbelievably frustrating to play. Not because the game was difficult, but because the controls are so weird, the camera is pretty poor and the game is so derpy and almost never does what I actually want it to. Although the art style is really good, and the game looks beautiful. It has some of the best animations I've seen in a game, but it was such a pain to play. And this is coming from someone who loves Shadow of The Colossus. I just think they should have spent more time working on the mechanics and less on the visuals, but that's just my opinion.

I just wanna say... I just finished the game, and God damn... I'm so disappointed I waited 7 years for that. The platforming controls are totally broken, trico's commands controls are totally broken too... It just feels so frustrating. Having amazing art, animation, and lore doesn't make a game. Having a really, really cute companion doesn't make a game. What makes a game is the gameplay. The last guardian isn't even close to SotC in terms of either gameplay or art. Now I just have to erase it from my memory.

Tanked Thomas Tanked Thomas The AI doesn't suck though. It's actually made really well. Feed him, pet him, clean him, and take any spears out of him, and he'll be more obedient. Do none of those things and he'll ignore you more often. Trico isn't broken. Spamming his commands breaks him. His AI revolves entirely around how you, as the player treats and interacts with him. It's almost as if he was designed that way.

I'll let you know that my favorite games of all times are Journey, Ico, the first Thief and the first Zeldas. Whenever I play a game like this (ABZÜ, Journey, The Last Guardian) it’s always an amazing experience, better than seeing any movie. Whenever Dunkey plays games like this it’s a completely broken fucking mess.
I do want to say something here. I thought the video was pretty funny, but looking at the comments, there seems to be a lot of misconceptions about this game. This game is not very streamer/tuber friendly. What I mean by that is that you really have to take your time with it, which most people who make videos like this or stream don't want to do because it gets boring easily. That's completely fair, and not their fault, but simply explained, something that causes a lot of problems with Trico's AI. His animations are slow and cumbersome to give the character more of a physical weight. Because of this, the devs added a way to basically cancel animation sequences; just input a new command and he'll stop and do something else. This causes a massive problem, though, when you spam input commands, because instead of letting him play out his animations, you effectively cancel the sequence every time you enter a new command, even if you're commanding him to go in the same direction (which he'll just read as you wanting to do something else in that direction). I have a feeling they left it this way instead of trying to change it to suit all players because not only is it more realistic (pets don't speak English, most of their understanding of commands comes from tone of voice and hearing similar sounds), but because it forces the player to take the game at the pace that it's meant to be played-- slowly and carefully. Plenty of people will say it's bad game design to not account for the impatient people who want to breeze through the game in one sitting, but I think there's a stigma for game developers nowadays that if you dont let people play the game at their own pace, then it's bad. While I think this is true in some situations, I don't believe there's anything wrong with a story-driven game that wants you to get attached to it's characters to slow you down so you can appreciate the detail that went into it. I don't watch PewDiePie, but I'll admit; I've been watching his The Last Guardian play-through, because he picked up the pace very quickly, and has been more or less playing it at the pace the game was designed for. That's fine if you don't want to watch PewDiePie, I'm not going to blame you for that. But I do recommend finding a healthy mix between reviewer opinions and public opinions before you decide to trash talk a game, because user reviews and critic views rarely fall hand in hand. One more thing; there are basic problems like occasional camera control problems and sometimes where it legitimately just feels like Trico is not listening to you. The game has been in development hell for a LONG time. If you go into this game thinking it's going to be 100% perfectly ironed out, then I don't really know what to tell you. But if you care more about mechanics and finishing a game, and you're not really interested in investing time in a story and characters (through glitches and all), this is definitely not a game for you.

@@JakobatHeart It's not bad design, people just play it wrong. The controls can be wonky, but Trico's AI is completely fine. It works perfectly if you play the game like you're meant to. Care for Trico, make sure he can SEE you for what you're directing him to, and don't spam the commands cuz it continuously resets him to stop and look at you again for your "new" instruction instead of doing the thing. (AKA LET him do it before deciding if he understood you.) All common sense things and they work with the game's narrative of learning how to bond/communicate with Trico and he with you.

Interesting how Trico behaved different for different players including me. Trico jumped the first time I gave the command.
Dunkey obviously exaggerated his experiences with the AI, but yeah it's weird that so many reviewers are saying the AI doesn't work. I played the entire game and never had any huge issues with it. Worst case scenario, Trico might have taken like 20 seconds to figure out what to do.
It makes me wonder if Trico's responsiveness depends on how you treat him, because I would always pet him after he obeyed my commands or helped me.
Me too. After everything he did right, I would pet him and try to find all the barrels for him to eat. So I guess it has something to do with him listening to the point where later in the game he would respond very quickly to the commands.

I'm on the fence whether it's terrible or good. It's possibly the least responsive game ever created, but it's also really unique and has some incredible moments. The visuals are amazing but the PS4 can barely run it. I think people who have the patience for it, who are fans of Team Ico's other stuff will love it. On the other hand, large segments of the game are built on these really unreliable mechanics or mechanics that are just flat out boring.

I had this exact experience, i got to a part where i required him to put his front paws up somewhere so i could climb onto a ledge, and he just refused to do it, im talking 40 mins plus of trying. which broke me into googling a youtube walkthrough to see if what im missing something, and nope, i was doing the right thing, he just wouldnt do it. upon googling, many got stuck in the same place as me and there were suggestions like reset, reload, try a new save, all this stuff, i ended up giving up and so ive never played it since (and i got it on launch)

Wiss Miss Yeah, Dunky confused the AI by spamming commands, but let's not talk about the slow, horrible fighting where you don't have to do anything, and the few times you do, Trico kills it for you. Story was okay, but gameplay was meh, puzzles were garbage that if you took to long to do, the game deemed you as too stupid and showed you the answer. Good story game, ruined by incompotence. It's not bad, but it sure as hell isn't good. It's mediocre, at best.

Yep. On an interview, the creators said that there's a care meter that will determine if Trico will listen to you. But, they make the ingenious idea to hide it from the player and make it that the AI will follow orders at random times just to confuse you even more.
Ya I didn’t have any problems with it. I don’t think a visible care meter is needed. It should be pretty natural that you wanna take care of it, that’s the whole point of the game. I don’t see how anybody who bought this game and played it first time would have any trouble taking care of Trico unless they really didn’t like dogs or birds. But that’s just my experience, which was a pretty good one.

The only problem is that Trico, on a low care meter, keeps following orders at random which:
A) Makes people think that the care meter doesn't exist and that's it's the AI fault.
And
B) Kind of kill off the pet care aspect of this game since the following and disobeying the order happens at random.
I'd say most people who play and then quit the game could have a better experience if only they had make Trico to not execute the orders rather than doing it at random.

This video pretty much sums up my experience. It was unbelievably frustrating to play. Not because the game was difficult, but because the controls are so weird, the camera is pretty poor and the game is so derpy and almost never does what I actually want it to. Although the art style is really good, and the game looks beautiful. It has some of the best animations I've seen in a game, but it was such a pain to play. And this is coming from someone who loves Shadow of The Colossus. I just think they should have spent more time working on the mechanics and less on the visuals, but that's just my opinion.

The AI doesn't suck though. It's actually made really well.
Feed him, pet him, clean him, and take any spears out of him, and he'll be more obedient.
Do none of those things and he'll ignore you more often.
Trico isn't broken. Spamming his commands breaks him.
His AI revolves entirely around how you, as the player treats and interacts with him.
It's almost as if he was designed that way.

I do want to say something here. I thought the video was pretty funny, but looking at the comments, there seems to be a lot of misconceptions about this game. This game is not very streamer/tuber friendly. What I mean by that is that you really have to take your time with it, which most people who make videos like this or stream don't want to do because it gets boring easily. That's completely fair, and not their fault, but simply explained, something that causes a lot of problems with Trico's AI. His animations are slow and cumbersome to give the character more of a physical weight. Because of this, the devs added a way to basically cancel animation sequences; just input a new command and he'll stop and do something else. This causes a massive problem, though, when you spam input commands, because instead of letting him play out his animations, you effectively cancel the sequence every time you enter a new command, even if you're commanding him to go in the same direction (which he'll just read as you wanting to do something else in that direction). I have a feeling they left it this way instead of trying to change it to suit all players because not only is it more realistic (pets don't speak English, most of their understanding of commands comes from tone of voice and hearing similar sounds), but because it forces the player to take the game at the pace that it's meant to be played-- slowly and carefully. Plenty of people will say it's bad game design to not account for the impatient people who want to breeze through the game in one sitting, but I think there's a stigma for game developers nowadays that if you dont let people play the game at their own pace, then it's bad. While I think this is true in some situations, I don't believe there's anything wrong with a story-driven game that wants you to get attached to it's characters to slow you down so you can appreciate the detail that went into it.
I don't watch PewDiePie, but I'll admit; I've been watching his The Last Guardian play-through, because he picked up the pace very quickly, and has been more or less playing it at the pace the game was designed for. That's fine if you don't want to watch PewDiePie, I'm not going to blame you for that. But I do recommend finding a healthy mix between reviewer opinions and public opinions before you decide to trash talk a game, because user reviews and critic views rarely fall hand in hand.
One more thing; there are basic problems like occasional camera control problems and sometimes where it legitimately just feels like Trico is not listening to you. The game has been in development hell for a LONG time. If you go into this game thinking it's going to be 100% perfectly ironed out, then I don't really know what to tell you. But if you care more about mechanics and finishing a game, and you're not really interested in investing time in a story and characters (through glitches and all), this is definitely not a game for you.

@@JakobatHeart It's not bad design, people just play it wrong. The controls can be wonky, but Trico's AI is completely fine. It works perfectly if you play the game like you're meant to. Care for Trico, make sure he can SEE you for what you're directing him to, and don't spam the commands cuz it continuously resets him to stop and look at you again for your "new" instruction instead of doing the thing. (AKA LET him do it before deciding if he understood you.) All common sense things and they work with the game's narrative of learning how to bond/communicate with Trico and he with you.
